What's so cool in "Homestuck"?

Can someone explain... I see there's threads etc. about it here, but when I checked it out I found it boring... It's just a flash "game"/"story", that is apparently extremely long and growing? The plot doesn't even make sense. I don't see how it's worth my time.

At the same time I'm curious about it because of the fanbase...

Arc 2 is apparently when it gets good.

Couldn't get past the backstory or part of the hippie flower girl.

and never stops

just try and get past the first few acts, it gets fucking good.

It's a webcomic, not a business proposal. You've given no indication of your media preferences or the sort of thing you usually do with your time; how are we supposed to judge whether it's "worth" your time or not? There is a TVT page, you know. Might give you a better idea of things.

Ya might wanna ask in the homestuck general. The beginning is slow,but its pretty barable.

It's a really interesting webcomic that has a slow start, the slow start is to get you introduced to how it all is going to go down and the systems in place in the world of homestuck. Once you get past this, it gets really interesting.

That trailer is the best way to show someone how awesome Homestuck can get.

There's also this from the Kickstarter page, which sums up pretty well what Homestuck more or less is.

"It's a story about some kids who are friends over the internet. They decide to play a game together. There are major consequences."

It starts off really weird. It took me two tries to get past the first act myself, but once I finished Act 1, I couldn't stop. Homestuck isn't for everyone, though, so I wouldn't blame you if you couldn't get into it if you even got past Act 2.

My personal opinion: The art style is simple, but amazing in most panels. Simple enough to where the author can churn out several pages in a day or two, more if there's a flash update involved. It's a creative cross between a single-panel comic, a flash animation and a flash game. The characters are very diverse, and there are a LOT of them. The humor is great and so is the writing itself. It is also VERY, VERY INTENSE, as you eventually find out as you go along, if you even do. It's also very confusing but you eventually follow everything like it's second-nature when you catch up.

It's definitely worth trying to get past the first one or two acts for.

The music, definitively the music

The story its kinda cool and have a way to attract you, the more geek or more well versed in the internet/videogame/stuff shenanigans, the more you will enjoy it.

Did you reach the midnight crew's intermission? Because I love that part. But it seriously keeps going deeper and deeper as you read. Can't spoil more if you plan to read it.

Also, it may also help the fact that taking small sips of it makes it more enjoiable. For example, I'm completely hooked, but then again, I've been following it since the beginning. Like 3 years ago it was?

I've tried reading it, got to Act 3 or 4 but it didn't really hook me. It wasn't what I was looking for in a webcomic.

Its got a general here and a general on one of the largest websites in 'murrica, so its got to get good at some point. Personally, I've read like the first 5 pages then went to do something else. No time to read an epic nowadays, y'know?

People who skip the first 4 acts just to get to the trolls make me want to kick a puppy. They are NOT what Homestuck is all about, as much as the fandumb makes it seem.

This actually annoys most of the real fans, believe me. You skip a major chunk of the story that way. BUT WHO CARES ABOUT THE STORY RIGHT

I follow about 30 different webcomics. Homestuck can be tedious, frustrating to read (Oh god, the troll typing ticks are infuriating... still), and nonsensical for dozens of pages at a time. It has a fanbase everyone loves to hate (including it's own fanbase) a la My Little Pony, Naruto, etc. It's also the only webcomic I've ever read that truly takes advantage of the fact that it's on the web via flashes, gifs, stretches of story that expand outside the typically panel space and run parallel to the main story in the panel (the midnight crew arc mentioned above), and excellent music. The best humor is derived from the acute knowledge author Andrew Hussie has of his internet-savvy readers and all the tropes and memes and in community-driven theories and fan creations that Homestuck has spawned. It's truly a circlejerking piece of glory dedicated to youth on the internet, and if you don't like it, it's understandable. But if you give it a shot, and get through the first few acts (I'll be honest, AlterniaBound - Act 4 I think - is miserable, but the story really hits fullstride after the closing flash to Act 5, Cascade. which, rather awesomely crashed newgrounds when it was first released)

If you have to ask us what's so cool about it, you're probably not going to get into it, like Ponies. Hussis is one crazy story teller, and his update output is nothing to scoff at. He already outdid in these 3 years what long running webcomic artists have tried to do in ~10-12 years.

Homestuck is about like reading The Lord of the Rings in that the beginning is slow, and the character development early on is rather heavy, but also like Tolkien's work, once it picks up the pace, it rarely slows down. It's a huge clusterpineapple, sure, but it's a sort of controlled chaos where things that seem irrelevant become plot defining later on, and things that might seem important at the time are either less important than you'd think, or don't come into play until way, way later.
The other two things that give definition to Homestuck are the sheer amount of pop culture that's been amassed since the 1980s and 90s, and the music. Homestuck has around 15 albums and counting, and excluding some of the remixes, almost all of the songs have been used in the flash animations at some point.

It took me a while to get around to reading Homestuck, and I wasn't very keen since I was being badgered about reading it, but once I started and got about mid-way into Act 2, it's been really entertaining and fun.

And on the subject of the fanbase, those people scare me, plain and simple.

I used to read Homestuck until I lost track of which characters where which, and which dimension the story was taking place in. ...Around when it switched to Jake English et al. :l
