I haven't paid a single penny for MS and I am enjoying myself. Not saying you guys could do the same, many of you would probably get bored fast. Also, I'd rather not have WoW controlling me due to what DrRusty described.

They have custom addon-UI. That's a big positive for Wow.

DrRusty Wrote:As some of you might have noticed by now, i've been playing world of warcraft for about a month now and I wanted to share my experience of both games. I stopped playing maple due to 4 (now 5) people in my guild getting hacked and me not wanting to lose my own gear. So I decided to try something new and stay away from maple until the hackings/hackers stopped. Well... someone in my guild got hacked on saturday, and there's still d/c hackers in FM (go figure?).
WoW is a much different game than maple for two big reasons to me. First, the learning curve. It's steep, very steep. Falling off a cliff can't describe it. Deciding how to spec your character in what role you want to play in the game, learning how to spec your char around your gear or gear yourself to your spec, learning how to get around, learning how to manage add-ons, learning different strategies for PvE and PvP for your specific class, learning which stats benefit you the most and in which way, learning which classes or mobs you are and are not effective against and how to lesson your weaknesses, LEARNING THE FAWKIN ABBREVIATIONS FOR EVERYTHING. I could go on forever seriously........ The discussion in my profile doesn't answer half the questions I have. I've already respecced my toon (that's what they call char's in WoW) twice, and I plan to respec again by about lvl 60.
Second is the community. It is MUCH more serious than maple. Typing in complete sentences and not using LOL wtp OMG? is a must if you don't want to sound like a complete idiot. I actually got a warning on a WoW forum called elitistjerks.com for asking too many questions. "You have been warned due to asking for hand holding". I was like "oh shiet? :f6:". I asked like 4 questions in 3 days. These guys in WoW don't play around. They get pissed quick if you mess up. This one guy I met actually has a program that monitors the auction house (FM in maple) for prices dropping and raising. The amount of add-ons that are available are enormous. I use about 8 of them myself. Add-ons are different programs you can use to change your interface or help you in game (for anyone that doesn't know). Also, the game is actually a bit more relaxing to me than maple. It isn't a huge grindfest and there is much much more to do. You don't level through grinding, it's actually slower. You level through questing. The quests give a very nice chunk of EXP (like 5% per quest). It's much easier and more efficient to bring people along with you and it's even faster (and more rewarding) to do quests for instances with others. High level people are extremely kind in this game. I've already been pulled through around 25 instances by a lvl 70+ person. Most of the ones I do though are set up with people my own level. The instances are huge. Maraudon is by far my favorite, and took close to 2 hours to go through with 2 lvl 70's bringing me and a guildie through.
Well, I just thought i'd share. If I remember anything else I didn't mention i'll mention it later.
Edit: I guess i'll mention gear. The best gear in this game can't be bought. You can't be godly in WoW by spending a shietload on farmed gold. WoW has something called "BoE" , "BoP", and "SB". Which is bind on equip, bind on pickup, and soulbound. Soul bound means you can't trade the item to anyone, it's stuck to you. The only way to get rid of it is to NPC it. Bind on pick-up means it becomes sould bound after picking it up, and bind on equip means it becomes soulbound once you equip it. The best gear in the game becomes soulbound to you one way or another.
elitistjerks is a site for theorycrafting. I warned you not to get too much into it. First off, it changes too much to stay constant, 2nd off, you only need the basics. There's no "best spec ever" as it's always changing and each has their pros and cons. (For your class, maces do more dps than swords but pull much more aggro, and dagger/sword hybrid is generally best for pvp.) Also, don't post on that site. elitist jerks, if you didn't get it by now. And the ms community is rude too at times, often ruder depending on who it is, but they just don't get banned/infractions.
So anyways, generally I prefer WoW for strategy, and ms for weird-ass content. Btw, it's worth it to make another toon specifally to run the WC (wailing caverns) instance. It's a 3-5 hour instance depending on your levels. Generally closer to 5.
I myself have about 20 addons. Once I get my new keyboard piece, (and make space for them in my room) I'll be able to play WoW again. Too crowded in my room to play before that. The thing about gaming gear like a good keyboard and keypad is that it helps manage those bars and skills, along with selecting friendlies/mobs faster.
As for what your class is good against, you generally learn quickly as you die or get damaged. You usually say to yourself, "oh, I could have done this or that," and as you try more and more things, you learn how the pace goes.
As for rogue, they're good against everything, as long as you don't pull aggro. =D In PvP, just avoid tank specs and other class dps specs. What I mean is, rogue vs rogue is a fair fight usually, but shaman, warlock, deathknight, etc, specced for dps will usually win if they get off first hit and you can't ambush/cheap-shot. So most classes have their own uses. Shamans are generally guards, killing things quickly, so they could be considered, and palidens are buffers/tank.
I've put a lot of time into ms too, but WoW is worth playing as well. Also, unless you're high level or spend lots of time farming for mts, or have a good guild to help you or play with, you'll get bored fast without spending money. On ms, you can easily spend more nx than you would on WoW. A month of WoW is 15k nx, and there's no tax in most states, so consider how many active months you've played and how much money you've spent on ms, and divide it by the months. That's basically your monthly fee for ms. And before you reply saying it's free because of the mts, I just noted that at the beginning of the paragraph.
It's worth trying. A lot of mmo's aren't as good as WoW. There's Eden as well, but there's basically nothing to do except fight other players or mine (literally) resources. And that's only after you've trained your pilot and gotten the large amount of money for it. Other mmo's are WoW cookie-cutters with different playstyles and usually missing raids, instances, etc. EQ is a good rival, and that's because WoW copied EQ. =P
In all actuallality, FFXI, which I've tried recently, is a lot like ms in that it's grinding to level. But you have a lot more to do, hundreds of bosses and thousands of mobs. And it has a mascot. If we're talking about different mmo's FFXI is a bit better, though the interface is horrible.
Anyways, /boredrant.

If that's the case then you'll be stuck to maple forever. The more time you spend on it, the more of your time that is wasted when you do eventually leave. I haven't quit maple, but there's too much crap going on in it right now that I would rather not risk my hard work to an asshat. WoW is very very enjoyable to me. I've always begged for a challenge in maple that I have never gotten. I'm sure you've seen me drooling over the challenge Nexon promised when they released CWK PQ, only for me to peach about it later about how easy it was. I mean c'mon.... I got the second pendant in Scania with a ragtag group of randoms that got half annihilated because no one knew they were zombified. WoW gives me the challenge i've always wanted and then some. I want the perfect char in any game I play, but in WoW there's so many different variances to everything that it blows me away. Gear and builds should be built around each other and WoW even lets you "dual spec" which opens up the door for twice as many possibilities. Even after you have the "perfect char", you're still nothing without amazing control when facing another person.

Wailing caverns is a 3-5 hour instance? I solo'd it at lvl 42 bringing a guildy through it in about 2 hours lol.

I thought rogues were the kings of PvP but that's definitly not true. They're pretty much only good if they can get that first hit. Opening up with cheap shot to stun or garrote and hope you can slow with sinister strike (i'm combat build) is the easiest way to win for me. Another strategy that works for me against melee/heavy armor classes is to dual deadly poison, open up with garrote > sinister strike > and rupture. After that I vanish and walk away. With dual deadly poisons I can usually stack 3 or 4 (sometimes 5) by the time i've gotten in my rupture. 3 DoTs and they can't find me = game over lol.

Yah.... I know people who easily spend $100 a month on maple without even thinking about it. I stopped spending money on Maple a couple months ago, but when I did, I could easily spend 10 dollars a week on 2x without even giving it a second though. I love the $15 a month WoW costs to be honest.

I played Dream of Mirror before and it's a great MMO. It's almost like a fusion of WoW and maple. It has the mechanics of WoW, but the community/animeness/cute faces like maple.

I didn't say you couldn't read elitistjerks forum, just don't post. It's a bad idea. Run and return to lurking before it's too late. It's worse than SW.
You ran WC with 2 people, and it was much quicker because WC is for lower levels, max 23-25.
If you're doing PvP, you should respec. Combat is best for PvE, and PvP you should be subtle and/or assassinate, and usually a mixture. Never leave out dual specialization though. And generally, unless you get the talents for it, Ambush is usually stronger and gives 2 combo points.
And yeah, prices, prices...
Idk Dream of Mirror, and I really don't want to start another "free" mmo. Specially since it sounds like La Tale, and that's basically MS with different skills to spam.

Oh God.... WoW sounds like a drug! My RL friend tried to get me to play it... but I thought the graphics were tooo ugly! I'm attracted to Maple for some odd reason and it's not because I spent nx on it...
But I've been playing for 3 years (June 23) and I love it.
I was planning on playing WoW but didn't like the monthly fee pomegranate...
The only other MMORPG I play is Rappelz! <3

I haven't spent a penny on WoW yet, the first 3 months are free for me. I'm going to have to buy both expansions probably by the weekend though. In 2 levels (lvl 55) I can make a death knight if I buy wrath of the lich king, and lvl 58 i can go to Northrend (Burning Crusade). It's a good thing I get payed on Friday. I like how you can just download both expansions off of the website instead of going out to buy them in the store. In every really big pile of $hit there is a diamond somewhere. Some people find the diamond, most just get their hands really dirty and get nothing.
As I have argued many times in the past, while there are people who have the self-control to play Maple for free, the vast majority of Maplers do not see it that way. The flourishing of Nexon as a for-profit corporation has happened for precisely that reason. If they're really "free" as they say in all their commercials, how the hell are they getting so rich then? The proper definition of things such as safety charms, shop permits, 2x cards, owls is "luxuries" or "options," but a person addicted to Maple will see them as "necessities." It is a very easy leap to make, and with people spending all around you nobody will question it. If you're grinding on Maple 12 hours a day, those things are a comfort you'll go nuts without. Nexon knows this very well and does its best to encourage reckless spending. I might add that Nexon makes a fortune off people that stay at lvl 31 but squander money on smegas and multiple NX outfits. In the end, it is not intrinsically the path to higher levels that enriches Nexon, it's NX charging, and a lvl 31 CAN charge as much as a lvl 16x. As a former Maple addict I can't say that Maple is in the end a fun friendly game. More like a stressful full-time job where you pay someone to be working.
As for Maple being valuable in terms of learning to code, you could say that about any game. For example, a game (for adults) that I found has very rapid real-time PvP combat, and coding skill accounts for victory much much more than expenditures on their version of NX or even experience level. You literally program your character using strings of code to take actions or react to other people's actions, and when combat happens you don't have much input at all.
Put simply, a person that is addicted to either WoW or Maple could in the hours spent playing engage in more school work or gainful employment. If we use players such as FangBlade or Tiger as references, if a person worked at a job as hard as they did at grinding, they could quite possibly end up with a down payment to a condo, or good grades and advanced degree from a college. With Tiger and FangBlade, we're probably talking between 12 and 18 hours a day grinding. I maintained a 3.78 GPA in the first two years in a mediocre college, assuring me high dean's list standing there, and a transfer to a much better college, (their transfer program had a 9% admission rate,) but even THAT didn't take me 12-18 hours a day studying. To use a computer science comparison, if a person were to practice coding for 12-18 hours a day for 3 years straight, he'd probably end up at Google or Microsoft, (or an equivalent employer,) working equivalent hours for a very nice salary. One of my friends DOES work that much, he earns 80,000 dollars a year and has a cushy position in his Silicon Valley company, and that salary increases on a regular basis. Another one of my friends abandoned her rapidly leveling pro mage account and put her skills to work at a fast-food chain. Less than 1.5 years later, she's in training to become a full manager, (a VERY fast rate of advancement given the time she's spent with the company, very good salary and full control of her restaurant,) and her employer is so satisfied with her skills and work ethic that she is certain to get promoted much higher. Isn't something like that a greater achievement than a lvl 200 night lord?
I have no clue why the truly "dedicated gamers" don't with equal fervor study or work. They would be at the top of the business world in the end because of it.

Its becuase WoW is a constate rate of money, maplestory, i can get Nx one time and never pay again. I DO use NX, but only to help my guild, and look like an NX whore( I never buy gacapon or 2x), in reality i get about 30$ Nx every 3 Months. WoW on the other hand is 15$ that i MUST pay, and i dont like HAVING to pay for something. Thats the main reason.
BTW, I play maple for the social, not for the grinding hours on end for a single level gain.

Quoting for extra emphasis. You make a great point. These people who have lvl 200 chars or even 180+ chars. If they focused all of that effort into something that will profit them in the future, they would probably all be rich. Us "hardcore gamers" have shown that we have the stamina to do things for long periods of time without getting bored. Whereas someone who likes to go out clubbing, drinking, and smoking probably couldn't do the same thing. My little sister is in her upper teen years and she is one of those people who you will only seen home after 10 o-clock at night. All I ever hear her talk about after doing something for 15 minutes is how bored she is.
Maple is a free to play game. Anyone who argues against that is plain ignorant and that's it. The strongest players I have ever met haven't payed a cent on this game. They have more NX and more mesos than any person I know who spends money. Of course I do know some people who have spent THOUSANDS of dollars and are up there as well.

It's still not the real thing. It's much more enclosed because there will only be a handful of players, and you always risk the chance of Blizzard finding the PS and straight shutting it down. In that case, effort is wasted playing in a PS. Even worse, not everything works. A game that is already 11 GB in size and growing, there WILL be bugs or non-functioning features. Sorry, but at least I won't feel shame playing the actual game.

If you're going to play in a 1x private server then why not just play in the real one? Private servers seem like such a waste of time to me. It's like playing a bootleg game or watching a bootleg movie. Sure it's similar, but it's no where near as good.
I saw this video of 5 people invading stormwind on a private server. I couldn't see the point in it at all. The NPCs didn't move and there were no people on the alliance side to stop them. It was completely pointless.

Most people I know, including myself, would say the superior gameplay greatly justifies the cost, and its been cheaper than Maple was to me in the long run as well, WoW is good while it lasts, but endgame gets stale to me.
I tend to drift between games, and play Maple in between.
WoW's graphics shouldn't be critisized, they're ingenious on Blizzard's part, if you have a high end PC, you can crank em all the way up and WoW'll look great, whereas low end PC's still get the experience of WoW without having to upgrade PCs, it expands their customer base a lot.

I would love to play the real WoW. I'm just not going to pay anything, and the 10 day trial only lets you:
-Play for 10 days
-Max at 10g
-Max at lvl 20
I'm not going to waste money when I can play same thing with minimal differences.
