Upcoming Changes to Nexon Legal Policies

Hi Maplers,

Several of Nexon America’s legal policies, including our Code of Conduct, Terms of Service and End User License Agreement will be updated on Monday, Dec. 14,Â*in order to keep them in line with all of the latest content and features we offer. While the existing policies will remain in place until Dec. 14, we’ve posted the new policy documents in full here in advance.


For your convenience, below is a summary of the Nexon America legal policies affected by this update:

TOS Update.

3.3 No Data Mining.

You agree that you will not (a) obtain or attempt to obtain any information from any part of the Service using any method not expressly permitted by Nexon; (b) intercept, examine or otherwise observe any proprietary communications protocol used by any part of the Service, whether through the use of a network analyzer, packet sniffer or other device; © use any third-party software to collect information from or through any part of the Service, including without limitation information about your character, any account registered to you, virtual items, other players, or other Service-related data.

It was previously implied from their Code of Conduct in the ToU and the EULA but now they've made it clear.

They still allow you to post videos/streams of Nexon property.


Other changes include: no class-action lawsuits (they can't really enforce this so sue away!), some minor inclusions of Europe/Australia specific stuff, included a note that your data may be stored in countries not within the US, you cannot use Nexon services in countries where the US has a trade embargo with, a UGC policy, an official Idea Submission Policy, an official policy on VOD/Streams for Nexon property, any disputes must be sent to Nexon informally 30 days before initiating any arbitration or court proceedings.

They can't enforce the data mining rule... if you don't play the game you don't have to agree to the terms of service - and even then, what will they do? Lol file a C&D? Data mining isn't illegal. As soon as you install the game, regardless of whether or not you registered for an account or played the game, you've accepted the EULA. The license agreement says you can't data mine.

9.6. Equitable Relief.

In regards to packet sniffing, decompiling, and disassembling, they're specifically referring to the methods used to create private servers.
In effect, they basically reverse engineered the client / server interaction, in order to create a server that the clients can successfully interact with, and route the traffic that the client thinks is going to nexon's official servers, to the private server instead.

Basically they figured out what the client's looking for, data wise, and created something that can supply that information.


It's pretty ingenious, honestly, they don't even need to modify the client data at this point in order to make the client connect properly. It thinks it's connecting to nexon, and it works.

sorry everyone, this was probably my fault. guess I kind of pissed them off with the stuff I was doing. Now it makes sense to me why they changed the HTML formatting for the rankings page a couple months ago lol.

The bit about your character and accounts registered to you sounds like it's aimed at mapler.me or w/e Tyler's social thing was (that has been shut down long ago).
