This is what I've been thinking this entire time. Lavabending is kind of a cop out as as a special Earthbending technique, in my opinion =/
I suppose a firebender could bend pre-existing lava (though prior to this the only people who have been seen bending lava were Avatars, I think, so they might have been using firebending and earthbending simultaneously), sorta like how Aang and Katara were able to bend clouds since they were made of both air and water; there are probably quite a few bending skills that overlap the basic styles.

It could be an ability that children of both earth and fire benders could use, I mean Mako and Balin have different bendings, and Among himself said how talented Mako was, so perhaps Balin (having an equal talent) could lava bend due to his heritage?
The only thing clear so far is that it's an earthbending technique, hence why the prision in the middle of the ocean.

It does raise the potential for some pretty awesome stuff though, like Steambending, Mudbending ect. That's something i've always liked about Avatar, the fact there is 4 basic elements, but a lot of room for individuality and innovation between them. (like the Sandbending, Plantbending, Bloodbending and Lightningbending of the original series) To me lavabending is just like icebending for waterbenders, lightning is just a hotter fire, plantbending and bloodbending are like metalbending as in they bend the small parts of water inside the objects and sandbending is just earthbending with a higher difficulty and I'm pretty sure we have seen steambending(in some prison and at the antibender rally) and mudbending(katara and toph mud fight).
This whole thing is why there are fans hoping we see soundbending come from airbending since sound is just the movement of air(in most cases).

Aha
Quote:In the "Avatar Extras" shown in "Avatar: The Last Airbender", it was stated that lavabending was a combination of earthbending and firebending, and thus only an Avatar can perform it on their own.[SUP][41][/SUP] In The Legend of Korra, however, it was shown that a very skilled earthbender, like Ghazan, can manipulate lava on their own.
It's a retcon!

Replace it with ice since it's the only thing they missed if you want. Doesn't make much sense tying it to air either way.

I like Luxeraph's suggestion, I was going to suggest Fog/Cloud since I believe that I've seen that performed by Aang and Katara before.

Except Ghazan lavabending still makes no sense since he creates the lava himself rather than using extant lava. If he was using preexisting lava it would make sense; from there it's just like the basic concept behind metalbending. But no, he makes the lava himself.
Stuff like this is why LoK has been vastly inferior to ATLA.

Says who though?

I disagree. Considering the first season by itself (as it was supposed to be only 1 season; they didn't have set up for another 3 or 4 seasons), they are on par.

Season two was a disaster, or as my friend calls it, a "botched abortion." Season three has (easily) been redeeming season two, but given how lackluster season two was I don't think that's very difficult. I think my greatest complaint is how stupid and incompetent everyone in LoK is compared to ATLA.

Season 2 still had one very redeeming thing i think you might be forgetting: the story of avatar wan. I don't really think anything in season 3 has done anything to beat that, but at the same time the action scenes this season are impeccable and the villains are unlike anything we've seen in avatar. Other than that i do agree with this. And hey, at least they aren't incompetent enough to let the avatar get kidnapped in "the safest city in the world".

I don't really get all the dislike towards season 2, the storyline looked awesome to me, and that ending was pretty impressive although a bit rushed.
I am just hoping they don't leave this season in a mega cliffhanger, but we are over half of the season in and I think there are too many different villains for them to not rush the season ending.
EDIT: You guys should totally check this Korra videogame gameplay video.

The Naga riding through Republic City parts look pretty badass.

Comic-con trailer of the second half of the season. BIG spoilers in the video.

He didn't create the lava. He mixed the earth with the fire/heat that the Firebending woman provided. I didn't think it was all that out there, considering how crazy powerful all four of them are.

The biggest (and really only major) issue with Season 2, in my opinion, is the last 2-3 episodes. The whole Harmonic Conversion section of the season, combined with the Deus Ex Jinorah, and the giant spirit form battle thing was so absurd, it made no sense and wasn't explained at all. The worst part is that the ending result is barely even used in this season. They touched on spirits for half the first episode, and bring em up as convenient plot movers (like in Episode 7 and the flying bison poachers) all other times. They haven't even touched on the fact that there is no past lives of the Avatar anymore, except in the first episode. The only major thing Season 2 really did was somehow cause Airbending to be reawoken.

The problem with this picture is that Snow would be Water, it doesn't really use air honestly.
How snow is formed Wrote:Snow is formed when temperatures are low and there is moisture - in the form of tiny ice crystals - in the atmosphere. When these tiny ice crystals collide they stick together in clouds to become snowflakes. If enough ice crystals stick together, they'll become heavy enough to fall to the ground.
The only thing here that might require air is the colliding of the snow crystals, but a water bender can control water without having direct contact with it and therefore air is not required to create snow. Air + Water would create something like tsunamis, but I'm not really sure what kind of "quick element" it could become like Lightning/Metalbending.
Also this picture implies that Combustion (Wo)Man are both Fire and Airbenders, which doesn't really make sense, considering only the Avatar can multi-bend. Plus Avatars should be able to do Combustion then and from all we can tell they cannot.
I feel kind of embarassed...but it took me until the end of Episode 6, when the Quad benders were sitting at that campfire, to realize that the Waterbender woman has no arms. I don't know why I missed it all that time.
I like that we know that Toph is alive, as well as Zuko. Both were unknown before this season. I wonder if Sokka is alive but out somewhere too, I don't think they ever said that Sokka was actually dead. I'm pretty sure the only main character from TLAB that's confirmed dead is Aang (obviously). I wonder what happened to Suki, Ty Lee, and all those other characters. I really do hope that at some point they run into Toph, simply because they said that she's, "wandering the world," which would make it really easy to set up a random encounter with her.
I'm intrigued by this move to digital. I don't watch cable, so I think it's the right idea. I never thought Avatar was right on Nick in the first place, all they ever show is pre-teen "comedies/dramas," it really didn't fit in. I don't like that Nick didn't really go over their plan with anyone before they pushed it forward, but as long as it doesn't mean the death of Avatar as a series, I don't really care. I knew something was going on when they started mass spamming episodes, more than the leak would have provoked honestly.

Yeah, quite a few people say this and feel embarrassed for it.
I'm even more embarrassed because I didn't notice even then, and only realised when I read it online.

Yea I think lava bending is just moving the earth so quickly that it heats up, or creates friction. Maybe only avatars were known to be able to lava bend by mixing fire and earth but he found a new way.there's so many benders so there's bound to be many imaginative ways to do things. Also don't really care about the move to digital as long as it means we still get season4.
