The Consequences of Rare Maple Items
#21
Merchants don't raise prices, they cause them to tend to what they should be based on supply/demand rates.

Honestly Maple weapons are quite useless, though, I've never understood the fuss over them. I use them on my CPQ mules but they're nothing compared to higher level equips.

Maple weapons are only good for [stat]less characters, like the LUKless mage. Without maple weapons they'd be using the beginner wand from 8 to 133.

There's still the umbrellas, green paintbrush, nocturnal staff, and level 70/130 elemental wands.

I still say that people were merely spoiled by last year's event. We weren't even supposed to get the level 64 versions back then since they were initially released in this event on older versions. Of course, having done that last year, they should have used common sense in that the player base was going to expect more this year... Tongue

Regardless, think of it this way; Now statless isn't both overwhelmingly powerful and overwhelmingly easy to obtain. Some people really should just give up at a certain point and use the regular line of class equipment. And if you think that what I've said make me a hypocrite for some reason, consider this. I don't use a ZHelm either.

Referring to economics; yes greed is an inherent trait of man. The younger the individual, the less restricted their greed (IE babies cry till they get what they want, and kids whine to do the same). Given the demographic of this MMO, I'd say that the FM situation is about as expected.

Unfortunately, Maplestory's economy runs on almost a pure capitalistic system. About the only things the government (Nexon, in this case) imposes are which items can or cannot be traded and tax rates.

They also control supply. If something is incredibly common, merchanters wouldn't be able to do anything about it, no matter how hard they tried.:f6:

Harharhar, like the times where they've bought out all the apples in the FM, then sold them for up to 1m over the rate before, causing massive inflation, yep, the natural trend right thar!

Another problem is that the currency is rare itself. Even at high levels the monsters drop really bad rates of mesos. (This is why people lose money training)

Because of this, the average person can't make money unless they farm good rare gear, merchant, sell leech, etc. This creates a bigger division between rich and poor. As if that wasn't enough, since items that are expensive are hard for the poor to get, it usually goes up more in price, because the rich affords it too easily.

It's so much different than any other mmo or single-player rpg. Usually there's tons of ways to make money at any level, deflating all but the most rare (.01% from rare and/or boss mobs) drops.

Do statless Pirates need these weapons? I mean, come on, it's kind of easy to make a dexless Infighter that still hits everything-even without the Maple Gloves.

If people are willing to pay that much for apples, that's how much they're worth. Goggleemoticon

MasPan Wrote:Noticed something this patch that pretty much makes me disgusted in the player market in gMS right now -

Hard to find maple weapons results in massive hoarding, stockpiling, inflation, and general greed. People who have no intention of ever using the guns/knuckles/shields are hoarding them, buying all of them they can find to hold for several months after the patch. This in itself makes the items appear even more rare than they really are, further inflating them (vicious cycle).

This is the first year the pirate weapons have been available and, thanks to the actions of a small percentage of each server, few will actually be able to enjoy them. Even when the anniversary worked this way 2 years ago, people were still able to get the weapons they wanted/needed at a relatively decent price once the patch had been going for more than a day or two, and people were quite willing to share information on where to get each item.

Tldr, bad move Nexon for making Maple Items difficult to find this year, and I'm disgusted in the community right now for the greed and hoarding therein.

-Note-
This isn't a rant, just a reflection. While there I am a bit angry over the way this patch is working out, I really don't find it PoH worthy.

Epic Poast right here. You sir, deserve a monocle; [/img]http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/7485/exp01a.png[/img]

But seriously, this has gotten out of hand. I was barely able to get my lvl 64 staff (wanted the effect), when, last year, there were hundreds in the fm 2 days after the patch. GTFO selfish, greedy money h0res.

No it isn't, forcibly reducing the supply forces the price up far higher than it should be, merchanters are just being self serving douchebags as usual.

You can't keep the supply of something commonly available from APQ a complete monopoly. Say I bought every 60% staff scroll in the FM for 2m and stick them in my shop for 5m. Are the prices going to go sky high? Not for long, because people aren't actually willing to buy loads of 60% staves for 5m. The only way for me to keep the prices inflated would be to keep buying them over a prolonged period of time, which requires far more money than I have. As soon as I stop buying them prices would tend back to what they're actually worth.

Unless the merchants in question have an infinite amount of pure mesos, there's no way they can change prices of something as common as Apples at will.

Strengthless Gunslinger.

Maple Weapons also have better stats than normal weapons close to their level. Who would opt to have lower stats?

This argument subscribes to the fallacy that someone will come along and put in the scrolls for the cheaper prices, when in truth they're likelier to see that "everyone else" is a new higher price, and therefore charge that price or near it themselves.

There is no magical MapleStory Blue Book that lists the fair price for every single item at all times. Most people just subscribe to monkey see monkey do.

Which is why I said "only the insanely rich" in my earlier post. Only if you can constantly buy out the new shipments of whatever iten you're trying to raise, its just a waste of effort. If you can, the "monkey see monkey do" thing starts to take effect.

You try to get as close to a "monopoly" as you can so that supply and demand don't matter anymore. If you control 100% of the supply, then you control the price regardless of demand. Someone is going to need that 60% staff eventually, and as soon as everyone sees that someone bought one for 5m, then they all price theirs for 5m.

FM guilds are insanely rich. They have resources of not just a single billionaire, but on some worlds serveral hundred billionaires.

There are consortiums that can easily price fix at whimsy.

This is why having a free market system with too much freedom is a problem...The people who support that have too much faith in people, since when do people who control the markets have morals? <3 oversight =]

Which was exactly what I've been doing while I've been studying for finals for the past several days lol. I already got a few chairs on a number of characters, a ton of leaves, and a few Maple weapons... including a Maple Gun and Maple Knuckle. It pays off. Smile Then again, I have given away the equips I got to friends in alliance, so meh.

BTW, I do agree with LongShotJohn. There were tons of Maple equips that were available to the public very much last year. The drops were so frequent, it's not even laughable. But now... your best shot at a Maple equip (excluding the hat, earrings, shield?, umbrella?) is the Maple Tree.
