c/c++ programmers

do you guys have any site you'd recommend for learning c/c++ for newbies? im new to c++ but im not new to programming itself as ive had a little bit of practice with java before. yeah i know there's google but google doesnt have opinions.

You live near a library? I usually recommend people to check out their libraries first, as there should be heaps of startup programming books there. As I'm not a person who has ever touched C/C++/C#-code, I don't know about the best book. But what I know, is that the best book is a physical one.

Would agree with Devil's Sunrise here. A physical book is always my favorite.

There's probably a ton of books for learning the basics. Once you're comfortable with the language, I recommend that you check out this site and Effective C++ by Scott Meyers.

The full title for the book is Ivor Horton's Beginning C++ : The Complete Language ANSI/ISO Compliant (Wrox Beginning Series) (Paperback). It got me through my uni days. I first picked up a Beginning Java from Wrox and I like it, so I continue with the series.

Once you advance, there's another book you should keep around, tho I forgot its name. I use it for references etc. Tho, nowaday, there's the Internet where you can search around.

the book you're thinking of in the case of C is probably the k&m white book. if it's c++, it's the book the creator of the language authored.

I think you mean K&R. The C++ Programming Language by Stroustrup is most definitely not for people who are just learning the language.

C++ sucks. I can teach you how to get A++ on everything.

the course im taking isnt on python though. reason i ask is that im determining if i really need to purchase the book required for the class or not. the thing with programming languages is that its very available on the internet. with js at least, w3school provides basically everything from the ground up (various math methods, string, arrays, etc). with java there are forums which people do post codes for public use. basically if i can utilize the internet to learn c++ along with help from my instructor, i wanna save a few hundred dollars from not having to buy the book(s).

Kiddo, if you're serious about learning where to program, Southperry should be one of the last places you ask.

Sure, we have one or two decent programmers, but that's about it. I know it's my job to welcome newcomers, and I implore you to stay. Just don't stay on the basis of learning to program.

Hmmm that does sound familiar. I havent touch C++ in ages. Gotta get back to it soon.

And yeah, that book isnt for beginners. It's more like an advanced hard copy references of what you want and is being written by the creator of the language C++
