Miyamoto's 60th birthday, Metroid Prime's 10th, and a Metroid 25th Anniversary Remix
#1
Some of you may already be aware, but today marks a sad and happy day. Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto, the savior of the video game industry, has turned 60 today. It's a happy occasion to celebrate his birthday and all of his achievements, yet it's sad, because it makes us all realize this journey is eventually going to come to an end.

Putting that aside, let's take a moment to pay tribute to everything he has given us so far, from Mario to Zelda to Starfox to Pikmin. He knows the video game industry and he knows how to make games. He knows how to target his audience and give them countless hours of entertainment.

Here's to you, Mr. Miyamoto! Happy birthday, old man!

Tommorrow, November 17th, marks the 10th anniversary of one of the greatest games to ever happen : Metroid Prime. It was the first step for the Metroid series into the world of the third dimension. It had supreme graphics of the time. It created many elements modern day first person games are inspired by, such as the interface of Samus' actual helmet. It introduced things the Metroid series hadn't come across yet, such as the various scan modes. Never before could you look at the world and see the story and lore unfold, right before your eyes -- no! Through Samus' eyes! Retro Studios took what Super Metroid did with the series and ran with it. It is nothing short of a masterpiece.

It's hard to believe it has already been 10 years. I remember when I first got it, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I remember the very first time I played it was when I was at Target and there was one of those kiosks set up with the game demo loaded. I knew then I had to have it. A couple of weeks later, I got it for Christmas. I've been in love with it ever since.

As tribute to the 10th anniversary of Metroid Prime, I plan to sit on my ass all night and day, playing through the game and perhaps through the trilogy.

So far, the Metroid game I owned a long time ago and played the most was Metroid II: The Return of Samus. I have Metroid and Super Metroid on the Virtual Console, but that's about it.

Beaten it like three times, again on Virtual Console. I even had fun with the All equipment glitch.

Justin Wrote:If anyone hasn't played Super Metroid: DO IT.

Not probably it IS the greatest SNES game in existence.

Also,

I'm doing this for all the series and not just Metroid Prime because Super Metroid made a much biggest impression on me.

What are your favorite moments from the game?
The boss fights by far. Everytime I had beaten them I really felt like I acomplished something and the music/bosses themselve were amazing.
To be specific the moments that stood by me the most were these:

1: The wall jump creatures (Etecoons) from Super Metroid.
2: Maridia. Everything about it gave me the shivers as a kid.
3: Draygon. I literally peed myself once during his fight. And the heartpounding before I had to fight him was incredible.
4: Seeing the release of Metroid Prime 2 (The best Metroid prime game by far imo).
5: Finding out that mother brain isn't just a brain.
6: The Wrecked ship in Super Metroid. (Before the power was turned on) As a kid I did nothing but RUN RUN RUN and hope those skeletons didnt pop up.
7: Crocomire. The skeleton part? Holy crap! I remember seeing those bubbles and thinking NO NO NO HE'S STILL HERE NO. -suddenly quiet- RAWR OMFG!!

What are your least favorite moments of the game?
The backtracking and even though this was the least favorite thing to do, it was still cool because you get to see things you didn't notice before.

What is your favorite enemy of the game?
The Draygon boss as it scared me and made the biggest impression on me while playing it.
And it was funny to see it back in a glass tube in Metroid prime so I could have my revenge laugh at him.

What is your least favorite enemy of the game?
Ridley. Why? because he felt so underwhelming compared to all the other bosses that scared the living crap out of me.
The only time he made a real impression on me was once during Metroid Prime and the first you meet him in Super Metroid.

What is your favorite piece of the soundtrack from the game?
Lower norfair: (Super Metroid)
 Spoiler

Maridia (Super Metroid) This is by far my favorite out of every soundtrack in the entire series.
 Spoiler

And for Metroid prime it would be: The selection screen.

What is your favorite and least favorite area of the game?
Cant pick. Everything was to awesome.

What is your favorite piece of equipment from the game?
For Super Metroid it would be the screw attack/running boots.
For Metroid Prime it would be the Phazon Suit or the Thermal Visor.

Dude 60 isn't old anymore, and given the exponential advancement in medical technology, and the fact that he is Shigeru Miyamoto, he'll live forever. It's all good.

Answering these as well because holy pomegranate yes Metroid Prime was a defining game, both for the industry like you said, and for me personally.

What are your favorite moments from the game?

God, just most of it. Going through the plot on Wikipedia and remembering the order of events in my mind, I remember loving pretty much everything. Tallon IV was so well crafted, from its diversity of climate zones down to the extensive intricacies in each area hiding puzzles, upgrades, and power-ups, and I simply remember being in awe while playing, fully immersed in this brilliantly-realized world.

What are your least favorite moments of the game

Phazon Mines. Like people said before.

What is your favorite enemy of the game?

I had a special interest in the ice beast boss, Sheegoth, that you killed for the Wavebuster (iirc), because it was a reference point of game progression later on when you got the Plasma Beam and what was once a boss became something you could kill in a few uncharged shots.

I also have a love/hate relationship with Metroid Prime. The final boss fight will forever remain one of the most epic battles I've ever fought in video games (and, side-note, made the final boss in Corruption disappointing for its comparative lack of difficulty), though I hate it because I was never able to kill it in Hard Mode lol.

What is your least favorite enemy of the game?

FISSION METROIDS. Like above poster. The amount of times I reset running to Metroid Prime in Hard Mode so I had as close to max HP as possible are ridiculous. That massive room full of them that you have to jump to the top of on your way to MP was the bane of my existence (and probably the biggest factor in my hate relationship with the boss).

What is your favorite piece of the soundtrack from the game?

Same as others above: Phendrana Drifts. The music was incredibly calm, yet with a motivating tinge of curiosity that underscored the wonder of exploration in the area.

And the selection screen music posted above is just nostalgia at its finest.

What is your favorite and least favorite area of the game?

Phendrana Drifts just edges Tallon Overworld for me. I really love fully developed climate regions in video games.

Also like above, HATED Phazon Mines, but honestly the Impact Core was worse. Like I said, the bullshit required to get to Metroid Prime without getting caught by a Fission Metroid was just terrible.

What is your favorite piece of equipment from the game?

PLASMA BEAM. The Wavebuster was pretty wicked too.

More importantly : What do you plan to do to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Metroid Prime?

Working lol.

The one thing I didn't like about Metroid Prime was the feel of the controls, but only after playing it again after beating Corruption. The fluidity of Metroid Prime when playing with the Wiimote is unparalleled, and yes, I do know they remade Prime for the Wii with said controls, so I'd probably fall in love with that version.

I shall dedicate to this occasion (though I'm a day late) by playing the Metroid series for the first time ever.

Eventually.

You're not a day late. Today is still the 17th. Biggrin

You should definitely dive into the Metroid series. It's definitely my favorite science fiction story. Its music is amazing!

Speaking of amazing music, the Harmony of a Hunter 101% Run album is now available for download. I was listening to the radio show today and I was in the IRC, talking to the artists themselves. They're really cool people and their music is sublime. Any Metroid fan should take a listen, because this is as good as it gets for remixes. http://www.shinesparkers.net/harmonyofahunter/download/

Answering the questions I posted earlier, though :

What are your favorite moments from the game?
This is hard to say. Landing on Tallon IV for the first time, hearing the item get jingle for the first time, and facing Meta Ridley are probably my top choices.

What are your least favorite moments of the game?
Facing the Fission Metroids at the end, definitely. Those guys at the end are horrible to deal with. I always also dislike having to go up against the Omega Pirate, though I seemed to have an easy time with it when I fought him today. In addition, having to face Chozo Ghosts every other map in the Chozo Ruins was pretty obnoxious, because those guys creep me the hell out.

What is your favorite enemy of the game?
Hmmmm... Probably Meta Ridley. The fight against him is a lot of fun, I think. The music makes it even more fun.

What is your least favorite enemy of the game?
Fission Metroids and Chozo Ghosts

What is your favorite piece of the soundtrack from the game?
The data selection screen, definitely. It strikes my sci-fi nerdom hard.

What is your favorite and least favorite area of the game?
My favorite area would probably be the various maps of Tallon IV. The scenery is so beautiful. It feels fresh, it feels peaceful, and it's just perfect. My least favorite would be the Phazon Mines and the Pirate-infested parts of Phendrana. Those areas are very eerie and I always second guess myself before heading there.

What is your favorite piece of equipment from the game?
The various visors. I couldn't say one specifically, but they all have a neat use and feels so cool to see the world through Samus' eyes. Using the scans to learn about enemies, objects, lore, and other things is very intriguing. Seeing things through the heat visor to scope out enemies hanging on the ceiling is awesome. Using the X-Ray visor was a great throwback to Super Metroid and it felt a lot nicer, since you could see it from Samus' point of view, rather than a small beam in front of Samus.
