I am pretty sure this was established long ago, specifically in the Xenon quest to help Lillin in Aran's hometown. Lillin asks you questions to test your knowledge of maple and on of them is:
"What is Aran's gender?"

None of that happened when I did the quest 2 weeks ago on a xenon mule. In fact it was the opposite. I selected A (Male)and she told me I was wrong. I talked to her again, selected C and got past her. No Aran appeared at all. There may be another similar quest for another job, but that's what happened when I did the Xenon quest. (I won't say my memory is perfect, but I am pretty sure.)
