College Majors?

After months of hardcore college visiting / searching, I've pretty much come down to three colleges. Virginia Tech, Columbia and Carnegie Mellon. I could have other schools down there, but I was also looking at swimming programs and such, so. :]


For me, a double major in Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry (maybe..) with a minor in Chemistry. If I take the double major route, I wouldn't need any extra classes to slap on a minor in Chemistry onto my diploma, so... :]

History (modern european) and Poli Sci, but I graduated 6 years ago.

Once I get to college, I plan to go for:

Teaching English as a foreign language. (In Asia)
or
Asian Languages.

Just because its my ticket out of the US and stuff.
Also because I love learning other languages, but utterly tired of roman letters.
Oh, and because Asian people are quite attractive too.
Currently learning Chinese and Japanese,
Highschool courses are Chinese2 and Japanese1 at the moment.

Downside is going to find a college that would offer such degrees,
and would accept Chinese3 AP. (Which I will be taking my senior year)

If that plan spirals down in to a pit of doom then I might go with Biochemistry, because I adore Biology and Chemistry oh so much.

You should be careful when in Asian countries. In some, like Japan, Hong Kong or Taiwan, being whoever you are is fine. But a lot of Asian countries are still 3rd world developing countries, if they find out you're homosexual you might be harrassed or even killed.

Singapore in particular has a weird hybrid of developed and medieval elements. If you toss eggs at a building they'll lash you publicly with a stick that is designed to be super painful and leave permanent scars. There are fines for dropping a gum wrapper.

I'ma either work as a Cardiac Surgeon or a Biochemist. I love both cause I love science.

As a cardiac surgeon you'd make a fortune, but that's one hell of a stressful job. My brother's a biologist, he lives a pretty sane existence.

Yes I'm well aware.
I know that in China it is illegal to show any acts of homosexuality (holding hands and etc...)
And that in Korea it is accepted only by few and in the big city, but it there is a small community.
(also heard horror stories where they take 'confused' kids out of school and put them in psychiatric care until they are 'cured')

Japan is my best bet though, because of the acceptance and the availability for me to teach in a school. Korea is another option, my first choice, but learning the language and getting a job seems hard hearing that they are more close knit with their education. China will be a far dream, only Chinese citizens or so thing like that are able to teach in schools and I would only be able to offer extracurricular learning.

Anyway, more majors less talking about my troubles.

Japan's pretty xenophobic though. Someone I knew went to teach in Japan, she is white, some old peach came up to her and started teaching her how to tie her shoelaces. Non-Japanese cannot "officially" be teachers, so she was held as an inferior to everyone else who worked there.

The thing I loved about being a history major was that they taught you to be a story-teller. That, and every time I see a veteran, I know how to get them to start talking about their experiences. Sometimes, it gets pretty surreal -- I once talked to a WWII Pacific theater Navy vet, was 40 minutes late to work, but it was worth it.

Yeah... I heard the moneys great and all but the job itself can kill you. And I love working under pressure. I've been reading everything about the surgery and how you can get sued and shiet, but that doesn't shake me... Anyone wanna be my first patient? =p

Student currently majoring in Computer Information Systems (pretty generic if you ask me..), probably going to go more-so onto the 'security' aspect of this all and work on hardware, software, and mostly network-security.

Med school is hell. Then you do a lot of residency for being a surgeon. Once you're done the money's great. But it's really really crazy.

Quick random question: How much money does it cost to make an MMORPG? and how many years of computer school do you need to attend to be qualified to make on?

Med School I heard is kinda easy... but my dad is trying to get his RN or something like that. and I barely understand the math thats in that peach. I'ma have to study 3x as hard now

LOL the people you get your info from must be going to sketchy schools.

And cardiac surgery I think is at least 5 years + then some of residency. In comparison, Biochemistry...you're set with a PhD.

To topic maker...NOOO to biochemistry lol. I did not like it. Good luck if you go that route...at least you'll have several over-lapping courses.
