Need new computer

Okay, so now my choices are the Dell or to build a computer. I just asked a friend who's family does a lot of computer work. He suggests that I make a computer instead of buying one. If I can get it cheaper than the Dell, I might do that. Regardless if I can actually put it together, I can just Google the instructions right?

In general its not too difficult, everything has its own slot. Only 1 thing looks like a processor, Only 1 thing looks like RAM. Just be sure to get a processor WITH a fan (Do they sell them without fans still?) because putting the fan onto the processor can get to be a mess if you have to apply the cream stuff between them. (Hasnt built a desktop in like...3 years)

For some odd reasons, I cant just be happy with the stock cooler. I think in summer, we're at about 36 degree C on average so I tend to get a "better" CPU heatsink for my computer. The basics are
1: ground yourself,
2: place any special stuff around the MB if any,
3: lock the CPU in place,
4: put some thermal pastes in the middle, (I) use a sandwich bag to spread the cream around in a circular motion - working from inside out slowly,
5: put down heatsink and secure.

Another thing about computer is that I tend to get 2x of the hdd. I had a situation where one of the capacitator (sp?) fell off and putting a new one in its place doesnt help. Luckily I had 2 hdd of the same model and swaping the PCB worked fine. It allowed me to copy the data over. However, getting the right screw head for those starry screws is a pain....

just dont get lost in all the wires, and organize them to get a good air flow so your computer wont get too hot

Reason why I didn't go six core or any Intel proc is because of cost issues. Hes looking for a $700 right?

Also, gaming computers are going to be expensive... at least according to benchmarks, B.S., and the know-it-alls who want to spend down their life savings... or yours. You can skimp on parts if needed and not everything has to be up to some unrealistic standard that really doesn't exist at all in the real world. But what the hell lets spend till our eyeballs explode...

Symantec Endpoint Protect 11. OEM copy. Does anti-virus and firewall. Easy to use and doesn't choke the system. And anyone who recommends not using an anti-virus is clearly either criminally insane, has some form of mental impairment (not limited to drugs or alcohol), or is just flat out a complete idiot who doesn't know what the heck they are doing.

BitDefender 2011 Internet Security. It's a good antivirus and firewall suite. Normally I've used this with Linux and emergency rescue disks but it works and it highly effective for what it does. Easy to use interface as well.

Western Digital 500GB SATA Drive. You don't need 1 TB. You don't need RAID. And you don't want to have a HDD full of data that could be lost. This size is more realistic for your needs.

ASUS GeForce GTX 460... yes it' overkill for just about everything but one can only keep the peanut gallery quiet for so long before they butt in with facts, figures, and B.S. The card supports SLI so if in the future you get a second of the same model you'll have a killer system.

He doesn't need professional. Give him Home Premium.
Professional is only required if hes a comp geek or if hes in a business environment and needs to hook up to a domain.
nForce SLI is a waste of money if hes not planning to have SLI, the Gigabyte I chose is adequate. Also, it lacks USB3.

ATI is cheaper for more performance still, and since hes playing MS, it is better.

Try not to skimp on the PSU. It is the 2nd most imporant part of a computer. No power, nothing works.

Plus, Anti virus is a waste of money. Free ones like AVIRA, and MSE work just as well. Also, remember about yearly subscriptions.

Only get an External sound card if you want the very very best sound as possible. I use my onboard without a problem.

Kingston is a fine brand I agree, but the Mushkins I picked are cheaper and are slightly better. Plus I use Mushkins in my system and they never failed me.

The only reasons I have for me to get this desktop is for gaming and fraps. I have my laptop for my every day use and college work and it's not powerful enough for gaming. The most I can think of is if my laptop is in for maintenance, the desktop will be my every day computer until I get it back.

My laptop is used for college work, Facebooking, iTunes, Vindictus, MapleStory and other MMOs. That's really it. my old desktop was used for Nexon games until it got over-ran with BSODs. The more I can take off of my laptop, the better.

Note that I mainly just want a computer that can handle the power of MMOs with ease. Something like able to run 6 MapleStorys with no lag whatsoever is just ridiculously overpowered. But for the price of under $700, it'll be worth it.

If thats the case, change the Phenom X4 to the Athlon II X4 and it will be sub $700.

However, you still need the OS of course

Actually Pro is a bit better to go with. Plus it's a bit easier to fix in some cases than Home is. With Pro yes you get Network capability but theres a few other things as well. Pro also uses a better system for account management, system management for resources, and data recovery and maintenance. Plus The OEM version is cheap so get as much as you can for what you can. Ultimate just is not needed.

Home is more, if it breaks down, nuke the system and start over. Too bad so sad.

Pro is more, it it breaks, repair the software, reload some apps, reset to defaults and resume operations.

The OEM Home 64-bit is only 40 bucks cheaper... that's negligible if not a negotiable extra expense.
