PIC Reset Security Campaign

My old PIC is something I was able to remember after a 2 year break. If I change it, I'd forget it if I decided to take another extended break and be locked out.

I'd rather risk being hacked than losing access due to security making me change passwords to unfamiliar things.

When I come back to Maple 6 (Ish) months from now for extended play I probably wouldn't be able to get into my account, as it'd be questionable if I even have memory of changing it in the first place.

Of course, I haven't played in over a year, so my account might be stripped bare right now without me even knowing. Meh.

This has actually been in the process for a few months now. Basically, anyone who didn't reset their PICs back when we changed the system in April were forcibly reset.

OH BOY, I sure love being forced to do things I didn't want to do, just because I didn't want to!

We can't really stop hackers from doing what they do. If they mean what they say, then it doesn't seem like a bad idea to do this forced reset even though we may not like it. Basil and Nexon's forums gets flooded with getting hacked topics all the time, so I really hope they're doing this just because they got tired of it and wants to reduce it. I take it from Nexon's view that it's better to just prevent it from happening and people complain about this, than complaining about getting hacked after.

Long story short, we noticed a huge trend between hacked accounts and the last time someone changed their PIC. Some people literally had not changed their PIC since it was last known as a PIN. This is why we implemented the 3 month timer for PICs. However, many people ignored that strong hint (which we assumed they would), so we have actually forced the PIC reset itself.

I'm not sure if this PIC reset had to do with anything, but as of 10:54 PM PST yesterday, ironically, my bishop was hacked. Though it is quite possible to be as the result of not changing the password or PIC within the past 3-5 months, I find it odd that it had to be on the day when PIC resets were issued.

Like any password, you should update your PIC frequently.

So, if we have some reason why we didn't want to change the PIC, that doesn't matter, because we're forced to do so by your (Nexon's) will. No matter if some of us had a strong enough PIC or have many accounts and don't want to re-learn a bunch of numbers and letters or whatever. We just HAVE to do it, because you say so.

Changing PIC is not that bad. You can always just change place of one character or something. Sure I did type my PIC in the old way a few times but in a few days I started to remember I have a new one.

Well, I feel like this PIC reset could be potentially dangerous. I noticed that when I logged into one of my accounts, there wasn't a PIC assigned to it. Not even the PIC before the reset. So if someone knew your login ID / e-mail and password, they could get into your account and change the PIC before you get the chance to. To me, it's not changing the PIC that's the problem but rather this "no-PIC-due-to-Reset" hazard.

Nothing is secure when Nexon's database can get broken into. Which I strongly suspect they think might have happened, or they wouldn't have got so aggressive about forcing this change without advance warning.

Have to agree with this. PICs do not grow weaker with age. They should not need to be replaced unless there has been some sort of leak or exploit at Nexon's end, or else the player suspects that their comp or email may have been compromised.

Yup... time to check all my mule accounts to put PICs on them again. Even if the PIC database was lost, having no PIC is worse than one on a list.

This is retarded. I was wondering why my PIC kept failing on both my and my friend's account. I must've tried it 4-5 times yesterday. If they get your password, odds are that they'll get your PIC, too. Most of my characters used something along the lines of 000000 or 111111.

That account is ancient and I don't think there was security questions way back in 2006. I've pretty much given up trying to regain access to it anyway.

I assure you, if we had had a database hack, I would have told you. I have no idea if something like that has happened before I started working for Nexon, but I would never let that get swept under the rug under my watch. Any DB hack/leak would need to be notified to the players, because most people do not use a unique login for their Nexon account. Most people use the same e-mail/username/password for most of their accounts, so then that would have been an issue of more than just your Nexon account security. It now becomes an issue of your e-mail account security and any other sensitive logins. =/

I suppose I should have included more information, but the problem I'm having has nothing to do with the PIC. I prefer not to clutter up the thread with my problems...

I've already tried sending in a ticket the time my account was deactivated. They told me to send in a piece of identification and answer a few questions. I did so, but it was rejected. Still sent in a few more tickets and nothing worked. So I gave up. (To make a long story short.)

I apologize if I offended you, but, yes, in the past we have had some very bad experiences with Nexon's behavior towards its customers.
You are doing a great job at rebuilding our faith, but then things like this happen, with no advance warning and no notice for a long time even after the maintenance, and it's just like old times.

Have you tried logging in? You may be able to reset your PIC ingame. If not, I will let our webdevs know something is up. Or is this ONLY having to do with e-mail changes?

Oh I had no problems at all, just pointing out that the "There has been an error with the service" message doesn't necessarily mean that the PIC reset or whatever people are trying to do on their accounts failed. I always get that "error" message on successful email resets.

Yes if you didn't have access to the e-mail so you could make the security quesitons when they came out, then you might be screwed. If it's true that game launcher lets you enter new PIC twice without responding to e-mail, then you are saved, but better log in fast so a hacker doesn't steel you account. -_-

I'd like to say that changing a strong password/pic is unnesessary if you don't download keylogers or tell people your info. I bet more than half of Maple's population is under 15 and not very experienced in these stratiegies, therefore they get hacked. I do not (except that time 5 years ago or w/e when the Nexon database was hacked and they never informed us or admitted to anything at all until three mounths after the event) so to me this is an anoyance. But it will probably save some hart ache for a few kids. In my opinion the kids will learn security better if they have to learn the hard way, but Nexon's goal is not to teach account security but to keep customers (the kids will probably quit after they get hacked).
