Lloyd Korn shuts down MapleStory hackers.
#1
No sense in beating around the bush., most of the users here (although somewhat vaguely) know what "CEF" is, being the primary hacking website for MapleStory.

Well, say goodbye to that.

Not too long after, the entire site was shut down by their host to avoid any legal problems.

Discuss. My question is, it seems, was this really within their jurisdiction?

I waited for this a long time to happen, but sadly they went already on a free forumshoster for the meanwhile. I hope Nexon can shut that down too so it ultimatively kills cheatengine :>

Don't get me wrong, nothing is wrong with Cheat Engine (the actual tool; Not like hackers use it anyway), but the MapleStory section had to go, and it is. They said when the forums returned there would be no more of it.

Still questioning the legality of their actions. o-o;

awesome!!

Yeah, I went there earlier this morning and I was shocked to see the forums remade. I was like, "wat". I'm surprised it took Nexon this long, though. It was fairly obvious to most people that Nexon frequently browsed CEF. Also, not all hackers are shut down. I can think of at least two or three other semi-popular sites for hackers. However, CEF was the behemoth of them all.

Now what do you mean by jurisdiction?

But why are they allowed to do that...?
I've never seen a gaming company shut down a hacking website before (even though I'm sure they've wanted to).

Generally they go for the hosting company, who doesn't want trouble and will buckle to any legality complaints and require the customer to change their website.

I do kinda agree they should tackle it from ingame (block people who use hacks, not from talking about hacks) but I guess this is one way to decrease the spread of hacks even if they are made.

This should mean a pretty decent decrease in hacks for the next 2-3 minutes, while people look for "maplestory hacks" on google:f6:.

Well, what I meant was, are they REALLY allowed to?
Yeah, they can scare the pants off everybody, but would anything really hold up?

Why aren't/haven't other gaming companies attempted to do the same?

EDIT: Exhibit "A". Hack threads, which violate their Terms of Use.
Yes, MapleStory's terms. Not anybody else's.
I figured that should mean their jurisdiction lies within their game only as far as this goes.

The only way this could be legal is if the hacker forums were distributing the .WZ file extension files which might be a copyrighted file extension. But then again, I dont know.

Also, although hackers are bad, it disturbs me to see a forum go down because it involves hacker discussion about maplestory. From what I know, not all hacking is bad (think WC3 Mods or .gba edits). It seems like the Nexon really is the new Nazi party.

Owned. Really hard.

Seriously, they wanted to "Defeat NEXON one byte at a time", but looks like NEXON won. So funny.

Nexon always win. they have laws on their sides, and no one can mess with this.

Haha, I r j/k.

But if they had a host outside of the U.S. it wouldn't have mattered. DMCA only applies to the U.S.

I suppose they're tired of hearing "Nexon sucks". Every gaming company would be annoyed that there are those who hack their game but I'd think that unsatisfied customers would be a higher priority. I suppose even for Nexon, this is something they take into consideration.

Yeah. And I'm really glad CEF got owned. They're doing the right thing, this is the only way to kill hackers: shutting down hacking forums. Once all the hacking forums will be down, nobody will be able to hack anymore. I mean, only pro hackers will be able to.
