People waste a lot more money on other games really. When you buy a PS3 or XBOX 360 you're forking over hundreds of dollars for just the system. Then people pay 60 bucks per game? It adds up pretty fast. Then maple drives people nuts with spending sometimes. Especially with the unlimited spending. People get addicted and blow their whole paychecks. If you don't want to waste money then that's fine, but as for me, I make more than enough to pay 15 dollars a month.

Amount of people is all the difference in WoW, having a populated world to run dungeons and raids is a big portion of the game.
You're really only getting half the game, I guess thats good if you want to get bore quickly, but WoW is nothing without the massive multiplayer experience.

Yes, you can compare it to buying other games, but compare it to this:
Option A:You can either spend $15 a month on World of Warcraft. You can also buy The Burning Crusade for a one time $30. To top it off, you buy Wrath of the Lich King for another one timer for $30.
You have just spent $75 in your first month of playing Warcraft, with an additional $15 a month from there on out.
Option B: You somehow found out how to download World of Warcraft, and the two expansion packs for free online (for mac, which is hard as hell to find!). You go to...let's call it "a certain website", and find hundreds, and hundreds of private servers to play for free, and all you have to do it change a line in realmslist.wtp. You get nearly the same experience, but with less people and a bit more glitches.
Play-a-logically speaking:
Option A is the better choice. You get to hang out with a bunch of people, and you can always find a good amount of people in your level range. There are many guilds that are searching for every member. You can find a lot of people to go on raids, and into instances with. You don't level up quickly, so everything is challenging, yet fun! You can learn and enjoy the game at a great pace. You can go train at one place, and when you're bored, there's easily another waiting for you. For fun, play the real game.
Financially Speaking:
Option B is the better choice. You spend nothing you don't want to. Everything is free, along with bonuses. If you vote for that server on all the Private Server Sites, they give you reward points, which can be used to receive awesome equips, and prizes in the game. You can level how quickly (or slowly) as you want, depending on the server you choose. You can find the games to download online, which are also free. If you play on a very populated server, then you can easily find people to play with. There is usually custom content, such as malls, raids, leveling roads, and more. You get pretty much the same game, but for $15/month less.
As for me, I don't like spending money on games, and my parents would never buy this for me. I really have one option I'm going to consider, lest I choose to make another free trial account.

I played WoW from Patch 1.3 to 2.2, I got tired of what they did. Classes kept on getting changed over and over. One month your class was buffed, the next, nerfed.
And second, if you think the learning curve is steeper, I don't know where you get that idea. WoW was engineered majorly for casuals. There is really not much that separates your character from another besides Talents. It's pretty damn easy to understand. You have no control over your stat build, it's all done for you. And the gear isn't really customizable as Maplestory is. Scrolling is basically multiple enchanting, some riskier then the others, with a certain cost.
Of course, one of the features I loved in WoW, was PvP. That was always fun. But when reaching the level cap, all I could find myself doing was farming and raiding, with some PVP. Raiding gets pretty grind-tastic too, repeat the same raid instance over and over, for DKP to buy your gear from the group effort.
Also, the hacker problem in Maplestory, well, WoW has the same thing too. It may not be necessarily in-game hackers, but it's account hackers. Account hackers is done alot more in WoW. You may not hear it exactly like Maplestory, because the population is bigger. But it's pretty easy to avoid it, for you and your guildie who got hacked on Maplestory. Simple thing: Don't get keylogged, it's pretty easy to avoid. But describing the few facts of not to get keylogged should be saved for another topic.
But from my personal experience... I will say, the problems of Maplestory and World of Warcraft are basically the same. There are in-game glitches that are pretty bad. The companies would both make mistakes causing server maintenancef to delay or glitches in game. Also, for those who say "Blizzard is better", don't want to hear it. People who play WoW peach as much about Blizzard as people who play Maplestory peach about Nexon.
They also have their up sides. Maplestory has alot more casual based bossing, I remember in WoW, we would do Blackwing Lair for 4~6 hours. As for WoW, they have PvP, Maplestory has none.
For the companies, they don't seem to compete directly. F2P and P2P business models are quite different. The reason I like Maplestory, is because of the amount of character building their is. They both have their ups and downs.
EDIT:
Oh yes, I did have an end-game character.

Ehh Blizzard did make pretty much the best RTS game over constant patches in a time span of two years. Sure there are glitches but the glitch fix tends to be more prompt with blizzard than with NAMS.
Cant say that Blizzard is better than Korean Nexon though because their management of the games is imo better than Blizz management. Blizzard only has 4 games to manage (until further notice); WoW, Star Craft, WC3, Diablo. Korean Nexon has alot more.

The only people I know who peach in WoW are those who complain about "class balance". The problem is most of it tend to simply stem from the part the class is crying that they can't just faceroll their way to victory, that they need to actually THINK on how to play. Not to mention looking at the WoW forums for a long enough time I realized a lot of people would also QQ for the SAKE of QQing. There are still legitimate issues though, such as the rogue Vanish bug, allowing or how to make every single class able to PvP equally.
You can only begin to imagine how much patience the Community Managers need to be able to respond to as many concerns as possible. I like Bornakk, Eyonix, Ghostcrawler, and Zarhym. They are able to exhibit concern to calm the posters, and even find the time/ability to make humorous remarks when it comes to the sillier questions, or to really shut up the really bad posts.
Example is one person peaching that just because other people cleared the newest content first that they can no longer enjoy it. The blue response?
"Amazing. You have nothing to do now that people that aren't you have cleared Ulduar" - Eyonix
And on the sillier side, we get the question: Ulduar, or a box of cookies? You decide!
The blue response?
I'm being paid at least $7 a week to respond to threads like this, so I'll be eating my cookies while raiding Ulduar and loling at you. ; p -Zarhym

I think Blizzard has done an amazing job with class balance to be honest. PvP or PvE, all classes shine somewhere or (like druids or pallys) are the jack of all trades. When I duel people who are the same level as me, it's always close. If I win it's always by a small small margin, and vice versa.
I don't see how GameMX can get upset over blizzard changing the classes. They're trying their best to balance the game. Atleast when they change talents, they refund all of your talent points rather than making u pay gold to re spec.

From a casual point of view and especially in raid-wide PvP grounds there's no difference in PvP balance because it's so huge. It's the arenas that cause the main source of this crying, since it's meta-gaming to it's extreme (2/3/5 people versus 2/3/5 people in an enclosed area). Think Pokemon serious business, cubed.

Well, a lack of patches to change classes, in the case of MapleStory, isn't much better either. Isn't that also why the Bishop/NL craze originated?
And second, if you think the learning curve is steeper, I don't know where you get that idea. WoW was engineered majorly for casuals. Well, the whole thing about the risk in MS scrolling maybe a thrill for some, but I don't think people would generally accept scrolling if they knew about Dark Scrolls being able to destroy your hard-earned items, which can mean throwing away as much as billions of mesos.
Of course, one of the features I loved in WoW, was PvP. That was always fun. But when reaching the level cap, all I could find myself doing was farming and raiding, with some PVP. The same can be said for MapleStory, since there aren't PQs for every level range, which leaves grinding and leeching if you're out of the level range. The same can be said for end-bossing in MS, which is quite limited as well.
The thing is, Blizzard actually will try to help get your items back if you get hacked. I haven't heard of such support being wide in MS though, and the introduction of the Item Lock, which can be exploited as well, doesn't help. It's like buying insurance for your game, and you have to pay for EACH ITEM. Blizzard is also guilty of this with the Authenticator, but it works for all of your characters on that one account. And I don't remember any incident about hackers exploiting the Blizzard servers to steal account information, compared to what happened in MapleSEA where their servers were hacked twice.
But from my personal experience... I will say, the problems of Maplestory and World of Warcraft are basically the same. There are in-game glitches that are pretty bad. The companies would both make mistakes causing server maintenance to delay or glitches in game. Also, for those who say "Blizzard is better", don't want to hear it. Well, Blizzard does provide reimbursement with extra game time for extended maintenances that go on for too long. MS does provide the occasional 2x Event, but for the 2x EXP cards themselves, there's no reimbursment for that if say, Emergency Server Maintenance pops up.
They also have their up sides. Maplestory has alot more casual based bossing, I remember in WoW, we would do Blackwing Lair for 4~6 hours. As for WoW, they have PvP, Maplestory has none.
Most bosses in WoW don't last too long themselves, it's the whole instance itself which takes time. And I don't really here about rag-tag teams being able to take down Zak or HT, given how servers seemingly love to "schedule" their runs in a calendar order. And if a certain guild wants to hog a boss for whatever reason, you're out of luck.
For the companies, they don't seem to compete directly. F2P and P2P business models are quite different. The reason I like Maplestory, is because of the amount of character building their is. They both have their ups and downs.
The thing is, you can't really change your character builds without resorting to making a new character or spending NX on AP/SP resets. In my example, I would either have to spend quite a bit just to be able to use the new overpowered Swords (Lunchbox, Red Katana, Stonetooth) that were released on my WK, or make a new WK. (I'm a BW user.)

Vanilla = Nightmarish because imagine coordinating 40 people on what to do, which also means the raid bosses HAVE to hit like a truck because there are so many healers, not to mention everyone who's not an officer or raid leader is guilty of AFKing through most of a raid for the sake of free epics (I did it before) because there's so many people the rest will carry your weight.
Raids members were also pigeonholed into certain specs because this was before Blizzard attempted to make useless specs actually useful. Raids were also ridiculously long. Less than 3 hours is actually fast. Expect 4 hours as the norm, for gear that may not even go to you because 5-10+ people will fight for that one piece of lewt that only drops once per week.
Almost every 40-man dungeon has a "resist" fight where everyone in the raid needs to spend over several hundred gold (a LOT back then) to get gear to be able to resist that certain element. Fire resistance, nature resistance, cold resistance. It's just..... ugh!
TBC = Hard, but much more doable because it's downsized from 40 people to 25 people. More choices on what spec to raid with makes it more bearable and fun. Also a transition from people in Vanilla who rode coattails to free epics can no longer do that because smaller raids = smaller room for error. Gear was easier to get, but still sometimes hard when the boss seems to hate the raid and not drop that loot. The boss fights are less about keeping the tank alive, and more "GET OUT THE OF THE F*#^ING FIRE!". Essentially, pay attention to where you stand and the boss fight will soon be over.
There were still resist fights, but in honesty wearing resist gear is more of a suggestion than a mandatory requirement like in Vanilla WoW. If your raid is good enough, you won't even NEED that much resist gear. Maybe one or two major gear pieces and chugging a resist pot, but no need to deck out an entire wardrobe of resistance gear.
Example of more options for classes: In Vanilla WoW, I HAD to be a healer druid in order to get into the raid. In TBC, I can be a healer, a nuker, or melee DPS/tank. It's THAT much more variable in choices of how you can contribute to the raid. Druid/Shamans/Paladins can actually do something other than healing now. Paladins/Druids can actually tank now. ZOMG!
TBC raids >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Vanilla raids.

Then perhaps all MMOs have the basic, same "maturity". From recent events we've seen better service in Maplestory, even though there are still holes.
WoW Classic had a lot of problems. And I can tell you, those down times I didn't get refunded most of the time, my server went down for a day, I lost a day.

Well people usually prefer the old maple story to the new one. Nexon has been doing pretty good since they got the new boss though.

WoW also doesn't have a mini-gm system and picks the type of people who instantly post the info the got, which was supposed to be secret, and others that tend to be smug and rude at the drop of a hat, or arrogant, etc. They might have tried it in the past, but they thankfully dropped it, or at least picked better than Nexon did.

Well, I do remember Maplestory Beta. There was no real security @_@. And if Nexon didn't pick it up, well, it wouldn't be here. So it seems to be a love/hate relation, even though a lot focus on the hate.

Just a little update. I was gonna lvl Slingas to 130 but I decided to lvl my rogue to 60 so I can check out the content of the first expansion "The Burning Crusade".
I have to say... This place scared the crap out of me the first half hour I was there. Its got that kind of feeling you get the first time you see horntail get summoned and all of HTs parts start raping you at the same time. When you first go through the HUGE HUGE dark portal you're greeted with a battle between a bunch of alliance and horde vs these huge demons with a "pit master" in the back. He's this enormous dragon that one shotted me when I tried to stun him for fun. I haven't gotten out of the first area yet but I can tell the quests are slowly bringing me deeper into outlands.
All in all, to me, WoW blows maple out the water. I'm still gonna play brawlas and slingas but I don't have much free time anymore and I'm kinda tired of grindin for 10 hours for 1 level.
