While I call myself an anime fan, I haven't really watched much. That being said...
What're your suggestions? I'd prefer something that has a nice story, maybe some cute parts, with some sadness as well. Action is fine, just nothing too over the top and gory please.
I've watched...
Negima!
Clannad
FMA (And currently watching FMA:B)
.hack//sign
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
...And that's all I can think of that I've seen lately. ;_;

Skip Beat! - I love it
Bokura Ga Ita - It's a Shojo anime though. Hearbreaking parts.
Great Teacher Onizuka - I like the manga better, though. The story is epic anyway.
Love Hina - A great classic.
EDIT:
Death Note - Dramatic, but it still has its own humor.

Im kinda in the same position, in that havent watched too much.
The few i can suggest would be;
Gantz - odd story, animation can be kinda bad in some parts.
Good portion of the Adult Swim animes, just wish they would rerun some of the older ones they used to run, such as Outlaw Star and Trigun.
new one is Desert Punk, but ive only seen the first 3 episodes so its a limited perspective.
Im sure there may have been others, possibly the Get Backers, but again limited perspective.

If you haven't yet, you have to watch Mushishi.
More than a few people agree that it's the best anime of the past decade or so.
As for a few of my favorites (of course, Mushishi is one of them): - Kannagi
- Eureka Seven (though I've yet to finish it)
- Beck
- Hayate no Gotoku
- ef - a tale of memories/melodies
- Gurren Lagann
- true tears
- Code Geass

Question, is this the same Beck anime that supposed to be based around the band Beck? I think ive seen it a few times when at Best Buy but never really understood what it may be about.

It might have had its name drawn from the band's name. It's a music anime, and it's influenced by a lot of music.
Though it's definitely not based around the band.
You should watch it, though. It's probably the most epic anime I've ever watched.

Spot on, it's not the most epic I've seen... but fairly good for what I thought it was gonna be
-Most epic = Elfen Lied, jaw = dropped entire time xD-

Eh. Elfen Lied wasn't too epic for me.
My list of epic would be like this...
- Beck
- Gurren Lagann
- CLANNAD ~After Story~
- Higurashi
Note that "epic" != "good" or "awesome" for me. Kannagi, Eureka Seven, Mushishi, and La Maison en Petits Cubes are undoubtedly the best anime I've ever watched, and masterpieces in their own rights, but they're not on that list.

Not a fan of recommendation threads, but I see some of my favorites aren't getting mentions...
Boogiepop Phantom
Serial Experiments Lain
Paranoia Agent
Texhnolyze
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Ghost in the Shell
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Eureka Seven
Eve no Jikan (still airing)
Obviously there's so many other good series, but those are my absolute favorites that have had the largest effect on me.

Seen Haruhi, forgot to write that. ;_;
I am going to watch After Story, but since I'm actually playing the game, I want to get that far in the game before I start.
Read Death Note... Should probably watch it.
Like I said about anything too gory, anything too scary/adult is probably a no. I'm a 14 year old wimp. ;p
Thanks for a ton of great suggestions though. XD
EDIT: Yeah, I should probably sit down sometime today and really try to remember the other things I've seen... I mean, I remember watching Bo Bo Bo and Yu Yu Hakusho dubbed when I was younger, so it'd be interesting to watch those seriously.

Oh I look as Epic as in like... surprisingly awesome. Like I didn't know it was going to be that and I'm glad it was kinda thing xD.
Epic in your terms seems about right. Gurren Lagann is my fav. from that list.
Felix's list is pretty awesome as well, although I have not seen Eve no Jikan or Serial Experiments Lain.
-@above, then don't watch Elfen Lied-
