harrisonized - ahh, i see!
katie - thanks (: i am working on improving my realism, trying to start with simple subjects.. for the moment pineapples are too complex so will stay away from those for now. maybe another peach? heh
throws - lovely, thanks hehe. great song
for the last few nights the CRICKETS outside my window came back, (thank goodness for earplugs) which kind of inspired this. now, my sound sensitivity is not that bad, the most frustrating i can think of is when the fundamental freq of my own voice hurts my ears - but that is all. was actually thinking of a classic autistic friend, KingdomOfRats, whose sound sensitivity is so severe that they give it another label: hyperacusis. so this sketch is dedicated to her.
the proportions are kind of off in this one because i did not use a model, also have never tried using three light sources so might have messed that up a bit.. how to make the face more realistic and pained? kind of just looks fragile, which is not really reflective of reality!
suggestions for how to improve in future are very welcome.

The expression...really hard to describe, comes off as a mixture of pain and...transformation? Maybe it just seems to be extended a bit too much. The lighting on the ear is a nice touch, but could be downplayed just a bit. But art is about the artist's view, and I am hardly one to criticize, so...

challenge: use only a 34-pixel brush to adapt this stock photo. using it as a model not a part of the picture.
(yay generic gradient backgrounds)
Nicely done, reminds me of a wooden figurine

i think i did not explain very well what hyperacusis was, it is an extreme hypersensitivity to sound. hope k.o.r. does not mind that i have copy/pasted hyperacusis in her words here, so you can understand what this means: KingdomOfRats Wrote:Can only describe sound as torture [most sound,-level,pitch,frequency and how much noise have gone through that day also make a difference to it as well],the definition am use is deep painful shockwaves that roll back and forth throughout brain and body, crippling brain in a similar way to how some of own seizures do,the stronger sound gets-the more it mixes up different senses-will become visually impaired [from blurry/messy to completely VI] until recovered from overload,am also get temperary paralysis in both legs because the signals cut off when there's too much overload, should be getting that one a lot less when move to new residential as bedroom is professionally soundproofed.
just bring on old age and deafness. she is very intelligent but classic autistic, with severe hypersensitivity to sound.
did not know how else to convey other than with light, but kinda agree with you that the light was a bit overdone! it is supposed to be a light source rather than just a glow however. when i am overloaded one of my reactions includes scratching myself, hence the second glow with her hand - just in case you wondered.
still working on those expressions, so hard to do.
yea isaac kindly merged them for me

hmm, tried a photomanipulation (using other people's stock photos and putting them together). not sure how it turned out, still kind of fuzzy? keep in mind this is not an original piece, i just put photos together and edited them. numerous copyright issues may arise (although i tried to do everything right) - will take it down if original owners object.
this is a small version. ( full size)
original photos here: faestock, xphate, dugamy-stock (stock not visible in this version), and riktorsashen.
feedback on how to combine them better?

Unless you were going for a ghostly look, maybe make her dress more solid and real and less of a see-though type deal

thanks much! she is actually supposed to be a water spirit (if you look at the full version her dress disappears into the shape of the waterfall), but no reason to be ghostly!
another sketch (work in progress!), also bad webcam photo, as before heh

Ok, that's understandable then
I assumed it was something along those lines, and it does look really nice

thank you both - and maspan for reminding to not be so see-through, would never have thought of that. maybe it would be more obvious if i had made the head, hair and upper body part of the waterfall too. lots of things we could have done on hindsight - hope i'll remember long enough for next time!

haha, I only noticed because I have a habit of overusing alpha layers/colors when I do similar projects
For example, , but a little more noticeable in
I've long since lost the stock photos, but you can see where I used alpha layers to make the rose become part of the fire itself, and where I over-alpha'd in the space layer for the ice themed BG

alpha layers! what are alpha layers?
have been reading things that talk about alpha layers.. but still don't know what they do!
those two are very pretty, the fire+rose image is a lovely idea.

The fire one is my laptop's background
Alpha layers are the invisible spots - ie, if there is a layer behind something, only spots that are alpha will allow you to see it. Think of it as "clear" or "see-through"
Gimp has a tool called "color to alpha" that replaces every pixel of a selected color with a "clear" or alpha pixel that allows you to view the layers behind it. I did this with parts of the rose to leave only the red/orange that blends it with the fire.

Holy hell, it's gorgeous. Screw constructive criticism, I love it.
