Your lack of membership in a church would lead to questions.

I really don't want to touch this topic, but I want to put my 2 cents in. Why the hell care what religion someone is anyways? The person is their religion b/c they chose it, you're not them, so WHY care? ..simple as that. I hate it when those pineappling Jahovah Witness people(NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE who chose that path) come to my house at 7AM on SATURDAY ringing the door bell wanting to "talk" to us. I'm Catholic but I'm SOO tempted one day to just open my door stalk naked for those buggers(they're old ladies) to leave us alone.
Me: "Hey how ya doin?..wanna have some tea?" Them: 0_o.........*runs back to their Buick* Me: "Ok, I see how it is!" "NO tea for YOOOUUU!"

Many of the early Presidents--TJ, Lincoln, and although he isn't a President, Paine--were not Christians but Deists. JQA was Unitarian which is basically Deism but you go to church.
Ignorant bible-lovers are the demise of our society. I don't understand why people still believe in that book. Get some of your own ideas. EDIT: Just noticed the posts about the "Founding Fathers being atheist". NOT TRUE. Being a Deist does not mean that you are Atheist, it just means you don't believe in the "God" that is prettied up by the Christian bible and the absurd Christian beliefs. It means you stick your head out and -gasp- MAKE YOUR OWN OPINION. EDIT II: More Presidents that were Unitarian or Deist: JM, Fillmore, Taft, Adams I, and Monroe.

Quote:Many of the early Presidents--TJ, Lincoln, and although he isn't a President, Paine--were not Christians but Deists. JQA was Unitarian which is basically Deism but you go to church. Mmhmm... mechanical world view. But they still acknowledged a supreme God watching over the universe (though not doing much in it). Quote:Ignorant bible-lovers are the demise of our society. I don't understand why people still believe in that book. Get some of your own ideas. Of course, there can't be any useful ideas inside that book at all! Quote:-gasp- MAKE YOUR OWN OPINION. And may I ask, where does someone's *own opinion* come from? Is it truly unique? If it were, she'd probably be on the fringes of society. If it's not, then it came from somewhere else.

Wait what?
Quote:And may I ask, where does someone's *own opinion* come from? Is it truly unique? If it were, she'd probably be on the fringes of society. If it's not, then it came from somewhere else. I'm assuming that by "she'd" you mean the person which contains the unique opinions. You make your own opinion by taking lots of raw data--taking a look at the world, examining some of the more pertinent pieces of information such as the reasonability of after-life and why there must/must not be a god overlooking/not overlooking our Earth--and then formulating a hypothesis which fits all of your current data. Once you are given more raw data to deal with, you CHANGE your hypothesis to fit the new data. This is not how the Christian system has been run. It has been the same myth that it has been for 2,000 years. The Bible does have quite a few useful ideas such as not murdering/raping, but it is absurd to WORSHIP a person simply because a book dictates so.

Well, to me, I think Atheism is a true religion.
Quote:A specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of personsAtheism is the belief that there is no god, right? Then that's still a belief, making it a religion or "belief system." And as for the "Get off of our country," we deserve to live here as much as our Christian neighbors or our Buddhist friends. It makes no difference. Not all Atheist people go around trying to tell people "There is no god" or "You're living a lie" but damn, this Alice Shannon person is messed up. @last paragraph, "Atheists are the reason crime is rampant." ?? Many wars are caused by religious conflict (ex. Palestinian/Arab conflict). I don't see what the reader is trying to get at.
You are correct. She is the person, and it is the idea. Now clarify on what an "own opinion" would be and why it would be inherently better than those set forth in religious scriptures.

Okay, so go tell me these 2 points that you bring up, and if your probabilities are proved beyond the shadow of a doubt and in your favor, I'll convert. - probability of an afterlife (< 50%) - probability that God exists (< 50%) Quote:The Bible does have quite a few useful ideas such as not murdering/raping, but it is absurd to WORSHIP a person simply because a book dictates so. There's more to it. Then that's still a belief, making it a religion or "belief system." Yes.

There is no point in "trying to convert you". Let's remember here, I'm not a Christian thus I don't try to convert everyone I know to "save" them. I really don't feel like posting all the reasons why I'm a Deist and vehemently against organized religion and the mindless thoughts that such an establishment creates, but to sum it all up, just get a background in Biology and world affairs and it will just open up to you WHY we have/there is a god that no longer cares about us BUT had to have done something to get us started. Quote:There is no point in "trying to convert you". Let's remember here, I'm not a Christian thus I don't try to convert everyone I know to "save" them. You just make remarks in support of your point of view without substantiating. No problem then. I'm eager to hear about your point of view, but you're somewhat vague. You say, "taking lots of raw data", but fail to cite your sources. Biology. Specifically what in biology leads you to conclude that the God of this world is uncaring? Specifically what in world affairs? (Realpolitik?) Quote:Now clarify on what an "own opinion" would be and why it would be inherently better than those set forth in religious scriptures.

lol.
Since when is the bible not encouraging rape and murder? The bible is filled with stories involving those things, and most were made in the name of god.

Mainly plant biology and the symbiosis between plants and every other animal that there is, and the perfect path of evolution that we have gone under to get to where we are... I don't want to convert you because you're obviously an avid Christian and it's annoying to type all this out rather than say it aloud (which I have done numerous times... it's so much easier to talk about in person, I sound much less rude). God does not care because look at all of the human rights problems our world has faced such as the Holocaust, Darfur, AIDS epidemic, and numerous African / South American countries... Again, these are just contributing parts as to why I feel the way I feel... If you truly are interested in my thorough, detailed explanation of why I'm a Deist... like really, really interested because you think you might be into it... I might be inclined to write an essay on it disproving Christianity and many of the other organized religions. Brandini Wrote:lol. I'm eager to see your sources on the matter. The matter of fact is many atheists claim they have unimaginable proof that God does not exit/ God is evil/ He killed my cat and the such. Yet I have never seen a shred of evidence to support them. So do tell. Where do people rape in the name of God? Murder yes. But the people murdered were often evil tyrants. I'll never understand why Atheists are so hostile towards Christians. In fact many Atheists seem ONLY hostile towards Christians even when other religions are far far worse. Look at Satanists. The average Atheist will never comment on any Satanist practices, yet take time out of their daily lives to write long paragraphs about how God is evil and how all Christians are deluded sadist fools.

Forte Wrote:I'm eager to see your sources on the matter. LOL Christians playing the victim card seriously seems so pathetic, after they have been the agressors for the past 2000 years to keep their empire/s in charge. Since when did Atheist say they have proof god doesn't exist? They just have proof that science is real. The Christians are the one claiming their fairy tales are real, they are the ones that should provide evidence for their reality. Lets ignore innocent daughters being sacrificed to god, innocent people being killed, and countries destroyed because God said it belonged to his people. There has been plenty of examples in the bible where random people get raped and killed and god blesses these people. Like in Sodom and Gomorrah when the angel comes and the people want to butt-pineapple them, the guy that god saves offers his daughters to be raped. Later on in the mountains when they survive(and the mother is called for god's amusement) the daughters rape the father because they are horny and get pregnant...these are the people god decided to save.
^Forte, that's stereotyping.
The person you're quoting is also kind of arrogant, though. It does not matter if there is a god or not. If there is a god, then you have a pretty good chance of going to hell. If there is not a god, then we'll be in some suspended state or something. Either way, Atheists are kind of screwed. Stop argueing on whether there is a god or not and coming up with detailed paragraphs illustating so. Sure, god may not be helping the Christians and people in need, but eh, how about we try to solve events such as Darfur, AIDS epidemic, and the South American countries. On the other hand, god may be biding his time, powerless against such events, or etc. Guys, sheesh, seriously, stop argueing. It does not matter what religion you are, and why you are that religion. @Brandini. We do not have proof that science is real. What caused life to exist, the big-bang, and other related events?

^Suspended state, death, same thing. I couldn't find the word for what happens to Athiests after death.
Also, some Christians might find it happy following ancient rituals. And stop bashing. It doesn't matter that much that they're not happy, hmm?

ClawofBeta Wrote:^Suspended state, death, same thing. I couldn't find the word for what happens to Athiests after death. How am I bashing? If I don't worship the gods I am suddenly a basher? Suspended state=possibility for rebirth. Death is death, and what happens to atheists, muslims, Christians, and your pet dog is all the same after death. Decomposition, non-existence. Brandini Wrote:Suspended state? When we die, we die. We are not functioning anymore. There is no suspension since there is no existence. I find it utterly amusing you're talking about morals when the type of speech you employ is the exact opposite of morals. - He offers his daughters instead because they were all gay. They wouldn't have wanted them. - They did it themselves, god wasn't telling them to rape each other. If your logic is that flawed I fail to see how you managed to get past grade 4. Brandini Wrote:LOL Aggressors for the past two hundred years? Do you believe everything some man tells you? Rome? Where Christians were thrown to the lions? You claim to know so much about these aggressors yet your flawed proof is enough for me to view you with distaste. Brandini Wrote:Suspended state? When we die, we die. We are not functioning anymore. There is no suspension since there is no existence. Have you been there before? How would you know? Does your science tell us? And most Christians try to live their life morally and happily. The question is whether people like you let them. How many Christians donate their money to Charities? How many of them are courteous and kind? Morals? You speak as if you have them. I suggest you find them, before telling Christians they are unmoral.
