The fatal flaw with the current business model.
KhainiWest Wrote:You keep talking like you understand profits at all. Maplestory made a profit for the first 4 years of its life without miracle cubes. So whatever made up argument you have about this "No that won't work because they won't make profit" is absolute horse sh`it.

It ultimately begs the question: should the cash shop have just remained a 'beauty parlor' of sorts offering accessories to customize the look of your character instead of actually gaining features and items that seriously affect gameplay. Their whole '90 day' expiration thing for clothes worked for years. Pets worked for years and didn't give a huge disadvantage other than convenience.

The answer Nexon obviously came to was that they could make more money more quickly offering benefits through lottery and high-end NX items. What they're seeing now is that it has negatively affected the game and thus their failure to look a few years down the road may have cost them everything.

Lol dude, what is your problem, why are you so negative to everything i say, is it because i'm a new member or something, like some initiation to forum where you ride my plantain to see if i'll get scared and run away?

You keep talking like you know exactly what is going to happen.......understand profits? Like really what is there to understand, why do you constantly have to be negative. Nexon was making profits that's great i never said they didn't, i didn't mention miracle cubes either. Also it was a new game, if you going to make a comment like "the first 4 years" you should know markets change, people change, situations change, people get bored businesses are constantly in flux, you expected them to keep with the same thing for the next 4 years and expect that to work? In fact nevermind i said i was going to ignore you so let me keep to my word.

Didn't they say that was what they were going to do originally? I remember seeing that somewhere.

You really have a problem with the whole "research" concept. You're not special.

Jazeon Wrote:You keep talking like you know exactly what is going to happen.......understand profits? Like really what is there to understand,

What is there really to understand? That's what I should be asking you to be honest. I sent you 3-4 quarters showing their net income and you confused it with profit and ignored the entire "losses" part.

Jazeon Wrote:why do you constantly have to be negative. Nexon was making profits that's great i never said they didn't, i didn't mention miracle cubes either.

You just said that the entire problem is finding out how these changes are going to continue to make profit, the changes were suggesting would ultimately make a profit because that's ho the game operated for 4 frekin years.

You're just making up excuses, seriously you're sitting her babbling the most general concepts as if they are genuine reasons.

1) The market that maplestory is currently in has barely changed in terms of competition in the last 10 years, let alone 4. Nexon actually has stock in almost any big name company that hosts free to play games, and have absorbed two of them iirc

2) People get bored, yet their entire business strategy is to rely on the most addicted players to continue breaking bank hoping they won't?

3) I don't even know what you were going with this. They have been doing a 4 year business strategy that is destined to fail because the dependency is not too much, but it's on the smallest group of the game. Seems pretty basic to me.

You can ignore me, I don't really care. But if you post something that is wrong, or doesnt make sense, it's not to educate you, that's impossible, it's so that others don't fall into the same inaccurate perspective.

@Moonlapse;

Wizet said it before their merge with nexon, when the first "merge" tos came out, that statement was not only omitted but directly contradicted the first patch (See pets, now that I think about it I think the pet equipment did come out a few patches later but none the less).

EDIT:Reading this thread I wonder: Why the hell did I switch back to maple from WoW? Honestly the only reason I did is so I could talk to people. The social aspect is the SOLE thing that is keeping me attached to this game.

For those reading, there is nothing wrong with what i said. I am stating what happens with micro-transaction games, which obviously affects nexon business model, which is what the thread is about. The factors stated are things to be considered when adjusting this type of business, which helps everyone in the long run. I never said they shouldn't do any of the suggestions being posted, i am posting what I think are factors to be considered with any change with this type of business model. This constant barrage with every post i make only leads to arguing and misguided attempts to prove each other wrong.

If that kanyewst person really wanted to help educate people and not mislead them he would take a second to understand the reason why i am posting and stop taking it as....w/e he's taking it as, it's just coming off as self-righteous bigotry with a hate for nexon and everything they do, that's all i'm seeing from his posts.

People tend to get angry over the internet dude, don't take it so personally.

Not taking it personally to be honest, but given the current record in this thread you have to admit it's pretty annoying when you have someone constantly shooting down your posts and basically shouting "don't listen to this guy he's an idiot" when your trying to give your point of view. If he is getting angry i'm really not sure why he is because i never attacked his opinions, i'm merely defending myself. Not sure why i have to do that on a forum like this. And he's the only one acting in such a way, i'm quite fine a simple rebuttal like what xparasite did, but his responses don't help anyone. Just breeds animosity.

PS: Let me stop here before kanye west decides to jump in with more uncalled for rage, definitely won't be posting on this thread anymore.

...You speak as if you're speaking as if I'm alluding racism or something. You stated Nexon is a business and it's your personal belief that changes would not yield the same profit margins as to exploiting the need for a specific cash shop item. You have also been subtly hinting that people who decided to buy NX should feel their purchase is in fact worthwhile. This entire perspective is off, because when any portion of the game require strength only found by purchasing cubes, is when long term investments become short term fire work booms.

You have flat out said that removing the ceiling and make everything accessible to everyone through a proportional amount of effort would "kill" the game. That's not a discussion being had, that's you making a statement with no details besides "cus business degrees".

I have every right to dislike nexon. The difference is, I focus on why I dislike them outside of personal opinions, but rather on their actions and decisions. If they do something well, I praise them for it, in fact when girasol did that whole 2x lottery thing, I put $50 towards it to show my support. She left that very same day. It's outright common sense to invest in the future, by giving the population a choice between time and money. If you have time to burn, you do things to get those small advances to grow. If you have money, spend it to get there faster, if you create a ceiling to make it a impossibility without one or the other, then you limit the potential longevity of every customer.

EDIT: I really don't know why you're trying to judge my tone, it's completely irrelevant, it's not a personal issue.

Proper debate teaches you to cherrypick your stronger points and work those, because not only sound smarter and more convincing that way, but also so you don't lose your audience or run out of time on the little things. Plus, debating a point gets you more fans than nitpicking and arguing. That's just how it goes.

I don't know that most of the profit came from gach (which was the same thing - the only way to get the best items) but it seems probable.

I used about 30 a year on pets and clothes back then and there was no real reason for me to do more than that.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but gachapon just released really quirky items for at least the first year, then they added PAC(and the like), which wasn't a "necessary" piece of equipment. I'd rather have the gacha system still in place over cubes. Stormcasters/facestompers were like 2007 in combination with ITCG, I'm not sure if you initially had to gacha for the forging pieces.

This is a forum, there is no time limit, being thorough is much more important. Not that I'm looking for fans, I post the information, your choice to read it.

30%s were (and probably still are) gach only and were the only reasonable way to get any nicely scrolled gear. I think White Scrolls were always gach-only too.

They weren't necessary in the way cubes are, but they were the only upgrades available so people paid for them.

Stormcasters and Facestompers used iTCG codes for the important pieces, so you had to pay for TCG set.

The difference really is just that now an unfunded player has a 30k range and the most funded player has 2 million. Previously they'd be maybe 4k and 15k.

The reason I doubt Nexon will ever do much to remedy the cube dilemma is that things are so far along that those who paid would feel cheated. Now that money has been brought into the equation, regardless of what the ToS says, they probably know a lot of people who did drop tons of money would be pretty pissed off (also why a game wipe would never occur). That damage difference is ridiculous. At least with iTCG, it took a bit of effort to get good equips. Now, like much of maple now, there is far less challenge. You can just drop $50 and there you go.

This thread, although interesting, is somewhat of a wake up call. It's really hard to find any positives in the game now. Sad. I wonder how long until the game finally goes down.

Hahaha!. Pardon if I laugh but this ride is a LONG term ride...
As long as people keep throwing money each time Nexon releases new jobs with new weapons you have to cube, with almost EVERY SINGLE end-game equips being untradeable unless you pay real cash. I don't see how this game's ending any time soon.

Dark Scrolls have been able to be obtained as quest rewards for years. Plus, up until certain cash items came about that allowed customers to subvert the laws of nature of the game, they were also technically "25% item destruction scrolls" for the 30% and "15% item destruction scrolls" for the 70%; so you'd have to be insane to use them more than maybe once or twice on an item.

Well the quests that gave them out were pretty difficult if I recall, that and I think it was only like 3-4 that gave out, and only 2 of those gave you a choice. None the less you're right. The problem with that comparison is that, you could still get the same stats a 30 gives or a 70 gets, with a lesser chance, they were affordable for the most part. Most equipment was considered "end game" if they had 3 30's that worked, that's not exactly impossible for those who played, especially when items that were obtainable had an actual value.

When ITCG came out, it started pushing it, but not to the point of overwhelming the average player, as stereo said.

What say you, Aurtax?

I am big on being open and being candid in my conversations, there are definitely times when that is not possible as well as a line where timing comes into play a bit too. An example of this would be when we have emergency maintenance to resolve an exploit currently being taken advantage of; it's important we don't open that information up and let the hackers know we are running investigations. This is just one example, but I wanted to try and shed light on why complete honesty isn't always the best policy. Another would be deadlines being pushed; reveiling content too soon can be a double edged sword for us. While some players may be extremely excited to hear what is coming down the pipeline we lose a lot of face if we promise something and it doesn't come to fruition.

That being said, I am constantly listening to players on multiple channels. Fansites and Official ones alike! Just because you don't see me reply doesn't always mean I haven't seen something. I also lurk at times so my name doesn't always appear in the "read" section. :0P

That's...well I do appreciate what you said in that post, but it's not exactly relevant. While transparency is a nice thing to have, what we were specifically calling for was an involvement of the community in helping to shape the game.
Like idunno, "Hey, we have this upcoming content that's going to happen sometime in the future and here's some changes and additions to the storyline. Is this all good or are there some continuity errors and lore inconsistencies?"
Of course something as big as that would probably never happen, but I do wish that at least a passive version of that could happen, because there are continuity errors and lore inconsistencies.

Personally I get the feeling that many changes are made to the game without much extensive regional market testing. I'm not sure if that could be solved with simple surveys and polls, or perhaps with organizing Socratic Seminars on things.

Aurtax Wrote:but I wanted to try and shed light on why complete honesty isn't always the best policy.

I'm not sure you are aware of this, as girasol wasn't, but a lot of players, had their whole world shell shocked because of this policy. There was a confirmed data leak and it wasn't until a year in a half until Nexon started forcing password resets, even longer for them to even acknowledge it, and it wasn't even to us, it was to a magazine. When we jumped to the chance of compensation, a word we never thought we'd hear, we got notoriously jipped, the items being timeless, some of us couldn't even wear. Then to add insult to injury they gave us dark scrolls for a *chance* to get some stats back, or blowing up the very items. This is after they released GM scrolls for an event. Then to kick us further in the balls, another data like leak happened 6 months later, where nexon compensated this newer generation for 250-500k nx. When we asked for the same treatment, we were told we received an adequate compensation, when genuinely I don't think we had a choice in the matter.

So with that said, I think any player with a brain knows that complete transparency concerning "hacking" is just shooting yourself in the foot concerning it would create a huge vulnerability. The dialogue is more about this NX policy vs in game content policy. Which leads to your later part of the post because it seems it's the head branch that isn't aware how disproportional it not only is, but just how it has become a cancer. A game cannot rely on cube variants and cash shop scrolls that periodically get added/removed every 3 months. You fall on this top 10% dependency which is so extreme and overwhelming I'd say half a dozen players a year rise up to the occasion.
