Door to door magazine scammers
#1
Today, I heard a knock at the door.
I went at got it and I saw a cheery, 6 foot tall, frail ish looking man, with dark skin.
I was slightly afraid because well, what was he doing here?
I inquired to who he was.
He said he was a 19 year old boy from an organization who takes in kids from innercity slums and keeps them away from drugs and sex and instead lets them sell magazine subscriptions.
I was home alone at the time.
However, being naive, I told him that I was interested in his organization. I didn't let him come in my house, but I asked him a few questions about it. He said they moved around all year and sold these subscriptions and recruited workers. Sounded innocent enough to me. Also, he looked like a very happy person so I relaxed a little bit.
Now I knew I couldn't buy any of these, but I knew that my mom was about to come home (she had gone for groceries) and that she could probably purchase some of his worthwhile cause.

So I told him to wait, and I chatted with him a little bit. He seemed decent, however a little bit jumpy maybe. Didn't seem to be on a schedule, and was filling out some papers.
He told me how that if he sold magazines, he'd get "points" and that went towards a scholarship. Now I thought that was dandy and said that I would definitely try to get my mom to help. He told me about all the other neighbors he had gone to and who had bought from him, and how it was a great idea.

So my mom comes home, sees a big man in the doorway with me in front, and starts screaming.
Which is the natural thing to do. I would do the same if I saw a relative of mine being so stupid.
So she comes and half yells at him to promptly leave the property. I try to explain, but he quickly leaves.
My mom starts yelling at me, but ends up crying. She was scared, just like I had originally been. This man could have been a pedofile, rapist, or murderer, and I was dumb enough to answer and even TALK to him.
But I felt really bad. I wanted him to get some money for that scholarship. She agreed that if he came back she'd purchase something, and we cooled down after the fright. She wasn't mad anymore - just scared.

Now I started to have a feeling of guilt. I shouldn't even have had it - I juts felt bad that I made him stand there waiting for nothing except a yelling mom.
So I went online and tried to recall what his organization was called. Something like freedom subscription. Google'd, nothing of interest came up.
So I typed "Magazine door to door sellers"
I get a whole slew of "WATCH OUT FOR THIS SCAM" things.
I suddenly feel like the biggest idiot. I read them, and I'm scared to death for myself.
These organizations are ex-cons who have no way to get money. These "recruiters" put ads in the paper saying "Travel abraod, and get paid!"
These ex-cons sign up, thinking for a free travel oppurtunity. They get forcefully recruited into a job that takes them around the US, doing this work, 9 hours a day. If they do not meet their quota, they don't get fed. They are abused and sexually molested a LOT of the time.
Then I continued to read that they fake everything. I read multiple stories of kids who "wanted to pay for scholarship" or "wanted to travel abroad."
I'm literally shaking in my seat. I have a strange feeling now that at any moment this weirdo scam artist could pop through my door and just kill me. It's paranoia or trauma, I'm guessing.
Finally, I read they sell these subscriptions and usually magazines never get sent to you anways - and guess what. They spend the money on drugs.
I carefully think about what I had gone through. I remembered he was a bit jumpy. Was he on drugs... right when he was talking to me?

I'm scared, guys. This realy have emotionally scarred me, seriously. I have the strangest feeling he's like, watching me now.

I'm freaked out. I'm sorry for venting at you, I'm just really scared.
Thanks for reading.

Dang, sounds pretty freaky.

When I'm at home I never answer the door. I sometimes check who it is through a window, and I'll answer it if I know them really well, but most of the time I just completely ignore it. Heck, even when I'm at my dorm I rarely answer the door. Haha Unless whoever it is calls my name or lets me know they're coming ahead of time, I'm not gonna waste time climbing down from my bunk for them.

You'll be fine, but I hope you learned your lesson. Answering the door to strangers isn't very smart.

Yeah...
Actually, the whole thing was an accident (opening the door)
My house has been under heavy renovation and there are constantly workers coming in and out
usually my mom informs me but I've gotten so used to it, I just assumed he was a worker. It was too late to slam the door on him when I found out his identity.

But yeah. I learned my lesson.

I always heard about those things and thought they just take your money.
Never would I think they'd "abused and sexually molested you a LOT of the time".

I'm glad your mother came in time and the situation didn't go further. My parents taught me never to open the door for anyone unless I heard the bell ring in a certain rhythm/song so I knew it's them. I still don't open the door for anyone unless I know you're coming or call me to open the door. I do look out the window just incase I'm expecting a package.

I've fallen for my fair share of scams that I'm not proud of. =x But if you feel like you've really been traumatized, try to get some help with that. Good to know you're ok. :]

If you live in Southern California, you get about two of those everyday.

I just hide under my chair. Excellent

I've never heard of this happening in england.

All we get are Jehova's Witnesses.

if anything like this did come knocking, i'll just say 'sorry, im not interested' and close the door.

This is the first time it ever happened to me, so that's why I acted so dumb - I was kind of paralyzed mentally for a bit.

Now I know how to react to that kind of situation.
"Sorry, not interested, come back later if you'd like"

That is really overwhelming. D;

It's okay since it's the first time it happens to you. Next time, always check subtily through a nearby window to see who it is before opening the door. That trick can be way more useful if you have a half see-through main door. If the person sees you and you walk away, he will continue to bother you until you open. Also, tell your mom to leave you messages or let you know if anyone is expected to ring the door bell. You will be aware of it.

If you accidently happen to open, just politely say that you are not interested, but thank for the offer anyways. It is pretty much of a key moment to know if the person is a good or bad one. If good, he will thank you and leave. If he's literally forcing you to listen or is holding the door from your to close it, watch out.

Holy crap, I didn't evne know this kind of thing went on x_X Well, I don't live in America, but damn, if the same thing had happened to me I probably would have bought the subscription and never even known T_T I can definitely understand your situaation.

But that's the thing about these kinds of people. They are preying on your sense of sympathy and judgement. There are GENUINE causes that will knock at your door asking for sponsorship or whatever, and you should try to keep an open mind, even if you are unsure. We get school kids doing fundraising events a lot where I live cause I'm literally around the corner from a primary school. We also have a lot of foreign people selling goods door to door. Some of them are legit, some aren't, so you really have to just use your best judgement >.< Even though it can be hard sometimes.
