I actually did this at one point on Pokemon Gold way back in the day, I replaced my starter with a newly hatched level 5 Pichu, which was fun I suppose.

If I did it nowadays i'd probably pick an interesting pokemon like Houndour or Litwick (Would be awesome starting with a Ghost/Fire type )

Riolu/Lucario are awesome for reasons stated above... among others... love all the pulse attacks...

I'm playing HeartGold, and when I got the togepi egg, I made that my "starter" and got it to like level 30 before 3rd gym. I also played the voltorb game to get dratini, using him aswell

I thought Gary got Squirtle in the anime (I recall he had a Blastoise at one point).

You're probably thinking of Yellow version where Blue gets an Eevee instead of you at the start, and you're stuck with the annoying yellow rodent.


Anyway, my choice would either be Elekid or Magby. Electabuzz is one of my favorite 1st gen Pokemon, and Electivire is neat-o. Magmortar because it's a Fire-type that learns Thunderbolt.

Gary knew Blastoise was UU, so he switched to Umbreon because it's OU.

Starting with a phanpy, a teddiursa or a gligar would be fucking awesome too.

I'm also for riolu, he's just such a versatile monster. The reason I was asking was because I just action replayed my starter with riolu (level 5, nothing special besides perfect ev) and it's been a blast. I'm not overpowered, but not underpowered enough to struggle. Most fun I've had with a game in ages
