Oh, that's neat! It's like Mushroomy Kingdom in Brawl, except they didn't ugly-fy it.
I wasn't a huge fan of the desert-theme of Mushroomy Kingdom, lol.

Either Sheik is going to be a separate character reveal, she's not being highlighted, or she's gone...I don't remember anything about her when they were showing off Zelda a while back.

Sheik wasn't announced until 7+months after zelda was announced for brawl, and was the last not initially locked veteran announced.
Nothing to worry about.

Zeldas announcement: 25th June 2007
Shieks: 16th Jan 2008

He intentionally does this to toy with us, there's no way characters that have been in Melee and Brawl both are being cut, relax. Rolleyes At this point, since Lucario and Toon Link of all people made it in I wouldn't be surprised if there's very few cuts made this time around.

Well there has been a lot of talk about Solid Snake not making his return to Smash 4

Well, I'd consider Snake the exception since he was truly a "guest" character in every regard... Sonic's return wasn't surprising given Nintendo and Sega's partnership.

We do still have more characters that are totally new and quite a few of them so dropping the biggest third party character, whose inclusion was odd in the first place imo, isn't so major. At this point i just want to know if anyone who has been in the series for a long time will be dropped.

I wouldn't even call snake the biggest 3rd party character.

Sonic was a much bigger deal, and would absolutely have been chosen for the announcement trailer if they had managed to get permission to use him at the time.

I don't know i consider(ed) snake to be pretty "out there" as a 3rd party pick, but i also consider sega to be closer friends so i guess i'm saying i'm not surprised snake was dropped because it might have been difficult to get in the first place?

It made sense to put Snake in smash back during Brawl because at least there was a MGS game for the gamecube, MGS: the twin snakes. Since that there's been a bunch of MGS games for both PS3 and Vita while not even the upcoming MGS 5 will be on the Wii U, so putting him in the new smash wouldn't make any sense this time around.

Which is exactly why we need Bayonetta.

I can dream.
