Guys, credentials are worthless in mathematics. Proof is everything. That's why a patent clerk's theory of relativity got acknowledged and is something we take for granted today.
Whether Newton or Einstein said that 0.999... = 1, it does not matter if they can't prove it. Einstein thought that everything in this world can be calculated, but later, that was proven wrong. Einstein still didn't believe it.
tl;dr: Stop insulting other teachers: It doesn't contribute to the thread.

Now that is a low blow. Insult me all you want, since I'm a damn autistic (I do recall you saying I'm not autistic since I can add 1 + 1), but calling my teacher an idiot when you never have even met him? That's not even goddamm intuition, it's an assumption.

Funny, did you grab that word by word in that website?
I'm not using credentials. I'm just saying my math teacher had a proof. Whether or not that proof can be proven false is the point.

0.999 is equivalent to 1, because lim 1/x as x approaches infinity = 0. And 0.999 is 1 - lim 1/x as x approaches infinity.

Edit: Yeah, I'll admit my intuition is very, very, strong. However, I blame that on all of those Sherlock Holmes, Detective Conan, and Agatha Christie novels that I read.
Dude, don't be posting personal information.

"credentials are worthless. Proof is everything." is grabbed right out from that site, yes. And I'm not referring to you, CoB, I'm just saying that "Hey, since your teacher has less awards than mine means mine has right" doesn't really contribute to the thread.

Proofs only convince mathematicians, that's why there's about 50% of the people here who are still not convinced. You need credentials to convince the other half.
sry COB maybe I should have used that word on your teacher, but let's just say your teacher is a minority in the mathematicians population.
"That 0.999...=1 has long been accepted by mathematicians and taught in textbooks. In the last few decades, researchers of mathematics education have studied the reception of this equality among students."

Ok.
Technically no.
Because clearly all are eyes can see 0.999... not 1.
In the world of making things simple 0.999... =1
Because if it goes on forever, there is no number in between, essentially making 0.999... the equivalent to 1.
But in terms of are they different numbers, of course. 0.999 is not 1, it gets terribly close, but, no, it is not 1, if it it were, it would just be written as 1 (unrounded).

Sorry Milelke, but you're going to get the pineapple argued out of you.

I certainly hope you don't believe this. Before you go around making generalizations like this, you need to rule out all other factors. If you were a boss and you were choosing between two candidates, one who has a B.S. degree from Harvard and one who has a B.S. degree from UCLA, who would you choose?
Contrary to what you claim, more than half of the population know not to judge people merely through prestige. I'd like to see where your source for this claim is.

Depends. Three examples:
1) 0.99999 =/= 1 , two separate numbers.
2) 0.9 (repeating, with a line above the 9 indicating it's infinite) = 1
3) 0.99999 = 1 only if the professor wants you to round it.
Typically, some professors doesn't want answered to be rounded to a certain decimal point. Some might! 0.9-repeating means it's constant 9's, so most people consider that as 1. I certainly consider that as '1', myself. My reasons are already up.

1/3 = 0.33333...
2/3 = 0.66666...
1/3 + 2/3 = 0.33333... + 0.66666... = 0.99999...
3/3 = 1
Therefore, 0.99999... = 1
Eh, that's how I see it. I still have problems accepting it, but I got over it. Who uses .999... anyways when you can use 1?

The problem with that is that you're comparing exact numbers to an approximation.

I don't know what Horus master was trying to prove by editing my post.
0.999... =1 in most terms.
But if you do 0.999...+ 0.999...=/= 2 because there should be an 8 in there somewhere... but... if 0.999..=1 and 1+1=2, then 0.999.. + 0.999...=2, but thats IMPOSSIBLE, -boom, head explodes-

When you remove that link in your quote I'll remove it from mine, then (heck, you too, Horus).

That's exactly how I see it, and no, there's no aproximating there, the numbers go on forever (the 0.3 and the 0.6), so every single extra decimal in that addition will make a 0.9, reaching the infinite.

This thread is full of people who don't know pomegranate about math. How can you read an entire page with like 20 proofs of one concept and still argue with it? This isn't even a debate. It's not "the theory of" anything, 0.9 repeating and 1 are just mathematically the same number and there is no way to dispute that.

1/3 = 0.333333333333333333333 repeating.
0.333333333333333333333 + 0.333333333333333333333 + 0.333333333333333333333 = 0.9999999999999999999 repeating.
1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 3/3 = 1...?

I liked the proof on the site that broke it down into a summation. Basically, .9999999... can be rewritten has the sum from n going to 1 to infinity of 9*10^-n. That can then be rewritten as the limit has n goes to inifinity of (1 - 10^-n), which 10^-n going to infinity is 0, so it equals 1. Seems simple enough, and there aren't any weird assumptions.
I was however, under the impression that it was not equal before reading that site.
