The fatal flaw with the current business model.
YummyApplePie Wrote:If you really want to make a change in the way Nexon operates, go apply for a job. Or offer your services on a freelance basis, for example.

I'd have to be reborn Korean and in a very specific Kim family for that to actually have any chance of working.
You yourself already pointed out volunteers have no power. Neither do entry level employees. Especially ones in the America branch.

You may as well offer the advice to go apply to be God if you want to make serious change, it's about as useful and realistic.

Actually I quoted your post to enhance the statement I was making, towards xparasite9.

That will surely make things better for the game.

The point I'm making is what is the point? At some point everyone has to realize that the likelihood of Nexon changing their tune is slim to none. As Eos; said, how is everyone whining about it helping anything? The new bandwagon in MapleStory isn't a new class - it's "let's bash Nexon and create tons of useless threads coming up with illogical (and sometimes logical) options on how to fix MapleStory, which will inevitably end in off-topic arguments and be closed." Maybe everyone is in the "bargaining" stage of getting over the loss of MapleStory? Maybe some of us have just accepted that the writing has been on the wall for years, and short of a miracle, things aren't going to change in the way most players want them to.

I'm not talking about praising Nexon. I don't know where you got that from my post? It's obvious to anyone with eyes and a brain that the game is pay-to-win and there are plenty of blatant money grabs going on weekly. All that being said, nostalgia isn't going to help anyone (just look at ProjectOMS) and whatever arguments people are having (it's almost November) that have been going on since Unleashed are beaten to death. Every new topic is just beating a dead horse, and in turn, contributing the the morbid attitude in this game.

My main character is a level 150 Bishop in GAZED. I have several other characters past 100 and several below. I get the whole pay-to-win thing - I understand that you can't get end-game equipment or solo bosses without dropping some serious cash. That's not cool. But, honestly, pre-BB I could barely get past level 70. I played since beta and I still had fun - I still do have fun. As I've said I've played since 2005 and have spent around $400, maybe $425, since then on casual NX spending - maybe $10 at Easter, $25 at Christmas, and some here and there when I had some money left over, all throughout my teens. I haven't purchased NX since March of 2013 and I have almost all my Empress equips, not saying that's much, but they're good enough for me. I have some great friends I go on to talk to and boss or PQ with and I've been trying out some of the classes I've never played. I'm having fun, playing casually and whenever I feel like it.

Maybe one problem, out of many, is the mentality that a lot of players have now. Everyone has to be the best. Yes, the game is more NX based than it was and it certainly can be annoying...but I don't see how it stops people from playing the game. Competitively? Perhaps to a certain degree, but MapleStory has always been a grind fest that requires tons of time to get to high levels and take advantage of high level content. I guess at least now you can spend money to get there, whereas pre-BB you pretty much had to live on the computer, share your account with several other people in several different time zones, hack - or do all three. I don't know, maybe my view is incorrect? It's just how I see it.

I feel like a lot of the people here complaining about the game really don't play it anymore. I certainly was upset reading all these posts in August, but as I started getting back into the game this fall I realized it wasn't as bad as everyone is making it out to be, certainly not to the point where the game will be ending anytime soon. I'm not trying to downplay the issues that exist, but rather to point out that there are a lot of positives in this game and if you find the right group of people, spend some time socializing instead of playing 'SoloStory' then you might be surprised. I'd take 2013 GMS over beta or pre-BB any day of the week.

Hey, you never know what might happen though. The unrest and pay2win annoyances have led to the development and continuation of private servers, despite Nexon's efforts to close them. If it weren't for players coming together to try and revive this into an actual game, none of that would have happened. Besides, the pressure of competition is good for Nexon, because now players have options that don't cost them an entire month's paycheck to succeed at.

Also, what else is there to talk about? I mean, updates are nice, and there's always something to discuss whenever either our version or KMS updates. However, those discussions are often times just as pointless, given that almost everything GMS gets is old since it's already out in another version, we can't alter it or have any real imput since our version doesn't create or modify classes, and KMS probably doesn't listen to us since we're chatting in english and we don't play their version anyway. So instead, we're left discussing what Nexon's doing wrong, seeing as how that's really the only topic left between major updates.

Sadly, if you look on sites other than Southperry, players are far less eloquent than they are here. Discussions on Southperry are intelligent and mature, but sadly sites like the official GMS forums are a mess of illiteracy, immaturity, and complaining. Although Nexon does visit Southperry, having that sort of behavior in your own backyard could explain the hesitation on their part.

Other than the fact that Eos; would not allow Southperry to turn into another Basil Market or GMS Forums, the methods many other players are using are ineffective and careless. In the back of my mind I have always felt that part of the reason why Nexon can get away with treating their customers so poorly is because the coherency of tickets and forum posts is astoundingly poor. When you have some fourteen year old kid typing in "IM speak" and cursing at you, well, I'm sure most of us wouldn't be too inclined to expedite their ticket. The crappy part is that the rest of us get a bad rap as a result, and people who actually have real issues are maybe glossed over. It's just a theory, but when you're dealing with children and teenagers on a large scale, as opposed to adults (although many adults, young and old, do play MapleStory) you can kind of justify it to a certain degree.

That being said we've all been there before, that age of course, so it's easy to blame it on immaturity. MapleStory has always had an air of immaturity, regardless of age (*cough* Sleepywood.net *cough* Adura *cough*), but I could see why looking at thousands of tickets full of screaming, hormone driven, teenagers might appear more than daunting.

Except even the clearest and most concise and logical tickets are prone to immediate closure with a copy/pasted response that keyed in on one random statement that had no real relation to the actual issue and does nothing to resolve though. Out of the 32 tickets I've opened in the past 6+ years I can count three that actually had an intelligent response and only two of those three actually had any sort of resolution.
It's not having what you want - It's wanting what you've got.

Games will always come with a portion of the population being less than desireable. And the drawback to the game being run by a profit-driven company is that those players may or may not spend money on the game, so you can't be too strict on them. Most of the moderator actions are just post edits/deletes and topic closings, with warnings and banhammers saved for the most serious of offenders. On a fan site that's actively moderated and watched over, while the rules might actually be relaxed in general, there's also no hesitation to banning stupidity because the fan site loses nothing by removing some rich spoiled brat from the forums.

Still, an important part of running a game is allowing more intelligent users weigh in so they can help improve it. And while we know Nexon sees us here in Southperry, unfortunately we're just a minority, and having an anti-pay2achieve mindset (like that mention of bossing and how you can only pay cash for RA equips, whereas actually beating Chaos RA bosses just drops 16K mesos) probably gets our opinions nullified since it goes against Nexon's business model.

I decided not to engage in this discussion after the useless bickering that occurred whenever i posted, but after reading this i had to. What savage said is exactly what i was trying to say previously, the game still has its ups and you can still have fun. This is a fan site after all, we can talk all we want but the fact remains that maplestory has lasted way longer and made more money than most online games have, that were alot more fun and rewarding to play and that's saying something. They are flaws we all know about and wish it weren't so, but it is, with a game that has been running this long it's amazing they still managed to keep it afloat, say what you want but the updates and events keep people coming back.

The game has always been bad when you really think about it, it was always grindfest and took up way to much of your time for little reward, that is not deniable. But simple things in the game is what really drives us to keep on playing and coming back, not sure why anyone would think that would change. If you really think about it all the older stuff we used to do are still there, Nexon in a sense just added NX dependant content, but we just want the newer stuff because that's how people are, we can't help ourselves. We can still play a vast majority of the game, and getting the NX gear is practically useless because the rewards you get from cubing and being able to "beat" a certain boss is just all in our head. We made a perspective of the game that isn't actually there. If you wanted to you could just throw away all your new gear and focus on the old gear/monsters/maps/etc. As Savage said i so much more prefer the maplestory now to the old one and i'm looking forward to all the new updates and content.

The only thing that is problematic is being hacked and losing what you have "worked for". Anyone who has been playing maplestory for a minute will realise this and should hopefully be smart enough not to put too much stock in what you do in the game, as you could lose it at any moment. It's your choice.

....Yeah, it's kind of like everything else where we want new things that we don't have to break bank for. The choice should never be "spend or miss out" in terms of a game, especially not at the level nexon expects. Everything in the game should be accessible while NX just shortcuts it.

Exactly. In 2005 what constituted as "playing the game," well, that was an open-ended question. Getting to level 50 or 60 and getting 1 million mesos was insane and took tons of grinding. If you would have told me I'd be playing a level 15x Bishop, with equips worth a couple billion mesos, doing 700k damage on a good day I'd laugh at you all the way to the next map. Yes, killing Mushmom is no longer a big deal, so I can see how someone could argue that high level content is now the equivalent of defeating Balrog or Crimson Balrog was in 2005-2007. But, unlike most of the high level content now there was literally no way for the majority of players to get there. So, the question becomes how different is it now? I suppose the fact that you have to spend money to get there, whereas before you just had to essentially live on the game, is the difference. I don't think either is worse than the other, but it at least emphasizes how there really have never been a "good ol' days" in MapleStory. In my opinion, most players are just looking on it more fondly because of the moment in time it represented. I'm sure once MapleStory 2 hits we'll be talking about the 'good ol' days' in 2011-2013.

Understandable, and that's what Nexon always alluded to. That line has most definitely become blurred over the past few years. Tons of my guild mates who tried cubing, myself included, during the 2x cubing event got nothing but crap results. Occult cubes were an interesting start, but there definitely needs to be more. It would be really easy to just throw all the 'random cubes' in-game and then have either 100% cubes in the cash shop or if they still want to maintain that percentage, maybe 50% or 75% as opposed to completely random. There definitely seem to be some options to keep the potential system and be able to level the playing field somewhat. It looks like we'll all just have to be patient.

All I would say to anyone reading this thread who is either new to the game or who is thinking of returning: just try it for yourself. If you enjoy it, then awesome. If not, that's cool too. But, don't take anyone's word as gospel. I thought the game sucked reading all the posts here back in August. I rejoined in the fall and I'm actually having a lot of fun. Go figure.

How many people are wanting the "2005-2007" MapleStory though? Most of the "glory days" occurred after 4th job came out.
Yeah, a lot of people complained about mage ultimates back then, but they were balanced by the fact that for archmages they cost 6800 mp at skill level 20 or 6000 mp at max level; and for bishops, 3500 mp, but significantly weaker in power.

I wouldn't call them "balanced" due to the sheer fact we had the most OP potions in the game thanks to NLC.
Also, I'm not so sure I would say the Bishop ultimate was weaker in power when the best training spots, at that time, had monsters that were weak to Holy.

Granted, the NLC potions are pretty great.

But as for bishops...Lack of Element Amplification skill. No boosts from Elemental Staves/Wands.
