WHY wouldn't they make it just like the 3ds (aside from the 2D-only function)...whyyyyyyyyyy.

Seems stupid to remove the 3D effect completely because some games need the 3D like those special rooms in super mario 3D land. Was it too much trouble for the parents to disable the 3D via parental control if they don't want it to ruin their children's eyes?

1) I 100%'d 3D land without ever turning the 3D on, so that point is moot.
2) It's a cost cutting measure and nothing more. 2D screens are much cheaper than an equivilant 3D screen at the same resolution. THAT is why nintendo are doing this. Oh, that, and virtually no-one likes 3d anyway and it was a mistake ever including it.

Too much hate for 3D. I don't have a problem with it, and there's times that I find it pleasing and useful, like trying to catch those damn bugs in ACNL.

People managed without it for 3 games, I'm sure they can (and do) for a 4th. I don't know what Nintendos post play surveys are like in NA, but all of europes ask you how much you use the 3D on a 3DS for each game. I bet there's an overwhelming number of "nevers".

Uh... ok? And that has to do with what exactly? These 3DSes cost nintendo less to produce hence the lower retail price.

I don't hate the 3D but I also don't really think it adds all that much too the experience either. Overall I would say it has more negatives to it than positives. Playing OoT in 3D was neat and all but hardly game changing. I could easily go back to playing it in 2D without a care.

The shoulder buttons are at the top so they would need to move them because it would be too far a stretch

Not to mention losing a cool $30.2 million in that patent case.

The thing i dislike most about the 3D is that it sort of destroyed the balance the DS had with all the focus now on the top screen. You don't get as many interesting and different games as you used to.

I think this might be a scheme to make more people get the 3DS .

Only time I ever turn off the 3D is when I won't have my charger for a while. Will lower the battery drain quite a bit. At least until I can get a hold of a Mugen Battery extender.

I don't have 3DS yet as I'm waiting for pokemon usually before upgrading my portable devices. Love the idea, hate the design. I don't care about the portability issue though, since I don't play outside my home. Make the screen as big as 3DS XXL, and I'll definitely buy it.

Reggie said that they didn't want to just lower the price of the regular 3DS because it would cut profits, so they made this abomination. It's totally unnecessary, but it'll probably be a big hit with families who don't really care that much about what they give their kids. Bundle it with Pokemon X & Y (which I guarantee will happen right away) and it's a big hit.

But really, it's ugly, it removes a feature that can be turned off just by going to parental controls on a regular 3DS/XL, and those screens are going to be scratched and/or broken much faster because you can't hide them by closing the handheld. $129.99, buy today!

If they were worried in a sense over the fact the hinges could break on a 3DS, couldn't they just make it slide or something of a GBMicro variant?

I only considered it thinking 3ds was still way over 200. I didn't know it was reduced to 170 or w/e. I'd probably just buy a normal 3ds or xl when I get the money

It's not that bad. The design could be a bit better, but I suppose its good for younger kids so their hinges don't break. I'm still planning on getting the XY 3ds XL when we get it (95% chance on XY's launch).

Do I feel as if this was needed? No, I don't. People aren't forced to play in 3d, hence why there's the slider on the top screen. But, this is likely geared towards younger kids who wouldn't care (likely why its launching with X and Y). Maybe it'll be bundled with it...

I guess its $40 cheaper so it has that going for it... but not able to flip or close? Every Nintendo handheld (excluding micro) has been able to flip close since the SP. Its not really pocketsize... And when will the add that second circle pad? WHEN?!?!?!?

This. I was keeping a sliver of hope that they would release a new model with 2 circle pads...but then they come out with this...thing. Guess I'm getting a xl with a circle pad pro
