Bayonetta has sold around 20,000 more units total to date, but Xenoblade sold over 50% more copies than Bayonetta in Japan. But as you said, Shulk is an actual Nintendo character so it doesn't really matter and he'd have far more weight as a potential character on the roster.

Right. Because there is totally a set limit of third party slots and also I remember that thing where Pac-Man is selling games.
I mean, I get that Namco is helping make the game, but he serves as little practical reasons as Snake did.

The line of characters that deserves to be in (not to mention that smash is releasing before bayonetta even gets a game on a nintendo platform in japan) is a mile long.

Arbitrary restrictions, ahoy. I mean, really, how do you justify saying that one character deserves it over another?

But I get ya. I mean, it is Nintendo. Maybe they aren't interested in trying to sell games.
Maybe they're more interested in their long-term relationship with the developer.

Or maybe we should stop with counting characters out just because our personal bias is sneaking in.
Keep in mind, I'm not saying Bayonetta will be in or should be in (I personally am not a fan of the genre and stopped playing a couple of levels in), I'm just getting tired of all the shitty rationale being thrown around.

Nintendo has no reason to "build a relationship" by adding a character in smash with platinum of all people. They'll make games for whoever is throwing money around, because that's how that company works.

And yes, there is an "arbitrary" limit to third party characters. This might blow your mind, but have you heard of this thing called "money?". People use it for transactions of goods and, in this case, property i.p.
Specifically, no--one is going to give nintendo use of characters for free, and will have signed this thing called a "contract" between them and nintendo whereby nintendo gives some of this "money" to them to use the character in Super Smash bros.

Also: Sticking a bunch of third party characters almost at random sure did great for playstation smash bros.

Wario (Gain a total of 1,000 coins through classic mode, or 200 vs matches)

Ganondorf (Play in Gerudo Valley 10 times, or 300 vs matches)

Hmm, they don't seem that bad. At least they give you an alternative for duck hunt. Wasn't playing 1000 matches or something the only way to get Mewtwo in melee?

Or 20 hours of total VS. match game time. (You could cheat this by plugging in 4 remotes and leaving the game on in a match with 4 human players for 5 hours)
