A new Russian law could make being an emo kid illegal in the eastern European country.

Legislation is currenting being formulated in Russia to heavily regulate emo websites and ban emo and goth dress style in schools and government buildings.


The new laws are apparently being driven by fears that these "dangerous teen trends" encourage depression and suicide.

The legislation was presented last month at a hearing held by the State Durma, where critics claimed that the "negative" emo culture encourages anti-social behaviour and glorifies suicide.

Emo kids were described as teenagers who wear black, have facial piercings and black hair with fringes that "cover half the face", reports The Guardian

The weekend saw mass protests by Russian emo kids.
In Krasnoyarsk, Siberia, where laws are already being implemented, protestors in a march held signs saying "A Totalitarian State Encourages Stupidity".

Dmitry Gilevich of Russian emo band MAIO stepped in backing the protests, saying: "Expressing psychological emotions is not forbidden by law."

However, emo critics remain unconvinced.

Alexander Grishunin, an adviser to bill sponsor Yevgeny Yuryev, described a ban as necessary, stating: "This is the first step in the public discourse."
The moves in Russia follow criticism of the genre in the UK earlier this year, which saw My Chemical Romance fans protesting at the offices of British newspaper The Daily Mail

I was born with black hair, and I have side bangs that cover a good chunk of my face.. I wear black often and sometimes use black nail polish (Only because I like the color), I also have a tongue piercing. I'm not emo wtff. ):

I can see it now...spike traps in the streets of russia that deploy when a car drives over them and is playing any CD by My Chemical Romance.

Truly, emo is just depressing...ironic, no? It's something that blows my mind sometimes. Tickle Me Emo (youtube it) is a perfect example why. They radiate depressiveness and thrive on drama. Emo is out. Good for Russia.

Metal music was supposedly in the same situation several times.
So should we ban ANY music that could be implicated in suicide?
Really it is more setting the standard that counts.

But really this sort of thing isn't that uncommon amongst 2nd world countries (like Russia)
So I am not surprised.

I think you're looking at the extremist side of things that one thing causes another before that other thing even happens. Harry Potter makes you love Satan. No, not really. They don't ask Satanists why they love Satan and they say "Harry Potter!". This is more of a thinking backwards idea...what things seem reoccurring in suicides. Many of the child and teen suicides were involving those that were of the "emo" lifestyle. They aren't saying being emo makes you kill yourself. They're just saying that emo people tend to be more likely to, and therefor are trying to stop it. Honestly, as off-beat as it sounds, I can't blame them.

As much as I dislike emos and emo music, this is wrong. Even emos deserve to have freedom of expression.

Wow. Good for them, really. It's about time someone did something about it. Personally, I hate emos. There's no reason for it. There's something about self mutilation and wearing complete black that isn't that appealing. Willow's right, a 'emo' lifestyle doesn't cause you to commit suicide. 'Emo' kids are just more likely too.

And really, those pictures are some of the scariest things I've ever seen... Wow.

This'll never happen in the U.S. It's unconstitutional, the Executive branch (or whatever the hell the branch is called) wouldn't approve of it.
