SaptaZapta Wrote:Thing is, if this were simply a result of solar activity or some other general noise on the internet, you wouldn't see neat crashes of all channels in all servers except for one or two channels for each server. Then you could SAY that you're speculating instead of peddling idiocy and conjecture as fact. See, thing is, this corresponds pretty damn well with solar interference. Server is sending and receiving, then solar interference, then servers unable to send or receive, then interference stops, and sending and receiving starts again. I say it's more likely that ALL the channels are crashing in ALL worlds, and those channels simply hadn't crashed by that point. Maybe they were a little more resilient or maybe a bit more laggy and so they didn't crash by the time the MapleStatus had updated. Then when it updated again, everything was back online and the channel had appeared not to crash, when it had in reality. I hope you know how extremely stupid it sounds to say that the channel crashers are perfectly coordinated. Because really, it's more likely that Nexon workers are simply bowling and using the server computers as the pins. That last huge crash, that was -Hime- making a strike.

Raul Wrote:I doubt that 100 DDoSers could make much of a difference on servers that accommodate thousands of people every day.I do agree with you here. That was what I meant by "resources". Granted, this comes from my understanding of DDoS attacks relying on a massive network of computers that needs to scale properly against whatever its attacking. As you said, Maplestory is designed to accommodate thousands of active users. SaptaZapta Wrote:Thing is, if this were simply a result of solar activity or some other general noise on the internet, you wouldn't see neat crashes of all channels in all servers except for one or two channels for each server.Watching the crashes, I didn't see the pattern you described. In several instances, only a couple channels in a world would be down. In other instances, entire worlds would be down while other worlds appeared unaffected. You haven't done anything to show that it's "obviously the result of malicious activity".

LOL at the people who instantly think anonymous when the word DDoS is thrown out, there was a thread on that one hacking site basically telling you how to flood the server with data crashing them aka DDoS think of it more as DC hacking the server @@@@@@

Raul Wrote:Then you could SAY that you're speculating instead of peddling idiocy and conjecture as fact. I know the channels didn't crash because some people in my alliance remained online while the others dc'ed. Other than that I don't think I'll continue this discussion. I hope you're right, because it means the problems will disappear at sundown.

Pretty big difference. Just FYI.

The problem with the solar interference theory is that there's no reason I can think of that explains what Nexon is using a satellite for or why all of their games would be reliant upon it. This has never happened in the past that I'm aware of so unless this 100% reliance on a satellite has developed in the last 6 months, I find it exceptionally unlikely.
Not to mention the problems began late last night (PST) aka after sundown.

Can we seriously, please drop the "solar flare" theory and only talk about things that are actually possible to be to blame?
yo72 Wrote:LOL at the people who instantly think anonymous when the word DDoS is thrown out, there was a thread on that one hacking site basically telling you how to flood the server with data crashing them aka DDoS think of it more as DC hacking the server @@@@@@Yeah, weird how people would automatically associate a term with a recent news item. Like all those weirdos who immediately think "9/11" when they hear "plane crash" or think "SOPA" when they hear "censorship". Meanwhile: A DDoS ATTACK IS KINDA LIKE A DC HACK!?!

I doubt it.
If you look at the status page, you can see that each channel crashed at the same second of the minute every time, with a specified interval of minutes in between crashes that is mostly constant. I see no reason why a hacker would need to, or even be able to crash the server exactly 3 minutes apart from the previous crash.

happylight Wrote:Things like that are called DoS, not DDoS. Pretty big difference. Just FYI. If you encourage several hundred people to DOS the same target it becomes a DDoS by virtue of the participation. Blades4hire Wrote:If you look at the status page, you can see that each channel crashed at the same second of the minute every time, with a specified interval of minutes in between crashes that is mostly constant. The status page does not tap the server on the shoulder and say, Excuse me, when did you crash? Write it down and report it. The status page checks on a schedule, and records the results, on that schedule. The status page has no idea when they crashed. It only knows what the status was when it checked.
It's not having what you want - It's wanting what you've got.
