As some of you might have noticed by now, i've been playing world of warcraft for about a month now and I wanted to share my experience of both games. I stopped playing maple due to 4 (now 5) people in my guild getting hacked and me not wanting to lose my own gear. So I decided to try something new and stay away from maple until the hackings/hackers stopped. Well... someone in my guild got hacked on saturday, and there's still d/c hackers in FM (go figure?).
WoW is a much different game than maple for two big reasons to me. First, the learning curve. It's steep, very steep. Falling off a cliff can't describe it. Deciding how to spec your character in what role you want to play in the game, learning how to spec your char around your gear or gear yourself to your spec, learning how to get around, learning how to manage add-ons, learning different strategies for PvE and PvP for your specific class, learning which stats benefit you the most and in which way, learning which classes or mobs you are and are not effective against and how to lesson your weaknesses, LEARNING THE FAWKIN ABBREVIATIONS FOR EVERYTHING. I could go on forever seriously........ The discussion in my profile doesn't answer half the questions I have. I've already respecced my toon (that's what they call char's in WoW) twice, and I plan to respec again by about lvl 60.
Second is the community. It is MUCH more serious than maple. Typing in complete sentences and not using LOL wtp OMG? is a must if you don't want to sound like a complete idiot. I actually got a warning on a WoW forum called elitistjerks.com for asking too many questions. "You have been warned due to asking for hand holding". I was like "oh shiet? :f6:". I asked like 4 questions in 3 days. These guys in WoW don't play around. They get pissed quick if you mess up. This one guy I met actually has a program that monitors the auction house (FM in maple) for prices dropping and raising. The amount of add-ons that are available are enormous. I use about 8 of them myself. Add-ons are different programs you can use to change your interface or help you in game (for anyone that doesn't know). Also, the game is actually a bit more relaxing to me than maple. It isn't a huge grindfest and there is much much more to do. You don't level through grinding, it's actually slower. You level through questing. The quests give a very nice chunk of EXP (like 5% per quest). It's much easier and more efficient to bring people along with you and it's even faster (and more rewarding) to do quests for instances with others. High level people are extremely kind in this game. I've already been pulled through around 25 instances by a lvl 70+ person. Most of the ones I do though are set up with people my own level. The instances are huge. Maraudon is by far my favorite, and took close to 2 hours to go through with 2 lvl 70's bringing me and a guildie through.
Well, I just thought i'd share. If I remember anything else I didn't mention i'll mention it later.
Edit: I guess i'll mention gear. The best gear in this game can't be bought. You can't be godly in WoW by spending a shietload on farmed gold. WoW has something called "BoE" , "BoP", and "SB". Which is bind on equip, bind on pickup, and soulbound. Soul bound means you can't trade the item to anyone, it's stuck to you. The only way to get rid of it is to NPC it. Bind on pick-up means it becomes sould bound after picking it up, and bind on equip means it becomes soulbound once you equip it. The best gear in the game becomes soulbound to you one way or another.

This is the main reason I quit soon after starting to play. All of my friends wanted me to play it "oh so bad," but as soon as I joined and asked them to help me learn how to play, they got pissed and pretty much cut all relations with me in real life... Like what the pineapple? >_> How am I supposed to know everything from a game I JUST STARTED PLAYING? I'm glad I never paid for the game. lol People are just too ignorant in that game... Waay to geeky when it comes to doing crap in the game. Just listening to the kids talk about it in my computer programming class made me want to punch them in the face. Almost every week, at least one of them had lost their voice due to literally YELLING at people over Ventrilo due to people messing up a little tiny bit. That kind of game play is not my type for sure... Everyone makes mistakes, so you can't bash people when they do so.
I'm glad you could get into it, because I sure never could.

Sell gold to pay for your monthly bill. After your level 80, making gold is cake. I'm only lvl 53 and making gold is already easy as hell. The thing is, you're not supposed to spend gold on your gear. The best gear is earned through instances or made and can't be bought in the auction house. The things people spend/make the most gold off of is from materials used to make gear, potions, trinkets, rings and things like that. You need a LOT of materials to level up your skills.

I'm lucky that I have 5 lvl 80 friends helping me out with questions and with instances. I do most of my learning through research on thottbot, wowwiki, and elitistjerks.

ugh, not WoW. <<; My best friend irl plays this. This is all he ever mentions about whenever I'm walking with him in the hallways, holy pomegranate. I don't blab about MAPELZ STORIEZ whenever I'm in school, unless I'm extremely bored or I'm on dope or whatever, but my best friend sure loves to talk about WoW. Sure, without playing, how can I tell if I hate/love something? I can't, so I can't say much more than that, really.
It looks like an alright game, but I haven't touched a 3-D MMO since Phantasy Star Online v2. <_<; I can't really get into them, they get boring pretty fast for me.

IGN: I don't play MS
The thing I hate about WoW the most is just that people take the game way too seriously. It's one thing to be an active forum member and discuss an MMO, but it's another to have the MMO be the focus of your life.
@ClawofBeta: MS costs money too, and you can avoid that by selling things through MTS. Same deal with WoW.

The fact that everybody in wow are so serious is why I dont play it. Its unaccessable to casual gamers.
Sorry to hear that your guildies are getting hacked. Hope it gets fixed soon :[

Either:
Maple gets druid
or
WoW becomes less point and click.

WoW is indeed the best P2P game you can get your hands on. The only gripe I would have is the PvP. It's way too difficult to balance properly. You'll always have your FoTM specs or classes that will dominate the current Arena season. Personally, I didn't find the learning curve hard at all. On the other hand, it could be because I played a druid (hardest class to learn/play), and only gradually learned all the acronyms since I was playing it at a much more lax pace when I started out (like 9 months to get to 60 back in Vanilla WoW). Indeed the game becomes serious business at endgame. WoW eventually becomes part of the person's lifestyle because it becomes such serious business. The only reason I'm still not playing it now is because I still have stuff to do in Maple, which is to get at least a 15x-16x Pirate.
*I've said it to Rusty but not to others here:
-It's very possible to regularly spend hours on WoW. I've found myself easily spending up to 12 hours or more when I got serious. Also, there's always the 3-4 hours playing just for raiding (10-man/25-man dungeons for epics); it's very easy to lose track of time. At the minimum expect 1-2 hours doing daily quests for gold and/or rep for factions or doing Heroics for badges and/or rep for factions. Fact of the matter is, it's nigh impossible to get bored. Some call it World of Warcrack for a reason.

Not to mention that this practice is highly frowned upon because gold sellers hack accounts to steal gold from them to sell.

Yep, one of the bigger complaints I've been hearing about WoW is how Blizzard decided to make raiding too accessable to "casuals", and that some wish for it to be like the days of vanilla WoW, which in short-terms, was far from being casual friendly as how the game is today. So in MS terms, think of it as spending 8 hours a day playing, only you're spending that 8 hours raiding or PvPing.

The game has gotten more accessible to the casual audience too, which caused those complaints about it being too much so. The whole 8 hours raiding/PvP days are petty much over. The introduction of daily quests added to this accessibility as well. I don't remember MS being casual-friendly, though.

It's a difficult learning curve for me because I'm the kind of person who takes all games seriously. I want to know it all and know it all ASAP. I was trying to take in too much too quickly and it ended up overwhelming me with too much stuff. I didn't want to mess up my char early on.

as far as i played WoW b4 its extremely fun and entertaining to play with so much different concepts and systems far more better than maple's (e.g. fm vs auction house, godly eq being BoP/SB and accessable on instances while those who wish to accquire the item need to "roll" for it) it eventually gets boring espectually when the class balance is against you.
I played warlock (personal preference, not influenced by anyone) and any experienced players will know how easy warlocks can be killed in pvp situation and in pve situation its all about maintaining dps which sadly, warlock falls beind...
Do i personally miss the game? A little bit while im bored of ms and nothing else entertaining to play. Do i want to go back? Not really without friends and all my irl friends i play with quit as soon as expension release...
Do i still want to stay in ms? Yes as long as my friends met over the internet still plays (whom i guild with)
I guess that explains the most important factor about game (to me anyway >_>)

Diablo II got complicated enough on its own, and that was just Baal running and PvP. Can't imagine the hardships I'd have to go through to master WoW.

ROFL Rusty. You CAN'T mess up your character. It's like telling a fish to drown.
-Level up stat gains? Set amount regardless of what you have on (Every single level 80 rogue when naked of the same race will have the exact same stats)
-Bad gear? Just buy better or run dungeons for better gear.
-Screwed up talents? Just pay gold to respec. You can do it as many times as you want. The only issue is gold, which is easy to get
-Not enough gold? Farm it.
-Took the wrong enchantments or gems? Buy the right ones then.
-Missed some quests in the area? Just go back and do em later.
-Did bad in PvP BGs? No one's gonna know if you did bad.
-Don't like your looks? Go to a barbershop and change it, color and everything!
Sorry Rusty, but I chuckled when you said you don't want to mess up your character, in WoW. It's IMPOSSIBLE unless you care about the time you played it.

The only good thing about WoW is it takes 15 dollars from you a month rather than potentially hundreds per month. As for the rest of it, it's the same bull$hit as Maple, just a different game. MMORPGs are best described as unpaid full-time jobs, and just as I've known Maplers who abandoned their social lives and schooling to play Maple, so I have met WoW players who did the same.
The particulars of typing in complete sentences and using acronyms, etc. are irrelevant. You could learn more useful information by reading literature in 2 years than you could in 10 playing a so-called "literate" MMORPG. Honestly, it's not till you have a well-rounded professional and social life that you realize just how horribly useless MMORPGs are.

I'll stick with Maple. I actually feel a sense of guilt every time I consider another game over MS.
"AWWW MAN I'VE SPENT FOUR YEARS PLAYING THIS GAME, SPENT A SHI(T TON OF MONEY ON IT, AND HAVE MADE A HANDFULL OF GOOD FRANDS, AND NOW I'M GONNA GO PLAY A DIFFERENT GAME AND GO THROUGH THE SAME PROCESS ALL OVER AGAIN LOLZ"

Pretty much this.
I invested way too much time into Maple.
