So, I have a new roommate, and need some advice

Sorry but if you can't handle a cat with claws you're clearly not ready to have a cat.

No lasting trauma? It's in a cats nature to have claws, when they run, jump and move around like cats do they rely on their claws for balance and landing. When you remove their claws they lose this entirely and can no longer do what cats would normally do. Hell, declawed cats often end up becoming far more defensive since you know THEY CAN NO LONGER PROPERLY DEFEND THEMSELVES WITHOUT BITING IF THEY FEEL SCARED.

Not to mention that kneading is healthy and something the cat does to enjoy itself.

I have had cats my entire life and we have trained them properly to not scratch furnitures, and guess what the result of that is. They don't scratch our furnitures at all.

Sorry but declawing is disgusting and i'm glad it's classified as animal cruelty here.

Well, your cat really trusts you. It does of course mean you are only a trustworthy pillow, but trusted nonetheless.

But yeah, there's no escape from that. They can (and will) stay like that for hours if you let them.

Hopefully your cat will be like my cat that I had and hop onto your lap and start purring untill it drools.


Annd now I miss my cat parents have because cats are not allowed in the barracks.

[COLOR="#cc8899"]I figure if I'm getting clawed it's either an accident or I'm mishandling him somehow. He seems to put in effort to not use his claws if he's just playfully batting my hands, etc, so by extrapolation using claws = instinct/accident or something I'm doing is either scaring or hurting him. If I was that concerned about my furniture I wouldn't have adopted him. As for randomly sticking me or trying to knead my arms, etc, well, he's not doing it to hurt me and it's not like it hurts much. It's tolerable. He won't be declawed.

He is, I should mention, EXTREMELY clever. He's already figured out how to undo a twist-tie (He kept going into my fireplace to explore, so I tied the metal curtains shut with a twist-tie that he promptly undid before climbing back in. This time I've tied it with the knot on the INSIDE so he can't get it as easily. He's still close to figuring it out lol.

Right now he alternates between sleeping and attempting to pounce my legs/feet from on top of the blankets. He'll also occasionally wake me up by accident by trying to sit on/around my head...

He sleeps a lot overall, though - he jumps in the chair next to me and falls asleep when I'm reading or watching TV. Right now I've got a mat for him to scratch and he's learning not to stick his claws in the furniture. [/COLOR]
