Polantaris Wrote:I can't exactly agree with that considering Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was just released and is by no means qualifying as an AAA release in the states, at least in terms of sales. In Japan, sure, but they never have to localize it. I'm happy that they do, of course, but that's not the discussion here.

I was refering to high budget tittles expected to sell millions when I said AAA games. I've never played MH so I can't really tell, but for what I've watched, it must have costed a big budged to produce and maintain with the online servers and all of that. And if it still doesn't qualify as one, MH4 will for sure.

And it's not just CoD that needs to disappear, its the whole shooter genre that needs to go. It's been slowly taking over other genres or bending with them, to the point that most big games, if not all, that come out today have a combat system built around shooting. Since this is a proven to sell formula, it just takes any chance of new and innovative ways of playing to be developed. It's defintely sad. There's also the issue of how these type of games can affect violence in our society, I know taking the genre out wouldn't fix that, but I strongly support the idea that damn it would help.

I'm confident if the shooting genre disappeared, many of the issues you're worried about that make you want to kill the industry would disappear. It¡d be one great first step definitely.

Nah. Shooters are just this generations equivalent of platformers in the Genesis (MegaDrive)/SNES era, or 3d adventure/rpg/mascot games in the n64-ps1 era. Sure, there probably are a few good ones, but if you want a quick buck? poop one of these out, let idiots buy it. Fools and their money are easily parted as they say.

Only the truly standout games in the genre will make it through to the next gen, just like every other generation of gaming. After all, how many 3d adventure games are still going from the n64-dreamcast era? Mario, Sonic, Zelda, ...?

In fact, it's pretty obvious why "shooting" in all of its forms has become a big mechanic, it's an easy way to interact with "enemies" in a 3d space, the same way that "Jumping" on enemies became the go to choice for 2d platformers.

You have to consider that the game industry and the ways it develops have changed through the years though. You can't really expect the same results from the Nintendo/PS era to happen all the way up to this point. What I mean is that there's no guarantee that shooters will fade away and leave room for a new genre to take over, and if it does happen, when would it happen? fast enough as to keep us hooked to this hobby?. The next generation doesn't show sights of going to be different anyway, Killzone 4 will be out by the end of the year and there's already talk of the next Battlefield and CoD.

But I'm not just talking about shooters here, I'm talking about the bending that shooters is having with other genres. It might be the easiest and most successful way to interact with enemies in games, but because of that it is keeping othe ideas from being developped and growing to success. That's why most of PS3's library is based around games that involve shooting and why the Wii was looked down for a long time.

It's sad when I look forward to Indie titles far more than so called "AAA" titles. I can't think of many "AAA" titles I care about yet I know several Indie/low profile games I care about right now off the top of my head.

"AAA" titles should be the best, while Indie titles should be starting developers getting adjusted to how to develop games. Instead far more Indie games are amazing while "AAA" titles disappoint on a near constant basis.

Not sarcastic, just an observation.
Microsoft's been on a string of horrible news and bad press with this "always on-line" and "no used games" rumors continuously popping up. It's not looking to be mandatory after all which is fantastic for just about everyone.
