(If anyone is taking something for this, I feel for you and I'm not saying that you should necessarily drop the meds right away but knowledge is power)
I don't know about you but this commercial scares the hell out of me! I mean just look at the manifestation of mental illness! ITS A F***ING BLACKHOLE MONSTER, WHY IS EVERYONE STROLLING AROUND LIKE NOTHING IS WRONG?!!!!
And just speaking in terms of basic math, this product does not make sense. There are easily 7+ possible side effects including getting extra thoughts of killing yourself and heart problems which would also cause death. So to solve one problem, we open the doors to many other potentially worse ones?! Wut?!!
Thats not to say that anti-depressants are always useless but people should really do some serious research before popping a few pills and thinking that will solve all of their real life issues.

I laughed pretty hard when it started listing all the deadly, crippling and life changing side effects.

Do you know why they list thoughts of suicide as a possible side-effect? Its because when your depressed you might be suicidal but too depressed to do anything about it. The anti-depressants might give you enough energy to actually do it, therefore it's listed as a side-effect.

Most depression medications have the possibility of worsening depression. I've been on 6 or so different ones. They work differently for different people. Some will actually make your symptoms much worse, but some do truly make it better.
I haven't been on them for about 18 months now, but still, some people really do need the medication. I did when I was at my worst.
Most of those side-effects are "worst-case scenarios". It's not a for sure side effect, and usually pretty unlikely.

Man, have you even talked to people with depression? They have plenty of experience with the shortcomings of antidepressants. More like non-depressed people need to be educated about how difficult it is to deal with depression. Which is, yes, a "real life issue".
And yeah, it's like Untradeable said. Depression isn't just being really sad or something. For a lot of people one of the symptoms is having their motivation and energy levels absolutely slaughtered, sometimes to the point where it takes forever just to work yourself up to go get food or go to the bathroom or whatever. Doesn't mean you're all full of the will to live pre-medication, just means you don't have the will to plan/commit suicide either.

Depression is horrible, I had it pretty bad last year.
I could understand taking the risks of those side-effects to get rid of it..

The only one who can get you out of a depression is yourself. Grow strong, learn to accept yourself or facts, fight for your stuff, or simply get to know your world.
I suffered it myself, and I got out without those pills... A person has almost unlimited potential. A depression is nothing once you get out of it. And you even look back and say "Damn... I had no need to feel that way..."

Eh I don't particularly approve of anti-depression pills, simply because if you ever try to get OFF of them, it hits you like a fucking truck. Supposedly. Never been on the stuff myself.

I say that now and I'm not "out of it", if anything this made it worse.

I don't believe in depression, some of my family friends who are psychologists think i AM depressed because I enjoy sitting at home and watching tv/video games. You ask me what my interests are, I'll say nothing because you wouldn't recognize anything besides "bar and partying".
Depression to me was a state of boredom, nothing more nothing less. If you've had worse experiences which justify the illness, I apologize if I offended you, it's just my personal "experience" with it.

Don't look at it as something to regret. But as inspiration.
One thing I learned is that things happen for a reason. In the future, when things go better, you'll think "If all that didn't happen that way, though, I wouldn't be here now".

And then my mind progresses to "where am I going next with this stuff"

Awesome add. Is this how medicine adds are usually there? Or this is just an odd exception?

What do you do when you've done all that, and you still fight to get out of bed in the morning, struggle to go to work and school, and struggle to go places?
Just because things were easy for you to get through doesn't make them easy for others.

As personal advise, my problems started to be easier to fix when I cared less about the problems. I know it's hard to see, but I can't really help more. Sometimes it's something you have to do. Some other times it's waiting for a chance. But whatever it is, it always depends. And you'd have to be a fool to think a depression lasts a whole lifetime. It's just a dark time that helped you improve.

It wasn't easy for me. It took me around 2-3 years to get out. I simply found a way out, if you can call it that way. All I'm saying now is from past experience. I struggled like that for a good long time, until things suddendly started to be better. A bad time is not forever. Even if it goes for long.

I don't think you quite understand how depression works in more severe cases.
At all.

In cases where there is a real physiological defect, you can't "will" yourself to higher serotonin levels.
Pikamemnon that is how it is with all medications. The probability of getting those side effects has to be real low if the medication has been cleared by the FDA.

The fact of the matter is that you can't fix a chemical imbalance by "pulling yourself out of it".
If your brain is over producing cortisol, or under producing serotonin, like Moonlapse said, you aren't getting out of it with willpower.
