It was a way people on the MSPA forums would mask the fact Homestuck has updated, without attracting rabid fans. I myself find it very funny to call the updates "potatoes". I'm more surprised I know this inside joke and yet no one else here seems to have known.

Somehow people sparked this meme where if you're late to an update, it's a potato.

Why would they scare you? They're pretty much the ones giving Hussie ideas as well as material to use to troll the fandom. Besides, they're fans like you and me, and without them Homestuck wouldn't have so much fan material and presence.
