You are misunderstanding my point. Pornography is not necessarily damaging to women because it gives women a skewed view of social norms or what is acceptable, it is damaging to women because it gives men a skewed view of what they should expect from relationships or what is acceptable by society's standards. (Note: I am not saying here that only men watch porn, because it has been proven that people of both sexes watch pornography).

Your statement that "women" should be adults seems to imply that viewers of pornography are also adults. This is not always the case because whether illegally or not, adolescents do watch pornography. Much of this can have violent or aggressive scenes which can affect how they perceive women. Pornography also tends to objectify women by primarily focusing on their body parts, which also detaches a personality from those parts. It almost dehumanizes women, where they seem to be more parts than person.

Whether or not you feel that only "dumbasses" take this seriously, violent pornography does convey certain messages to the viewer and those can have harmful affects on both the viewer and on their sexual partners in the future. Adolescents and even some adults can be very impressonable and oblivious to subliminal messaging and can be harmed if they take these messages seriously.

Btw, I am not trying to advocate the removal of pornography from the internet. I am simply trying to bring awareness to the fact that the integration of pornography into our society can have harmful affects on both women and men.

I believe your "men's view of expectations of a woman" only really holds water if they're watching consistently from a young, impressionable age (like 6 or 7), before their parents have a chance to give them the low-down. I think that a man, or woman, armed with a solid core belief set aren't going to be impressionable.

Although I will concede, that porn can definitely negatively affect some young people who have garbage parents.

If we wanna get deeply philosophical, it really all goes back to the parents. Everything. But that is neither here nor there.



(opinion>)tbh though id prefer if porn was gone. i watch porn, i like it, but i've never had sex. can't help but feel the surprise has been ruined a tad? novelty may have died down a bit before i even got to it? then again that doesn't matter so much, so long as its with the person you love.(<opinion)

Oh of course! I just feel that if you think actions in pornography constitute actions in reality, you are just as close to thinking the same about Disney movies, so a ban like this won't help the audience that would be influenced by it anyways. That's just my two cents though! I'm sure there's more that I haven't read into.

If they were serious about banning pornography simply because it degrades women or damages children or anything of that sort it would be better still if they actually paid more attention to the issues that cause sexual violence in the first place as porn and sexual violence are not as directly linked as some might think and people know how to get pass the filter if they're determined enough, anyway.

thats only assuming the icelandic government assumes 100% of their male youths are stupid enough to believe that porn videos portray how a woman should be treated.

like i said, it starts with the parents. parents teach son proper way to interact with human beings, by extension how to properly interact with a potential mate, situation is one step closer to being addressed.

if i was icelandic, i dont want my government telling me what porn i cant watch. im a reasonable young man, i know how to treat women. but then again, i was not issued my free state-funded girlfriend when i turned 18, so i still need my porn because my imagination isnt what it used to be.

I don't think you understand. My statement was a joke. I was implying that this ban is so pointless and unbased, that they might as well ban Disney movies-- or even baseball bats.

Politically, they have the right, as politicians have the "right" to do anything they please if there are no laws forbidding them, but if they do it, they must also admit that they are not a part of the free world. The key point on every issue of censorship is this; if lines are allowed to be drawn on rights, those rights have already been lost; every person has a different moral compass, and the most outspoken and powerful are outliers compared to the general populace. It's easy to take rights away, but it's VERY hard for people to give those rights back. By doing that, they are admitting that they were wrong, and there's nothing a powerful person hates to do more than admit that he/she was wrong.

I would question their commitment to free speech, but I sure would not say they have to relinquish their place in the free world. That is a tad too extreme.

[MENTION=8017]CrazyForDex[/MENTION]; If they were serious about tackling the issue of women being objectified I'd recommend looking into the situation of Icelandic women currently to see if they're largely being objectified or are having difficulties landing jobs only because of bias. I however think Sapta has a good point; regardless of whether this is an effective measure they can at least say they're doing something for their people if they're banning porn since this restricts at least some people from watching it and the ban may actually be more related to the government's wish to preserve their culture than to actually make a difference in terms of equality.

Still a band-aid solution, but sometimes you shouldn't do surgeries when band-aids are enough to get your point across.

This is why I tend not to like straight porn, it's too demeaning. Is it really necessary to get violent? do you really have to be cruel? I would much rather watch 2 people have consensual, normal sex like normal people than watch a man beat and demean a woman into performing sex acts, or start calling her names throughout.

I can see where people come from when they say how disgusting porn is, not because it's people having sex; Sex acts are perfectly normal and a part of life, but because of the way it is commercialized, and the way it makes women look like sluts and the men as the ones in charge.

Some parts of the internet has gone too far with this, so I think Iceland has a good idea. the "bad" porn ruined it for everyone, in the same way that glitchers ruined the Old Victoria maps in maplestory. this is just damage control.
