Shooting air = not doing anything = you cause no harm to anyone = you practically sit out a round.

It's more useful near the end, when you might be able to fake someone out into shooting themself.

I'd probably assume that you get told who got shot, and who shot themselves. I doubt we'll find out who killed who, other than self-kill cause it's funny.

Not really. If anyone shoots you and you shoot the air, you're dead.

Guaranteed not to die by shooting someone who shot themselves. Like someone else said earlier, more useful near the end.
