The point of SE is to push up your maxcritdmg. For classes like DK which can very easily hit >150% mincritdmg, and classes with very high %crit, and/or both, SE serves to raise the damage output by crits very significantly.
tl;dr Don't swap out SE.
Now if you're interested in the numbers and analysis, go ahead and read below. Luminous players should also read below too.
Let's take my Luminous for example. He has about 60%crit now (roughly), with 160%mincritdmg [rounded off, base = 120%, Crescent Polearm = 20%, mastery = 16% (+1passiveskill IA so mastery = lvl31), card = 4%]. Because mincritdmg cannot exceed maxcritdmg which is 150%, all my crits do 150% damage.
Suppose my range is x. My raw DPS is:
x(1 + 0.6*0.5) = 1.3x
Now consider an additional SE buff, which gives me 20% crit rate and +30%maxcritdmg. My crit damage range is now 160% ~ 180%, for an average of 170%. My new crit rate is 80%, so my new raw DPS is:
x(1 + 0.8*0.7) = 1.56x
Overall increase in DPS = 1.56/1.3 => 20%.
Whopping increase in damage, compared other skills e.g. Dark Serenity (40WA), Vipercision (15% ATT), ABless etc. With some hard work, 40WA is less important than SE if you have more than 255WA, which when fully buffed, is not difficult to obtain even for a self-funded, non-NX-using player.
Now what if you only have your mastery to aid you (so mincritdmg = 135%, avgcritdmg = 142.5%, and you start off with 80% crit rate so that the gain in DPS is minimised. From SE, you will therefore receive an increase in DPS by:
(1 + 1*(0.35 + 0.8)/2) / (1 + 0.8*0.425) => 17.5%
Starting from a lower crit rate of 50% gives you:
(1 + 0.7*(0.35 + 0.8)/2) / (1 + 0.5*0.425) => 15.7%
Which makes sense because the greater the contribution of crits to your DPS, the more impact SE has on you.
It makes sense for me to do some calculation for myself here. What if I give my Lumi my Explorer's Magical Ring (+20%mincritdmg), and throw in some crit rates... what is the theoretical maximum increase in damage SE can provide for any single class (AB excluded)?
Starting with 80% crit rate, and 180% mincritdmg floored to 150% before SE, I will thus see:
(1 + 1*0.8) / (1 + 0.8*0.5) => 28.57% increase in DPS.
Oh my god.
But since Absolute Kill is 100% crit, the actual increase in DPS during dual Equilibrium is actually just 1.8/1.5 = 20% if SE was provided.
Considering that Dual Equilibrium provides you roughly 40 seconds of Equilibrium every 140 seconds (for a full cycle of 180 seconds) and you spend 10 seconds rebuffing outside equilibrium (YES 10 SECONDS!), Absolute Kill provides 6475%/s * (40 + 0.9*11)s = 323102.5% and Reflection provides 2800%/s * (130 - 0.9*11)s = 336280%... Yes SE would make a hell lot of difference for Luminous.
I did all those rough numbers just to show how important SE is. As a Phantom, Carte Noir depends on crit rate too so it is imperative that you get as much crit as possible. I've also done these numbers just to show how important Equilibrium is to a Luminous (with a fair amount of error but the order isn't too far off). MSEA and KMS people have it way better than GMS. Even then, because Joe's numbers don't fully represent all damage sources for Lumis (at least, for GMS, and it's difficult on his side too), the DPS ranking of Luminous in GMS is deceptively low.
