Quote:Researchers at UCLAs Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have discovered a graphene-based battery that is easy to manufacture, easily attainable, could lead to smaller devices, and the best part- it could possibly recharge your phone at a ridiculously accelerated rate.

the video might have been posted on boingboing, but that doesn't mean that it's necessarily produced by them.
the method of transmission does not matter so long as the message is the same, correct?

So long as it doesn't turn out that graphene is like asbestos (It's an actual concern at the moment). Carbon Nanotubes (Graphene molecules joined into a cylindrical shape) are apparently worrying similar in behaviour to asbestos particles.
I would also be concerned about the speed it can charge suggests an incredibly low resistance (which is actually likely: they've probably used very thin graphene sheets, which is what all the cool researchers working with graphene do), but it's likely to lose a charge far faster too.

Hi, stop wasting money making phones better and go cure or cancer or something, thanks, bye.
The best part of this brand spanking new ground breaking technology, it can be applied to phones! pineapple yeah!
I don't get why they do this.
Like Liquipel. How about you just... don't drop your phone in the toilet.

One step at a time eh? The fact alone that batteries can be charged so fast its possible big by itself, from there many things can be tested to see how practical the idea can be.

Because batteries only exist in phones.

The fact that they are seeing this new awesome technology and saying "how can we apply this to our phones" is what annoys me, it has far more practical applications than... applications.

The more obvious applications need to be pointed out for this technology to be given enough funding to be explored and developed. I agree that there are more amazing applications they could have spotlighted like the potential effects on the electric car market but still phones being limited by batteries and charge restrictions is something people have been trying to remedy for years so it's no surprise.
Plus the imagery of an iphone charging in 5 seconds is more relatable of an example than anything else.

scale it up a bit, and congratulations, you just replaced gasoline

At the rate it charges, it's gotta discharge fast too. Right now you can get 300miles out of a Tesla S with the "go long" package, which charges for five to six hours. Scale that down to a 5 second recharge and you can go about .85miles until recharge is needed. It's recommended that you replace the battery after 7 years because average people will start to notice the decline in charge held, how long will it take before having to replace this new battery? As you can see we're no where close to enlarging it and voila electricity >gas

Forget phones. Imagine recharging giant batteries/energy sources in seconds. POWERED ARMOR / LASER WEAPONS CONFIRMED! Dear god, can you imagine super charging an Electric Car with this stuff if they do further research?

well considering as how fluorescent lights have mercury in them, i highly doubt that having a small amount of an asbestos like substance in a completely sealed device is going to cause health problems
