If there was a large enough group purchasing cards, I'd go out and buy a booster box and sell at retail price.

That, or you and your chums could just chip in for a booster box. It makes each pack less than 3 bucks each.

This is what me and a group of, like, 8 or so people did. Communal sharing of storage and whatnot.

Gotta admit, I kinda like it. How they've incorporated a story with a card game kinda intrigues me.
Personally though, playstyle-wise, I like all but green (except when absolutely needed).

Green was better in older blocks. I havn't played too much with Return to Ravnica, but from what I understand.... a green/white set can whoop some ass if you populate and have soldier tokens. That + http://www.cardkingdom.com/catalog/item/187470

Green/White (Selesnya) is pretty good in RtR. Also if you play competitive Standard, GWx decks are probably the best in the format right now (because of Thragtusk).

If you're constrained by budget but still want to play a lot, there's a program called Cockatrice that simulates online play. It requires you to have a very good knowledge of how the rules work, though, so it's not really for beginners unless you play with friends. And if you have a group of friends you can play with in RL (like 4+) you guys can do your own draft. Draft is probably some of the most fun you can have in Magic and rewards skill and ability to choose cards, instead of rewarding whoever has the most money to buy expensive cards.

There's also a format called EDH/Commander, which is my favorite. Look into it, it's a ton of fun for multiplayer and lets you play cards that normally suck.

If you like storyline tying into the cards, it used to be a TON better in older blocks with the Weatherlight Saga and Odyssey saga. They used to have novels for each set that came out, and many of the cards/artwork/flavor text tied directly into the story. PM me if you're interested in reading about Magic lore, it's one of my favorite parts of the game.

I bought a fat pack of Shards of Alara, and it came with a 2-3 chapter sample book. I loved the storyline in that, but cannot afford to purchase the book alone (something like 30 bucks for it >>)

I used to play back when affinity was hot (and cranial plating was still "legal"). Plating + Atog + Disciple. I remember it being a very versatile deck, allowing me a good chance to win even if I lose plating. I only had major problems with land destruction decks (if they start with a good hand) and I believe the other one was green (artifact destroyers). Getting anything other than a decent hand against these decks meant total destruction for me.

I also remember building (or attempting to) and playing a tooth and nail deck. Limited funds meant limited success with this deck though.

Sadly, economic constraints meant I had to give up this hobby. Someday though, someday I shall return.

Unfortunately securing any legitimate copies of Weatherlight/Odyssey books that aren't eye-gougingly expensive has been difficult. "Newer" blocks such as Odyssey, Mirrodin, Kamigawa, Ravnica, Time Spiral books should be easier to find on Amazon/eBay but still aren't the cheapest.

The Artifacts saga was anthologied as Artifacts Cycle I and Cycle II (available @ Amazon). If you're interested in pre-revisionist MTG lore these books are basically a required reading, as they explain Urza's and Dominaria's backstory.

I do, however, have text/PDF copies of the entire Weatherlight saga and portions of Odyssey saga available. I'll send you a PM when I get home from work with a link if you're interested.

As far as the books go, I loved the Time Spiral cycle.

My school actually recently hosted a tournament, so I just got into it.

I've thought of playing again but it's just too expensive nowadays, and it drains school time.

Perfectly valid reason. But when the only thing you do all day is wake up, eat, sleep, bathe, and use the facilities... The only things you can do for fun are work out, video games, read books from the library, or extra work.

Yeah, I know. If I had the time and the money I'd play too, I've been playing old decks (2003-2004) with my best friend every now and then. It's fun but it makes me feel nostalgic, old and just wishing that it wasn't so expensive right now.
I even looked for a cheap/competitive deck and it was 150$+, asked my friend and he tells me that it isn't working in the place we play lol.
Which is the other thing that makes me doubtful of spending money. The place were my friends go, and where I learned how to play, is so poorly administrated that it will go bankrupt and close anytime soon. I give it 2 years, 5 tops. There are other places but they're small and it's just awkward for how many people play there... if that place closes I wouldn't have anywhere to play and the cards would rot in my closet.

I don't know where you've been shopping, but I've seen starter decks (60 card deck and two boosters) for $15 and boosters for like, $7 at Target.

Boosters, on average, are 4 dollars a pack (3.99). At walmart, you can pick up a pack of 3 random older boosters + 1 promo for $12.
