Making a joke in a serious situation
#1
[color="#cc8899"]I do it. Constantly. I almost have to, it keeps me from cracking. I have the personal belief that the day you find a situation that you can't joke about is the day you are defeated by life, and I refuse to be beaten.

However, I don't make jokes about things that happen to other people, because it isn't for me to determine whether or not they have been beaten by life. If they make a joke, I will. If they don't, I won't - I'm not enough of an ass to think it's ok to make a joke about a girl getting kidnapped and held hostage, raped, and forced to bear her captor's children. At least not until she is making jokes about it.

To note, I would make jokes when my division got in trouble in boot camp and we were being severely punished. I make jokes during hurricanes and when people almost get me killed on the road. Anything and everything is a target - nothing is sacred, excepting the trauma of other people.

My jokes aren't funny, but I do it anyway.

The only situation I think you shouldn't joke in is a funeral. Especially if it's a bad joke. That's just downright disrespectful.

Everything else is fine.

I do it all the time, about anything and everything.

If you cant tell a joke to lighten the mood in most situations then the terrorists have already won.

I would like to think there's an exception to this: when you can do something about said serious situation, or when you just should be doing something, and it demands focus - now.

I made a joke at my father's funeral.
It wasn't meant to be funny- its awkward.
But somehow it relieved alot of tension.

I was standing next to my sister (she is like 120 lbs) and she was holding my brothers (185 lbs) and fathers (230 lbs) ashes. And I said bet you'd never thought you'd be carrying dad and Tim. She smiled and cried and said that wasn't funny.
I felt the same way.
It made us feel better. Glitter
