I was thinking in a more de facto sense and less de jure. Yes there is an official leader of the White Lotus and the White Lotus operates independently unless the Avatar has personal requests. I mean, it's quite clear that the White Lotus has devolved into a quasi-army for the Avatar (no matter how incompetent it may be).

Pffttt, Nickelodeon didn't even do MARKETING for this series, never mind VIRAL Marketing. Maybe it's from someone who works on the show, but I very much doubt Nickelodeon is involved.
Holy s`hit, Tenzin is competent. I never took him seriously before due to his embarrassingly horrible performances, but clearly he can be badass if he wants to be.
Tenzin's desperate effort to protect his loved ones was chilling, though Bumi ruined it a bit lol.
Though I do wonder if Zaheer is even that powerful. He may know airbending inside-out, but he's still technically a new bender. Has he actually defeated anyone significant with his own strength before?
The whole thing with Zaheer being super competent kind of annoys me to be honest. I mean we know he follows all the airbending principles and he studied air nomads and their practices and all that, but it doesn't explain why is suddenly one of the best airbenders on the show, after what, 35-40 years of being a non-bender?
It's pretty cool having an Airbending villain and all, but it doesn't make much sense. Especially when he can go toe-to-toe with Tenzin, who was trained by the only living Airbender at the time and is the only Airbending master around.
I think the only reason Zaheer is considered competent is because literally no one except the avatar and their close friends have really "fought" against air bending before. So if you're fighting some completely new style that no one has ANY widespread information on, of course it's going to be difficult to fight against. Tenzin clearly had the upper hand until Cyclops lady went all campy sniper on him.

Depends what you mean by significant i suppose. He obviously killed the earth queen, and those white lotus guards, but neither of those are significant for bending power which is what i'm sure you mean.
His accomplishments are purely due to the support/existence of his OP bending squad and nothing more.

Why has zaheer and his squad not "won" until now then? They're using some bending powers that literally the entire avatar universe has never seen before. Zaheer can travel to the spirit world, and he's clearly a master of tactics and a smooth talker. All of those reasons should be enough to consider them competent both in battle and in strategy, yet they've failed to capture the avatar in 100% of their tries, losing to the various "weaker" benders during the metal city's events, as well as strategically losing to the f'ucking earth queen of all people.
I've never thought zaheer and his men to be competent. They're badass as hell, but not very competent.

Well you have to think about the fact that he was in jail for a reason. A super secure hellish, "You can't do anything, or move outside of this 10 foot radius and you're on a giant earth pillar leaping into the sky so you can't get anywhere," jail. There has to be a reason for that. For the other three, they had prisons to secure against their bending abilities, but Zaheer had no bending abilities originally. So to require that kind of a prison, he had to been a bad ass fighter regardless.
I don't know if we really know his past all that much, but if we do feel free to correct me here: He's clearly trained to essentially be an Air Acolyte. Perhaps he was one of Aang's original Air Acolyte students. He may have learned Air Bending practices before he was a criminal, and as a result Airbending is second nature to him...except for the fact that he couldn't actually airbend. But now he can, so he already has all the training but just none of the experience. That's why he loses against Tenzin (he lost, the combustion chick saved him from a losing battle), because he might have the skill but he has very little experience, especially versus another airbender while Tenzin has both (because he trained under his father with the intent to resurrect the Air Nomads).
Just had this thought, but what if Zaheer is like Guru Laghima? I mean he always spews off all these quotes from him and follows all of his teachings. My theory is that Guru Laghima got his spirit trapped in the Fog of Lost Souls, and that with what happened due to Harmonic Convergence, his soul got transported to Zaheer. It would explain why Zaheer has such amazing technique, but idk this theory has a ton holes.
Holy pomegranate. P'Li's death was fucking brutal... her head would've exploded. They didn't seem to mind talking about death more directly in the finale episodes (compared to the death of the Earth Queen), but when Zaheer said "after we dispatch you" when Korra was chained up it did make me laugh a bit. Bolin being able to lava bend was pretty epic and Mako being able to lightning bend was also really cool, I am a little irritated that Mako seemed perfectly fine immediately after doing it though. iirc in TLA Iroh says how dangerous lightning bending is if you're not careful and don't do it properly, and it's a bit of a stretch to have Mako do it perfectly on the first attempt. Korra looked so depressed in the final scenes though which broke my heart

We've already known Mako could lightning bend though. Something along the lines of "he learned it from the triad leader whose name was like Lightning Bolt Colt" or something. He's lightning bent a few times now. And we've seen lightning benders power a machine in a factory continuously and with ease. I think it's implied that the form has been mastered over the ~80 years or whatever since we've last seen it.

Uhhh yeah, this wasn't the first time we've seen mako lightning bend. He literally does it in like the first or second episode of season 1 where he does it in his job to produce electricity for republic city.
He just hadn't done it in forever so it was extremely unexpected.

Also we didn't actually see Gazaan die, or Ming Hua for that matter. So they could end up returning, then again they were pretty much the goons of the Red Lotus compared to the other 2.

Thinking about it a little more, you're right about the cliffhanger. That whole bit where all the major villains appeared to tell korra she's not needed anymore, the air benders taking up the peace keeping duties of korra, as well as the avatar line as we knew it being eliminated, i think korra is seriously thinking she's useless now. She resurrected the air nation, what does she have left to do in this world especially being as beaten as she is?

Yeah, they name dropped her twice, and had a big close up reveal of her face with dramatic music and everything. We've never seen her before this, but the show placed a LOT of emphasis on her in the few scenes she was in. Also she has a design that sets her apart from the minor characters.
