23 May 2010: hello everyone!! Old thread! yes Smile I am sort of back, not too sure how long it will last as I am studying again soon. quick update since last year: failed my clinic paper twice, had to drop my masters but still graduated with something else, now waiting to study again in July for web development. Got married this year to an amazing husband. Goodness, a lot of my life has changed since I was last here. what else - Still anxiety and AS but have skills to cope with it now, trying to press on and do something useful and meaningful in my life Smile

In the meantime, some painting from the last few weeks. Can't really update EVERYTHING that was in the old thread, but ah, can't be missed that much. My dA is visible from the massive watermark I put on most of my stuff. missed this forum, i see it's changed too. take care!

Wow that looks gorgeous already! I really love the texture of the hair and the fabric! Redface

For the hand, I think perhaps she can be holding something small and glowing in her hand, so you can just add some light effects in that area. Since you already have some hints of shading on some skin areas (nose, calf), maybe try adding that same amount to the arms/legs and see how the effect is? Ooooo and shading for her shoes? Shine

Overall though, beautiful work. ^^

thank you! i was thinking i could put a cromi in her left hand, but i have portrayed the light source in the hair/face dress to be from the lower left of the picture, ie if anything from her right hand... and that would mean no light source from her left hand.

good point - another question - what should the light source be? in my original drawing (which has been lost) the light source came from behind rather than below (far more difficult to draw, trust me) and it was the holy symbol animation. what about this one? heal animation? not sure how to draw that!

thanks for the thought on shading. if i improve on this i think i will definitely put shading on her right arm (left of the image). it makes sense that the cape will block some of the light from below!

not very lifelike! this is just a stylised drawing.

richard wurmbrand was a romanian pastor, first arrested in 1948, and imprisoned and tortured for a total of 14 years under communist rule. repeated torture left deep scars across his body, but in that time he did not give them a single name of any underground christian or church. of these 14 years, three were in solitary confinement, never seeing or hearing anyone but his wardens and torturers. his wife was also, separately, persecuted and tortured as a slave labourer.

when a general amnesty was declared in 1964, christians negotiated with the communist authorities for wurmbrand's release. the price for the release of the average prisoner was $1,900; for wurmbrand it was $10,000.

his story captured my thoughts last night.

any thoughts? suggestions?

oh, that priestess! Miss level 10 magic guard or something xD (If I remember correctly, her name was Rainbow or soemthing, lol)

Anyways, its nicely done and as for your question, I think not shading the rest of it makes it somewhat awkward but make sure not to overshade it.

you remember! haha yes on both counts, would never ever be able to zakum lol. agree with you there, was thinking overshading would spoil a bit. will see what looks good. thanks for having a look!

off-topic: btw love was her character. she quit a long time ago, before i adopted her account Smile which is probably why love was on your buddylist.

edit: comparison here

This might be a weird comment, but I love her legs. Her feet and shoes especially. Shine

Personally, I think that having her skin unshaded looks strange... if there are shadows on the dress, there should be shadows on her skin too. I agree with Retalion that shading it too much would make it look awkward.

I am also trying to decipher your signature. Hurt

heh. you might be interested to know i had your sketch in mind when i did the foot (the one that is labelled "when i was younger i wanted to grow up to be a hooker").

shall work on it then when i have a moment/memory!

hint: the signature begins with a stylistic J Smile

[Image: 6j3w2v.png] shaded. i didn't know what to do with the upturned part of the cape! had no model whatsoever, so it looks a bit fake. better or worse than before? more shading? less shading? lol or eternally unfinished, like everything we do Smile

 just for fun

edit: tidied the edges up a bit. have not touched the top half of the cape: deemed too much effort if no one noticed!

edit: thanks tania Smile

good details on the hair. i think the thigh needs more... shading? not sure because around that area looks kinda blank. overall the image parts complements eachother but just that thigh area is almost plain white. it stands out even more with the nearby bolded lines.

thanks very much for the comment!

kinda felt reluctant to shade left leg for some reason.. maybe because light source is very close to left leg and therefore seems like it should be well-lit? it does stand out, not sure if that was intentional!

stylised heal... not much else that is particularly mapley about it, except that it is based VERY loosely on the cleric Tinyri (Pink). had like 9 layers for this one at one point, any suggestions for best layer combination?

 and again
 and again.
and - any suggestions for the way the character/ heal looks?

edit: more fun with layers

The heal looks... flame-y.

Was that intended? The effect is, interesting, and slightly ironic.

ahah thanks!

i always envisioned the heal animation as green fire, although it wasn't deliberate. not sure why! heal's a weird one. it's not as easy to visualise as holy symbol or bless for example.

I like the last version of the image the best. It looks much softer, so... more heal-like? I dunno. Biggrin

The second one (first playing with layers spoiler) is nice too.

i enjoy playing with black and white... ok ok. time to get back to real work.
