So on a personal note, i've switched mains. I'm now taking toon link instead of the puff. Any advice? I'm typically a bomb/swordplay guy with some ranged stuff when the situation calls for it.

I mean in brawl.
I keep forgetting this is a melee thread. It should be melee/brawl thread.

It's called "competitive SSBM" just because .. SSBM can be a competitive game. I think Brawl got competitive a while back, but not sure how well that's going. Not really into the Brawl thing. I'll probably edit the title later.

Well what are strategies for young link then? I don't really remember too many differences other than cosmetic stuff.

In Melee, typical strategy (though this depends on who you're playing against...) ... >_> ... would be to constantly bombard with Boomerangs and Bombs. You start by throwing a Boomerang, as as that Boomerang goes forward, you pull out a bomb. It's basically rinse&repeat. If they dodge the boomerang and/or bomb, you get close to them and fair them, or just f-smash them out. Down-throw to Up-B works great too. I could get into the technical crap, but you're talking about Brawl.. so.. lol. I would assume the same crap still works.

Oh, looks like young link is way different than toon link. His up smash is 3 swings instead of toon link's one strong swing. YL is much less sword oriented, and toon links sword does more damage anyway (master sword vs kokiri sword, gee). Also, his Dair is WAY slower and probably easier to use as far as spiking goes, but TLs Dair is much much better imo.
Also, fire arrows are on fire. And are way faster.

Well, ya know, he does play Brawl, not Melee. That was under the assumption that the movesets are the same. I don't play Brawl.

Up B is a pomegranate move in both games.

Refer to video posted above of a competitive gamer using Down-throw to up-B. It's easily avoidable, but it reels in a decent %. I don't see how you got the idea that it's a sh it move. For grown-up Link, Up-B = easy ko.
EDIT: Hell, it's better than seeing people spamming Dairs while they're far above the opponent.

Mario DI-ed straight down, which is retarded.
It hit Roy once, and tossed him out. If Roy were more coordinated, he would have followed back in with a Forward Smash or at least some aerial instead of shielding in place while the opponent was locked in an attack animation.
It completely missed Young Link when he tried.
I don't even know where to begin with the Ganon at the end.

No way. In that one mario stage that movies right if you trap someone in those little crevaces with Dair you can spam up B and rack up 50%+ damage before they have a chance to get out of it. Aside from that, it's just great for recovery.

Link's Up-B is a pretty powerful move (though as Jiggs it's just rest bait if it misses). YL's sucks and should only be used for recovery. The only thing I can think of when playing as YL is to use a lot of bombs. They have a ton of uses. You can throw them down past the edge of the map to edge guard, and you can land an easy Dair while your opponent suffers from the short stun after being hit by one, just to name a few.
Very few people play Brawl competitively, and I only really bothered playing that game for 30-40 hours, so I really don't know any strategies or anything about it other than that Meta Knight is way OP.

I'm of the opinion that if you have to play a hacked version of a game to make it competitive, it's really just not worth playing.

Actually i just play it because it's better than actual brawl. Brawl+ competition is non-existant, and since i don't have melee it's the next best thing.

SO GAIZ BRAWL IS NOW ON THE MLG CIRCUIT. Brawl > Melee!@@@@
-dumps melee in garbage can-
/sarcasm. But really, brawl is on the circuit now. I guess i'm happy for the smash bros series, but it's still a brick to the face for melee.
That YL combo vid is like 3 years old. Some stuff probably don't work anymore cuz people know how to DI better.
And for link, it's mostly UpB OoS (out of shield) rather than using it in a combo.
And i'm attending a tourney this sunday, tips against a samus? `-` (i'll probably go fox rather than falco for this matchup)
