When it comes to monster familiars, how do you get them to attack on their own. Is there a certain level the Monster Book Codex has to be or is there some other requirement?

You attack or take damage.

If you become inactive from the game for too long, taking damage won't make it attack.

So consistency is important. Makes sense since the familiars act independently.

There is no special requirement. If the familiar is within attack range of the mob it will attack.

Not sure if this is related to the question, but your character has to attack as well. You can't just afk and let it kill for you.

What you said is definitely related to the question I asked. I have a few Familiar cards, but wasn't sure how they worked since I assumed that they would attack regardless of what you do. Guess I have quite a bit to learn about Maplestory.
