Death sentence
#21
Rapists & Pedophiles: No. I don't believe they should be so lucky to be put to rest after they committed a crime that will haunt the victim for the rest of their lives. I believe they should rot in Prison and have years to think about why they're there.

As for killers, of course. An eye for an eye type thing there.

"An eye for an eye will only make the world blind."

While yes, criminals deserve punishment, I can't agree with the death sentance except for in First Degree Murder and in Sexual assault, for reasons explained below.

First Degree murder means that it was premeditated and intentional; planned out before hand. If it was their intent all along, then by all means put them to death. Third degree, on the other hand, isn't planned, and in a really bad situation, anyone could panic and decide that the easiest way out of it is to kill someone. It's a bad choice, but I can't advocate the death sentance for it, though going light on the jail time is equally wrong. Then Manslaughter, the unintentional killing of a person. I agree that it should be heavily punished, far more so than aggravated assault, but to give the death sentance for it would just be too much. I'd say 25 years for 3rd degree and 15 for manslaughter, personally.

Eh, I could go on and on about rapists and the sort, but eh. Long story short:

Rapists & Pedophiles: 100% death sentence, I'm all for it. If you're going to rape someone, then you should be killed.

Murderers: Yes, death sentence too. Killing someone is never a minor thing. So yeah, just no.

There are many things wrong with capital punishment; first thing is that you may be sending innocent people to their deaths. There have been many instances where innocent people have gone on death row and set free because of a lack of evidence. Who knows how many others were killed that were also innocent. Also, many of the murderers on death row are mentally unstable; they cannot see the consequences of their actions and cannot judge the difference between right and wrong. The death penalty would, therefore, not deter would-be murderers from committing violent acts.

Another thing is that countries that have abolished the death penalty have substiantally lower crime rates than countries that have not. The murder rate in the United States is three times higher than in countries such as France, Italy, and Sweden, all of which do not use the death penalty as a form of punishment. The 'eye for an eye' ideology does not work nor is it right for any person or government body to have someone killed as it has always resulted in more bloodshed.

Rapists in extreme cases deserve the death penalty but not all the pedophiles deserve to go to jail. A 17 year old can be considered a pedophile for sleeping with a 15 year old in most states. This is just wrong.

My friend when she was 14 was dating an 18 year old, the were both in love with each other but my friends parents threatened to call the police if they didn't break up. They were both nice and warm people.

Some of the best people of our society has had relationships with teenagers Walt, Whitman, Oscar Wilde, Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci, etc.

Well that is new to me, as far as I knew if you were a boy with a man a few decades ago, you'd get lynched. Maybe that is just around here...

At any rate, the death penalty is around for a reason. Many people are unable to correct their habits (ie mentally unstable serial killers), and they always have a chance of escaping from prison or being a threat to other prisoners. They cheapest way is a bullet to the head, not that I recommend that (waste removal is too difficult). Rape is like the ultimate violation of a person's rights, but I do not think they deserve the death penalty because it is generally not as difficult to rehabilitate. Not saying rape is less of crime than murder, but it is generally easier to rehabilitate rapists.

And since when was Leonardi da Vinci one of the best people of our society?

"An eye for an eye will only make the world blind." But the world deserves to be blind, and if we were all blind it'd much harder to kill each other. ;D

Homosexuality was accepted in societyas long as you weren't gay about it.

I don't see how rape is just as bad as murder. Rape is a terrible thing but Murder is the worse crime you could commit against someone. Murder is worse than rape.

Way to have no supporting details at all. Go back to the 6th grade.

Murder is tragic, yes, but rape can mentally scar people and completely ruin their lives, especially at a young age. So if not worse than murder, it should at least be on the same level, as either way a life is broken.

I really believe in the eye for an eye mentality. If you kill someone, you deserve to be killed yourself. If you rape someone, you deserve to die, since I find death more humane than rape. Do you believe that killers should get the death penalty instead of doing Life w/o Parole? State your opinions here

Hell yea! I hate these kind of people and they cannot go unpunished. How would someone feel if a serial killer just happened to wander near you?
Those guys deserve to be killed asap, jail is not enough since they can just break out no matter how strong it is.

Opponents of the death penalty exhibit a very strange brand of morality. They are so focused on the impending death penalty of the murderer that they tend to forget that he did indeed murder someone. They will hold a candlelight vigil for the murderer, but never will they think of the person he killed. If you mention it to them, they will agree that the murder was tragic, and then go right back to the basic immorality of the death penalty.

I personally don't give a pomegranate about the death penalty one way or the other. It just pains me to see how politics, in its inherent compromise of human ethics, causes people to behave in such inconsistent and stupid ways.

As for rapists, someone here mentioned "mental scars." Total destruction of personality and identity might be a more appropriate description. Without degenerating to chauvinism, I can say that women are peculiarly emotional creatures, (in that lies both their charm and their tendency to cause headaches,) and for them sex is a peculiarly emotional thing, (where for men it's often more on the physical side.) The crime of rape is not a crime of sex, but rather an abuse of physical power, which violates a woman in such a way that it destroys her emotions and her confidence. A woman who might be charming, outgoing, and lively will become timid and scared to come out of her house, and such a woman might not even let men close to her who she knows mean her well, (husband, father, son, etc.) Most people of decent morality who have seen a rape victim will conclude that rapists deserve to have bad things happen to them in prison. In an older age, they used to castrate rapists, and while that has been abolished as "cruel and unusual punishment," I am all for the good old days on this one.

Supporting details? This is purely opinion. Its like having supporting details for which ice cream flavor is better, its irrelevant.

I do think rape is a terrible crime but to call it as bad as murder is just ridiculous.

i think death sentence is a great solution, and murderers and rapists totally deserve it.
but i also think that a better punishment would be a life of remorse.
u ask how it's done?
do it like "the count of monte christo" (the movie i mean, never read the book unfortunately)...
just make a huge jail in a remote place, everyone in this jail is thrown into a very small cell, where he can barely stand or lie down (this is different from the movie, worse!) and stay there for the rest of his life, never seeing another human being except for their birthday, at their birthday they'll get whipped and beaten, and eating crappy food twice a day with no utencils.

basically, it's like killing him while keeping him alive, he'd wish he was dead, he'll regret what he did. not only for the crime that got him there, but for every sin he ever comitted.

and the bright side of it - its reversable, unless he turns crazy which wont be surprising, but still, and rapists could actually have it too cuz seems like they only want to lock up rapists which fits this method.

the worst punishment a human being can have is being alone, unable to change anything, to choose, to live.... while still being alive.

and its not like it would cause any harm financially too.

Fixed that for you, if I interpreted your meaning correctly. If you don't think rape is a terrible crime, I'm rather speechless.

The only problems I see with the death penalty are:
- When juries convict out of prejudice, when the alleged criminal is actually innocent
- When juries refuse to convict because they think the penalty is too harsh

If those can be solved (or at least just for the most part), the death penalty would be fine. As it is right now, maintaining the death penalty in the United States is moot because we're only executing a few hundreds a year, when the number of murders and rapes committed are far greater. This is because of the numerous appeals that the convicts file. Is there an alternative to this?

I'm worried that if the death penalty is abolished though, there would be a slippery slope: after briefly celebrating their victory, the reformists would target the life sentence as "cruel and unusual", until we have something like something in Germany where the maximum sentence for even the most henious crime is 15 years.

I feel that, depending on the crime, they should be given a choice. A lifetime in jail to think over what they've done, or the chance to die because of their actions. However, I think that saying "oh, they can CHANGE!" is a weak argument and is one for people who hope for the best from the worst. When it comes to murder, I feel that the point is plain and simple...if you are proven to take someone's life and not give them a chance to live, then you don't deserve your right to live either. Sure, there are "reasons" why this may not work the best, like mental issues and whatnot, but I still think that there's no reason to not atleast lock them away for life. Second chance or not, they made a big decision before they did what they did.

Charles Manson is still in jail, isn't he?

Your tone sounded like one of persuasion and moreover you're on an internet message board discussing an intelligent topic. If you're going to say your opinion you better pineappleing back it up, otherwise you make yourself look ignorant.

To, me I think they should just be killed.
Cuz those people know better then to kill people. Sometime if you think about it people who murder or rape other poeple are just looking for the deat nothing else. They know it's a law. They just do it cuz they have a grudge or they hate that person or they just REALLY want to do it. And besides if they give the person another chance that person could go kill someone else or a bunch more people. Whcih causes a BIGGER problem. So why not just kill that bad person. It's better then having a bunch of innocent people die.

I don't know how to back it up.

I just think murder is worse than rape.

Murder takes away life, and at worse rape just alters it. I value life.

I am against the death penalty but I am not going to argue against its hard to change someone's mind who believe in barbaric ideas like an eye for an eye.

What I will argue is the fact that murder is worse than rape.

Giving people AIDS/other permanent STD's (Assuming the rapist has AIDS/STD's) isn't as bad as murder?

That's lifelong suffering that the rapist just gave to the victim!

Giving someone an STD is not as bad as murder, its not even illegal.
