Ji's Open Canvas Thread

mm, thank you heh. the hair up was actually just an afterthought.. but glad you liked it!
note to self: add nose

genki doesn't usually have hair up, the metrosexual hair she usually uses isn't really a favourite of mine.

apart from that i'm wondering how to make the style more genki like. i think the main difference is that genki uses caricatured proportions and makes it more anime-ish. whereas even my anime attempts seem stuck in realism. hmmmm

new thread because it's not a wip and i don't want to doublepost anyway

yay apple with paths
and.. can someone tell me, what exactly is "cell shading"?

the rest of my attempt at bridesmaid via genki style... i still haven't figured out genki yet. i am finding it very hard to be as loose and free with my brushing as she is! mmm..

*whistles* dam, that's some good hair! The rest of that picture could be a little bit darker though, especially around her (anatomically-correct) left elbow.

Cel-shading, hmm... Think of it as something colored but not gradient. Just look at the robot image, Toon Shader is the Cel Shaded one. It looks cartoony. I hope you can understand.

About your bridesmaid drawing, it looks awesome. Very innocent look in her face, I like.

Ji the bridesmaid is absolutely gorgeous! The colors in the picture are so light and airy, perfect for a wedding. Chin

Cel shading is a way of rendering 3D graphics so that they appear like hand drawn animation. It's used in a lot of video games these days (though the only example coming to mind at the moment is Auto Modellista.)

She looks amazing. Am I seeing things or does her left shoulder have a little tan line where her bra strap would normally be?

It looks more like she's wearing a see-through shawl type thing around her shoulders.

Go search Legend of Zelda: Wind waker. That's some legendary cell shading.

And I can honestly say the noses of your characters bother me. The nose itself doesn't portrude normally so it looks like the character has two holes in the middle of her face -- for no reason.

LoZWW's cell shading is so-so. I can describe it as ugly however if you get certain lighting.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn's movie clips have won great acclaim for their cell shaded videos.

ahh, thanks for all the comments!

kajiti - true! everything looks a bit washed out and more like watercolour than oils (as genki's does)

loose - thanks! she was originally going to be really young (like 8 years) but she sort of aged as she went along. hmmm cel shading. deviantart and various forum artists always seem to talk about "cell shading," maybe it's a typo!

throws - thank you Smile i keep thinking about my wedding these days heh. it's still a long way off though. my next piece is a bride. haha. (dress looks nothing like my real one though!)

dyxanije - heh ty yeah, that is one thing that annoyed me but i couldn't figure out how to change it. i have another version where it is more obvious, but just feels a bit dull for me
 Spoiler
baklava - thanks, definitely something to work on. i think having been locked into pencil-and-paper photo replicating realism sketches i've been avoiding lines and using shading instead. and then shading tends to be forgotten in a hurry (or deliberately forgotten if pencil and paper would take too long)
example: which one looks more realistic?
baklava and kajiti - thanks for the tips - will search them up! have always been curious!

looks like a doublepost anyway...oops!

another apple (this time attempted realism)

and a bride this time Smile (reference)

Never played Radiant dawn. I just played path of radiance, and the cutscenes weren't cel shaded. I searched for a video of it, though. Was nice, but it looked more like CG wrapped in photoshop effects rather truly cel shaded.

I like the simplistic cartoony-style as cell shading, which I think WW excells in.

Holy crap Ji. That's awesome, especially the leaf. Don't hide the tablet! I love looking at your work. Shine

The leaf looks completely and extremely real.

ah, thanks throws and speedbump! the leaf is actually composed of 4 layers: green, yellow green highlights, white, and black. the peach skin doesn't look quite as realistic, firstly because i have no idea how to do speculars on fuzzy peaches (does anyone know?) .. and secondly because of the, uh, dots, heh.

wow, just had a thought in my head when i woke up, and then spent the entire day just drawing a peach without a second thought.. i'm glad i didn't have class today because i would have missed it!

Wait!

You drew that or took a picture of a peach and erased everything else?

Wow, at a quick glance, I thought that was a photo.

I thought it was a photo too, and it was only because of how realistic the leaf was that I began to wonder about the peach. On that note, do you mind showing me how the peach would look without the leaf? I think it might make the peach look more realistic because you don't have a "real" leaf right there to compare it with.

All in all, very impressive.
