Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS Discussion
Thugnificent Wrote:I know without a doubt that they are going to make the online play as smooth as possible, or risk facing a horrendous backlash from the community.

I don't know about that...smash community is already heavily anti-online despite brawl's online existing and despite netplay existing for P:M and melee. Online tournaments are really rare, and no one attributes weight to their outcomes outside of novelty because the only results that matter are in tournament, which are not online. If brawl and netplay's online was unshakably solid (disregard the fact that brawl is a terrible game), we might see a larger online prominence, but because it sucks i seriously doubt that anyone would really care enough to rally support to give "horrendous backlash" if smash4's online is worse than expected. The only thing it would do is make the game A LITTLE less popular, but the game will still be an absolute raging success otherwise.

I shouldn't have said community, since that implies 'Smash' community. What I meant was there will still be a good amount of people that will be quite upset, especially since the wii u has so much focus on online lately. The wiiu has so many online services that enable you to reach out and meet others that have a wiiu. With Miiverse, and the communities there, most people will want to battle each other online. Those are the types of people that nintendo could face a backlash from. Imagine the miiverse being flooded by frustrated users, appalled at the lack of online support AGAIN. Personally I'm one of those "invite your friends over to play" kind of people, but there are times when I would want to play with people from around the world. This game will be a phenomenal success, there's no doubt about that, but I think if they don't get this online problem fixed,

Everyone who plays smash is part of the smash community Tongue

I understand what you mean, i just don't think it can possibly reach that level unless online was literally broken. It will certainly impact 3DS tournaments if it is at all laggy though.

Wouldn't 3DS tournaments be very difficult anyway?

I've not been in the situation, but I was under the impression if you have hundreds of DS/3DS/whatever devices all trying to use similar frequencies at once in a small area, it has a negative effect on connection speeds

Yeah. One of the problems that tournament organizers have to work around if such a tournament were possible. That problem directly influences 3DS smash's success in the first place though so i'm sure it won't be such a big deal.

There are very many stresses in organizing tournaments that being on a handheld would completely solve though. No need to worry about set-ups since players have their own devices, no need to worry about venue as much because it's a handheld so you can just play in a parking lot if you want, etc.

I predict a perfect 40/40 on Famitsu before smash is even released.

I wonder if you can play over LAN if people connect to the same network.

I wonder if Nintendo went back several generations and brought back the link cable we wouldn't have to worry about 3DS interference lol.

It'll probably play fine with any of the control options, but I wouldn't want to use the gamepad for smash anyway. I'd rather have something ...standard controller shaped,

Most definitely, yes. Most if not all of the reasons have to do with things that only apply to people who go to tournaments though. Stuff like input lag and the use of CRT's vs HD TVs a vastly large majority of non-tournament goers do not notice at all.

Every person i talked to when i went to best buy said that the pro controller was really weird and different in it's layout, since they switched the location of the C-stick with the location of A+B+X+Y, but also for other reasons like the control sticks themselves not having the "grooves" that the GC controller had which allowed for more precise control of movement. This is compared to melee though, where we had the most freedom of movement of any smash game.

Totally up to you if you want to use the gamepad. It will probably take a lot of time to get used to, which is why most people would rather just use what they have played the most with which is by far the gamecube controller.

Well I don't know, how good would it feel to play a fighting game with a weighted slab of plastic

Just playin; different strokes for different people. But I'd use a textbook controller myself. It really depends on your play style

Just saying now that if you do get a gamecube controller, it'll probably only ever be used for smash. That may not be a bad thing though.

Ok guys i ordered the peach one. Sometimes it does feel like playing with a tray using the gamepad..but i might try using both options. I think these gamecube controllers for wii u act like pro ones with a different design so hopefully i can use it with other games too.

I played brawl with sideways wiimote i think... i can't remember.

I don't think this was ever said anywhere, ever.

For one thing, it's missing several buttons that the classic controller pro/ wiiu pro controller have. Namely the triggers and clickable sticks, as well as a minus button, which mean it's not simply a different designed controller. I think sephie is right and you can expect it to be used for smash and basically nothing else. (Unless gamecube virtual console does happen, but i'm doubting it happening for this gen at this point.)

''A Classic Controller Pro for the Nintendo Wii U inspired by the original Gamecube Controller. Available as Mario, Princess Peach, and Yoshi. The Wired Fight Pad is virtually wireless as it plugs directly into the Wii Remote Connector Port. Players can use the Wired Fight Pad for Wii/Wii U games that support the Classic Controller, the Classic Controller Pro, as well as Nintendo Virtual Console games.''

is what the blurb says on ShopTo so i just assumed is all. oh well if its only for smash i better become a pro!

Oh god, you bought a 3rd party pdp "gamecube" controller, lol.

You won't need the gamecube adapter for that because it's not a real gamecube controller. Yes, you can use that one with anything that supports a wii classic controller pro, but it's never going to be as good as a actual gc controller.

eh it says its officially licensed just like those Mario branded Wiimotes they sell.

I don't know if i should feel insulted or just sad :/

That i encouraged someone to buy a third party "gamecube" controller while comparing with the real thing T.T

It actually doesn't look terrible and she bought it for looks so it's a win but literally nothing i said before applies to it so hopefully she doesn't have buyers remorse or anything.
