You'd think you'd want to play the more interactive ones instead of pressing menu buttons and watching everything act out on its own. I know the "Tales of" series doesn't succumb to this, but a lot of people I know play nothing BUT RPGs and it BAFFLES ME. I am BAFFLED. Aside from Pokemans and Skies of Arcadia, traditional JRPGs put me to sleep. Perhaps some of you could help me understand the reasoning...They don't necessarily need to be turn-based but they need to be story-driven. Actually, I'm not really a big fan of turn-based battles. Hack-and-slash is okay if it's done in a good way (see: Nier. For bad, see: Elder Scrolls) All of this open world bullshit needs to die. They all need to have real level-ups as opposed to this "caps at level 30 and oh yeah all enemies scale with you". The fun for me is going somewhere I obviously know I shouldn't be and trying to fight my way through it despite being crazy under-leveled. Some linearity is actually really important to me because it makes a game feel stable. Overly linear (see: most of FFXIII) is bad though. Want to be able to explore... but gradually, in between bits of story.
Spoiler
I don't just play JRPGs, though. I play pretty much anything that isn't an FPS, Fighters (just not dexterous enough) and the Grand Turismo-style racing games. I'll play racing games like Burnout Paradise.
