What vector did they use to transplant the mutant gene? Retrovirus, perhaps?

It's no longer, "you can't drink", it's, "you can drink if you want, and it will no longer affect you negatively (aside from the cost)". If I'm understanding them right. Not sure what sick applies to in this, just hangover or all negatives including impaired response times and stuff.

It would be better if it just reduced the production of the enzyme instead of halting it. That way, patients wouldn't have to go cold turkey right off the bat, but would have to simply cut down on their intake. The dosage could then be increased gradually so that patients will have to consume even less alcohol, till the patients are weaned off of alcohol entirely.

well its great that science is doing all this kind of stuff, but i think mexico already created a cocktail that makes you stop drinking. Long story short, it involved my older sister who wanted to quit drinking, she was in mexico visiting family, and they made her a special cocktail using herbs and other stuff that i honestly dont know what was in it. They gave her the drink. After drinking that, anytime she drinks anything with alcohol in it, she either threw up, or got a very sick feeling in her stomach. Ever since that shes been sober since then. O.....o It still effects her to this day, and its been a few years now. But im actually going to agree with flonne, as long as you are not forced into the injection everything is all cool. Making this mandatory for a job on the other hand, i would have problems with as eos suggested. Showing up drunk to your job is not okay ever, but for a company taking away the ability to get drunk at all for 6 months is over board and infringes on human rights.

Thought it was terrible and never looked back, haha. Nowadays a bit of wine is okay, but I'm also not really into drinking. This is fascinating news, though. ![]()

True alcoholics probably shouldn't get these injections immediately otherwise there'll be some serious withdrawals. This thing should probably be treated as an assurance rather than a "cure". Alcoholics will still need to go through the entire recovery process.
Psychologically speaking though, the immediate rejection will help immensely with re-associating alcohol from a reward mechanism to a punishment. Also, beer and wine is delicious. |
