[GMS] The Maple Mentor Program
#81
I understand that people who tend to apply would tend to understand their own servers better, but if you think about it, if you're a volunteer GM and have a "list-o-hackers" from your own server, why not just give it to the volunteer GM in your home server. That avoids direct contact with your own server, no lashback from the community, and if there were bias with the person you advised, you'd have to go through 2 levels of scrutiny (the home server volunteer gm, and the real gm).

The only downside to this is the levels of communication with other volunteer GM's from different servers, and as to whether or not you're free to reveal you're a volunteer GM.

Let's say you're a Guide of your own server and from how things are being done, people knows you're a Guide. You know you're not going to abuse your (limited) powers. But one day, you just so happen to catch your most hated nemesis in the act of sending monsters flying across the screen. You report it and he got banned.

Then you found his buddies, whom you didn't really like, sending more monsters flying across more screens, and got them all banned. He and his buddies knows the Guide of that server is you and thinks you're out to get them, and spread malicious rumours that you're a biased SOB.

Yeah, you and (depending on how good they are with things) the GMs know that's not true, but the public don't. Fact is that you disliked the dude, you're the Guide of the server, and he and his buddies got banned because you reported them. Regardless of the percentage of the public believing the story, as long as it's out there and people has the littlest doubts about the Guide program, the damage is done.

If Nexon had thought about this, I do think it can be part of why it's better to keep the Guides off their own server. Not that the same won't happen if you're a Guide in another server, but you're a lot less likely to have a hated nemesis in another server that you're not majoring in.

i wont be applying for a guide account because i dont really care about hackers in other servers. i care about the hackers in my server. i hope other people are more idealistic than i, or at least more concerned about the game as a whole. but considering how poor nexon has done for the last 5 years, i dont think i care about their reputation.

whether or not certain situations arise that look bad, i would much rather have the fuckers who mine ilbis at ws in MY server banned than the ones who do it in the other servers. so im the wrong person for the job, too bad for nexon.

I think it's safe to say that if the guide can fly/hide/teleport, they'll also have the ability to not be tracked while in hiding/in general (i believe it's just while hiding, so since they should be hiding most of the time anyway...) so that whole thing won't play out if the guide isn't retarded.

I do have a more idealistic view about the game as a whole. Everyone who wants to patrol their own server is only out to help themselves (or their friends). This is exactly why they wont get picked for the job. If i patrol someone else's server and make it a better place to play, i expect a guide in my server will do the same. Knowing names is meaningless. These hackers all hack in the same spots in all servers. It is quite easy to patrol boss maps / farming maps / towns / and the FM. And hey, i'll get to learn a little more about a world i've never been to!

*shrug* I just felt that it's a possibility. I have seen people believe things based on little more than linking a few names and events and pure speculation. If I were in that situation, and I know my most hated nemesis is a Guide in our server (names are announced and all, right?) and me and my buddies just so happen to get banned after that person became a Guide, I can say that the person was a biased little pomegranate and believe it or not, in MSEA forums some people may just believe me enough to speculate about it.

Of course, there will be some saying I deserve it and where's the proof stuff like that, but it will still cast some shadows on people's minds, won't it?

I'd prefer to clean up my server, I don't really have any nemesis. Hell, I barely have buddies in my server. : |

And if rumors start happening, I don't give a damn. Rumors are rumors, don't care if people start hating me for doing something good. Happens to people all the time.

For those who have not noticed yet....

Maple Mentor = Forum helper who answers noob questions

Maple Guide = Volunteer "GM"

Guides have not been chosen yet, hence the vigorous application process

arent there like 1238290 maps in maple? i know there will be lots of "mentors"(is this a harry potter knockoff?) but it would still be hard to find hackers.
i think other than giving the mentor players fly, tele and hide, why not give them the power to see whose online in the ch and map?

I tried /finding a GM during an event, while he was standing in front of me. It didn't work.

I wonder how much work the application process is. I'm sort of wondering if I should apply. With my strange timezone (NZ, and I read the thing that said which countries GMS is for, and Oceania is on the list), it's evening for me when all the hackers come out to play. Plus it could be interesting.

My only concern is that I think that I will be pretty busy with school work for the next 6 weeks...

Amazes me the amount of people with the selfish attitude "I only want to help my own server"

More feedback on the forums:

More from Tiara~

What degree of contact will these volunteers actually have with real GMs? This information is really only for program participants and will not be made available outside the program. This is to prevent players from trying to use/abuse guides to get to the GMs. They will have contact with us, but as to how much and how… that is not for public knowledge. Sorry!
Can these volunteers have automatic access to Tespia during test periods? This has not been considered as an option, but I appreciate the suggestion. I will definitely consider it, but at this time I can’t state one way or the other whether this will ever be part of the program.
Will the volunteers have a cross-worlds mean of communicating with each other? We are investigating several ideas about how to ensure that the guides can communicate with each other and GMs. This is definitely a priority, but when it is determined… it might also be information for program participants only.
For those of you who are already submitting tickets and/or posting your application… IT’S NOT TIME YET! When the application process is open, you will know. Until then, you have to wait. Please do not post or submit tickets. We are glad you are excited with us, but please be patient!
For those of you who are giving specific suggestions on how the program should work… Just know that much of what you are suggesting is already thought of, or we actually are already planning on doing. What I want you all to understand is that all the specifics of how the program will work is not going to be laid out here. Most of what we have in mind is specific to the participants of the program. However, where your suggestions have a voiced or unvoiced concern that is what I want to address… so please don’t think you’re being ignored if your suggestions are not responded to.
Will guides be able to communicate openly with other players or their friends? Guides will communicate with the players, however because the guide account will not and should not be tied to their play account in any way this means that as a guide you are THAT GUIDE, and as your play character you are that character. People should never know that Guide Soandso is the same as UberplayerX. Again, this is to prevent abuse of the guides as well as prevent possible temptation of the guides when communicating with someone they know personally.
Is there anything in place to keep watch of “sneaky” maplers? This has definitely been thought of. When I say the application process is going to be rigorous I don’t just mean for the players!!! We, as GMs are going to be super busy investigating each and every account for any speck of abuse. If there is one thing I could say over and over… this will not be an easy program to get into. This program needs to be this way so that the players understand that those who did get in, must be trustworthy and an upstanding Maple Citizen.

I would just like to point out this statement by zenkat:

Hackers hack in the same spots regardless of what server they're in.

Two words… Tru Dat!

The names so far have been great! Keep them coming. Hopefully I can start calling them something other than guides soon… I think we all agree it needs to change.

Sincerely,

Lead GM Tiara

I'll give you GM powers when I get selected for this mumbo jumbo. Goggleemoticon

This is now a challenge and I want to get in. The problem is that I won't be able to tell anyone. : (

Although I absolutely agree with some of the posters that the mentor program doesn't live up to its hype, due to the fact that maplers can't police their own servers, I do hope that this program helps out in at least bringing hackers back into the underground again, instead of when they were out in the open and practically running the servers.

Hey Broa volunteers, come volunteer at Mardia. We have someone here you guys know and love very well.Heart

Looks interesting. I'll try to apply with my old BM if the application process isn't too bad and volunteer on Windia or something.

I really wouldn't mind cutting into my play time for a bit to pineapple up some random hackers on a different server. It'd feel pretty rewarding after they've screwed with legit players for so long.

Hmm, well they seem to have already answered all the questions I asked earlier, so I suppose I'll apply at some point as well. Maybe take out the FM Advertisers and AFK hackers during the graveyard shift of NEXON time once or twice a week.
