Polantaris Wrote:So would you rather there be no option for aspiring developers with no large sums of cash to throw at a product they know nothing about? Because that's the deal with every other powerful engine.
The others might have a small trial, but in the end you have to pay upfront or get nothing, and then usually after that the developers of the engine continue to take from any sales you may or may not get. Unity may not be perfect but it's by far the best choice for a team/person with barely any starting funds, whether you like it or not.
Unity has a "pro" version too, you know. And that one still falls under the same complaints I have.
What if a painter were to buy an easel, and that in that purchase, there was an agreement that only certain canvasses could be used with it? What if only certain paintbrushes were allowed? What if the painter was forbidden from learning how it was manufactured, and from having a completely full understanding of how the paintbrush works? What if you could only use the paintbrush in a certain way, and you were intentionally prevented from making any modifications to it to make it function in a way you feel is better?
These are the kinds of problems that arise from the use of proprietary, black-box kits.
Being the nicest-looking or best-feeling shackles shouldn't be a reason to volunteer being placed into them.

I love my black-box kit, gives me more time to work on graphics since I don't have to code everything.
All I have to do now is add ads and it's done.

Even with the Pro Version you are still spending a significantly smaller portion of money than you would if you were going to buy something like the Unreal Engine, which, if I remember correctly, costs at least $5,000. Unity's Pro Version is $1,500, AND you can release with the Free Version, you do not need it until your sales reach a point where the $1,500 is trivial (Something like $100,000/yr total requires a Pro license).
No, you don't have direct access to the code, but you can easily learn how it works to the extent you need to for most scenarios with some efficiency testing.
I never said Unity was perfect. In fact, I specifically said that it was not. When you consider the alternatives, however, $0/$1,500 is a godsend for those of us who do not have the funds to throw at a project that can't possibly show any return for several years. For example, I started my project in July, and I'm not close to showing anything publicly yet. If I spent the $5,000+ on UE3/4 eight months ago, I'd still be in the hole over $5,000, and that's not even including Graphical or Audio assets nor any other extra assets that I may or may not need. The simple fact of the matter is that it's the smart decision, regardless of being handicapped a little. It's a powerful engine that has some limitations, and when you don't have hundreds of thousands of dollars sitting around, that's more than enough.

He's trying to say Unity is worthless and no one should ever use it, regardless of what they want to make, simply because the source code isn't provided.

The other half of the apps are fart soundboards if you're on iOS and placebo enhancement apps if you're on Android.

I cannot wait for this to hit the android market. plenty of people I know are still talking about flaccid quack and it's many spin-offs, so one with a chick in a bikini and a jetpack should get their attention right quick.
