Nah old maple wasn't that much better. Dudewitbow's wall of text makes alot of sense to me.
That's exactly how it was. People tend to only remember the actually enjoyable parts, and forget all the stuff they didn't like.
I remember all the "old days" myself. Sure, people talked a lot, but back then people had things to conjecture about. No one knew what 3rd job was going to be like, or 4th job, or any of the new areas being released. Now we know long before they come out in GMS, mainly because of sites like this, that extract and read KMS data. We know everything that's going to happen before it does because GMS hasn't introduced much independent content. Sure, there are events, but events are in every server, and only add momentary flare until the hype of the event wears away. Once you realize it's the same as most other events in one way or another (Somehow, you're usually killing monsters/doing a specific quest over and over), it's not really that thrilling in the end unless you make it that way. We remember the enjoyable events that weren't even really that good because we made them enjoyable.
I remember the first time I rejoined JMS with ShiKage and a few others, and we were sitting in Henesys doing the Invasion Alien Capture quest. It was stupid, it certainly didn't really give us anything worth our time, yet we did it, and we had fun. Why? Because we made it that way. That's what most MMOs are all about, enjoying it with others. Sitting yourself in a box of boredom is your own fault, and no one else's. I guarantee you any one of us can find a friend or two in any version (Mostly because English is a universal language for the most part, try hard enough and you'll find people who speak English in KMS, JMS, or any other MS), and if you can make the most of that friendship, you'll remember those days just like you remembered the "Old MS" days.

Now it's just, flaunt your gear and try to solo Pap and Zakum faster than everyone else.

I liked when Wizet still had some role in running this game. Now it's all Nexon. And Nexon sucks.
+ When getting rich wasn't a synonym for money laundering or buying heaps of NX.

MetaSeraphim Wrote:Why do people keep talking about potential? It is not like you have to buy into potential, you're still going to 2 - 3 hit monsters on your level apart from those in LKC. That's really easy to answer, the potential casino system killed maple beyond repair, because if you don't pay hundreds of dollars to Nexon, you're NEVER going to be competitive in a game that's -ALL- about competitiveness and killing bosses.
Noone cared if potential system items only worked on normal monsters and bosses disabled those by default 100% of the time. But after chaos, you can have 30+20+20 = 70% more damage on bosses with pure potential items.
In a game where a lvl120 Cygnus (1 week of training) can have an attack range of 60.000 (+70% at bosses = 102.000 attack range at bosses) if they payed enough real money vs a lvl200 (2 years of training) with an attack range of 20.000 if they didn't pay anything, there is something very, very, wrong.
No off course you don't have to use potential items, but it makes the game useless, boring, sucky, crappy, and most of all, a pure waste of time if you don't pay money to Nexon.
An MMORPG is supposed to be focused on character growth when you spend time playing your character, not character growth paying money to Nexon.
That's why it fails, and that's why people are complaining.
And yes, I miss maple when I was the first player in Scania, when I registered the IGN's Devil, Angel and Archmage...

Miss all the old days. Hearing Lith Harbor music still makes me teary eyed. Just remember the days of the game, when you first started in Maple Island, making your way up to Amherst and then South Perry. Then exploring the world of ellinia, and it's multitude of trees.
Pig Beach was the best map ever, before KPQ. Before the mark of the beta, which a lot of people no longer have, and after the mark of the beta. 'Twas the best hat in the game at the time, mainly because a lot of people loved the all-stat stuff. As well as, we didn't understand stats that well, at the time. It was only the beginning of being live. When Tespia was still open for the following weeks.
Now, leveling is a breeze. I'm actually bored of leveling now. It's way too easy now...went from 70 to 88 in 2~3 days, with one 2x event/2 hours of that. Sure, some people achieve slightly slower rates, or are faster, but damn. Not even full constant play/a whole day of play/no more than 10 hours a day. In fact, I don't even remember playing 10 hours a day now.
Let's go back to the olden days. Victoria island wasn't compact, we had a lot of maps and exploring. And random ass leveling. Everyone had fun, no one cared about stats. Orbis was the next best spot for 30's and such. Oh, and the toenail glitch! Anyone remember that abuse? I wish I could've done that. Hell, even that abuse wasn't horrible. Last year was full of rollbacks, and I wasn't playing then. Lurked SP and kept updated on happenings.
Hackers were ultimately detested, and most players would scramble to report them. It was just vaccs, though. Off map vaccing was ridiculous. Dual Ghost Pirates was the best partying spot I ever played in. Finding a party there was a bit hard though. And unlike other maps, it didn't require godlike stuff/stats/items.
Leveling was hard, but eh. Ignoring that leveling was hard, the exploration, random partying, and getting noobs killed in the henesys pit of doom. Trapping them in SW. Dropping mesos and guiding them into places. Summon sacks! The memories. Leveling was hard, but I never really cared too much. 2x was fine. 2x MULTIPLYING however. 10x+.....I did love the free 4x/8x or whatever it was, and I didn't really get rollback'd. My DK just level hopped. Comparing big bang to that, the leveling speed wasn't so bad. It was a slower big bang, and leveling felt good. Now, if you overdo it, it becomes a chore. Especially with multiple characters.
Hero's gladius was also awesome and rare. The old gladius was a cool piece of fashion.
And the beginning of the first MS private servers. Gaw, the memories.
Even if leveling was a pain, at least there were people to chat with. It's possible to solo to 100 and past that with no one to talk to, now.
Ah..and the time everyone thought stuff like tradehack and script editing was fake/illegal. All sorts of mythical hacks were illegal and didn't exist! and are now common.
/insert tears
If trading leveling speed and such would get some old/not so pain in the ass script kiddying back, then it'd be a warm welcome. It's heart breaking to see 'high' leveled people get banned for no 'real reason'.

I quit MS before the potential thing came out. No, to be more precise, this was almost two years ago. This was pre-Big Bang, when having a 15 attack SCG (5 scrolls used) on it, was considered as good. Then those damn hammers came out, then whatever-else, including Big Bang and potential. That's when Maple was ruined for me. I went back once or twice, but only to fix my NL's stats. I don't even bother going on boss runs with anyone, even if they ask me to. Why? I used to be strong back then, but now I'm just considered weak because of these changes, and I'll most likely never be able to catch up even if I did start playing again. It ruined the experience for me.
I also realize this video is quite old, and it IS two years ago, when some of us members on SouthPerry organized a SouthPerry run. This was what made it fun for me, and I started playing a bit more after the run. Then shortly after, I believed I quit. My Night Lord is now collecting dust, just sitting there.

I miss the time when I enjoyed playing MapleStory, I don't know where the break point was, pretty sure it wasn't age that made me quit, I honestly don't know what happened, but from one day to the other I logged in and noticed the game was REALLY boring, I can't even log on anymore because as soon as I do I'll get bored. Before that point MS was enjoyable, I'd have fun doing stuff in the game for hours, be it bossing, farming, anything, it was fun, maybe wait times for some things was boring, but the whole thing was nice.

I miss having an account so I could try out all this cool new stuff. I wouldn't have potential'd a damn thing, I just wanna try out Big Bang and whatever the hell else came out after that with my characters. Oh well.

I miss my shadower. I had one of the strongest shadowers in the game back in the day. Good times
I also miss when Grims + Gobies were the end game training spots.

This. Hence why I stopped playing MS a month ago. The feeling isn't same anymore. :\

I can care less about the state of the game. I can care less about how much potential has ruined or buffed the game. I can care less about how shoddy of a job Nexon is doing compared to whenever. Whether or not the grinding has been made easier, the bugs that have been fixed, the hacks that have been patched, none of that contributes to why I miss old Maple. The reason why I miss old Maple is because of my friends that still played back then.

Maple, like any other MMORPG, will have players that move on. My friends had, have, and will continue to move away from the game for reasons each to their own. Reasons that I respect, reasons that I may eventually share. But despite them moving away, the fact remains that I miss old Maple because of the memories I've made.

Feels good to have never bought into scrolling godly equips prepotential or after. I can kill just as fine with bad equips.

I don't really think its the potential system that ruined the game, it's more so the players behind the potential system.

I miss the times when we could inquire about future masteria updates with hope that they would actually come out. But alas, an area with so much potential has been lost by the wayside.
Also, I also miss when PQ's were paramount to early leveling (LPQ and ROPQ were the bomb, and also how I met all of my early friends)
To be honest, in my mind, the game has been in a downward spiral since the introduction of cygnus knights
On a side note, does anyone even use Maker anymore
When I quit a while back, Maker was just coming out and everyone was super excited about it. However, I hardly ever see it talked about anymore

@Zak video: crystallised epicness. I missed out on old time bossing since my PC sucked.
Making stuff with the Maker skill has always been fun, from one of the first Reverse Pescases on Scania to the random stuff I throw together mostly for profit and sometimes to use these days. Will be a little sad to see that go only to be replaced by the inferior Blacksmithing system.
Just popped my HS mule's overall with a Pote scroll, so will be making another much better one for it. :>
