Unscheduled Maintenance - February 7, 2013
Justin Wrote:lol I don't care about the box being fixed, it was an exploit, yes, it needed to be fixed. I'm not complaining about that. I'm saying their priorities are retarded. When I find 90% of stronghold maps filled with nothing but people floating in the middle of the damn map, killing everything in 2 seconds (90% of the time they're kaisers ffs), that's when I think things are getting out of hand. Hackers get to 200 without even being looked into. People would rather buy the subscription required to acquire these hacks than buy NX. And more and more people are buying into it. Even just 2 months ago, when I went into a map and there was a botter, he ran. Now? They don't give a rat's ass. They just keep on killing the entire map in 2 seconds. Oh, and when all of these botters finally settle in and are making 500mill plus a day per character they have running because they don't get banned, you'll start to see why botting isn't something to take lightly.

I am not demanding some magical cure for hacking. That will never happen. But a hack should not be around for THIS long and still not even be acknowledged by the people in charge. Hell, Nexon outright LOCKS threads on their boards that have anything to do with it. That's how badly their blinds are closed on this stuff. They just don't care.

And yes, us "funded high levels" are the ones who are complaining, because we're the ones who pineappleing paid Nexon the money to get where we are in the first place. It's annoying when I have to sit in a room for 3 hours or more trying to get into a boss because there's some jackass wearing level 120 clean equips getting in before me when he shouldn't even be there. You can say what you want, but at the end of the day you would feel the exact same way if you were in our shoes.

Obviously Nexon cares they have been banning a lot lately. Fact is they don't have the intelligence to patch any hack script from that vip trainer. List me the scripts that they have patched from that trainer, go on, it might take a while for you to get a list together.

From the top of my head: exploding arrows WH hack a few years ago.

That's it.

Teleport Mastery and non delay hacks have been around the game since Big Bang, and nothing has ever been done about it. I don't understand the massive spam of posts here about it, as if there's actually some expectation out of Nexon. You're setting yourself up for disappointment every single server check, cause if you have been around the past 4 years, you should be aware that Nexon can't do anything about it other than ban.

Also from what I gathered reading those forums, a kaiser doesn't need the so called "stack hack" to kill empress, they can use their non delay script and it's sufficient. So everyone here talking about stack hack stack hack, you should be talking about non delay hacks, which is something that's been around the game since forever.

Nexon even attempted to get those guys to court, which was probably their attempt to get rid of the hacks right? They couldn't get rid of it themselves so they said okay how about we sue them? It is sad.

I couldn't care less about prices, it's just that stuff isn't selling due to the crazy amount of stuff being put on the market. I think that's a bigger deal than the price of boss drops for me.

Captain Wax Wrote:Pretty sure those were glitches (green mihile and tempest blades)

They fixed the kaiser flying up rope thing DC. That was most certainly not a glitch. FM rooms were cleared out because of that.
They are letting more serious issues slide, which was exactly his point.

How can you be so sure they're "letting it slide"? More likely than not they're working trying to figure out a fix to the hack. Believe it our not people shouting at programmers to program faster doesn't actually make they go faster.

Captain Wax Wrote:Would be nice if these issues would be found before the patch came online.

Yes. Yes it would. It would also be nice if car accidents never happened. Unfortunately mistakes happen. Coding is imperfect and there will always be some bug that you missed during any testing. I've always been an advocate of Tespia but Nexon gave a pretty good reason why they shut it down. People just weren't reporting useful things. The reports they got from tespia were mostly junk. The few actual bugs report were lost in the muck.

Captain Wax Wrote:Nexon doesn't even acknowledge the issue of stack hack. How is that excusable?

It's not excusable but it isn't a reason to vilify them. It seems to be their policy to not acknowledge hacking until they've dealt with the matter. This is how they've always done things. I don't agree with it but I don't see a reason to attack them for it.

Captain Wax Wrote:Nexon made an unscheduled maintenence within 2-3 days of this exploit coming out yet Nexon lets hacks go for more than a month, while their GMs can't even tell who is actually hacking (I saw a SS on basil where a lone Kaiser was talking to a GM and the GM left shortly after without doing anything, the recent permaban list). Do you really not see anything wrong with that?

Of course there's something wrong with that. Nexon has long had an issue with their employees knowledge of the game. I can't defend them on this one. It's a problem that I hope they fix. But you can't honestly relate them fixing the feather exploit with GMs not being knowledgeable about the game. The two aren't even related.

Captain Wax Wrote:Empress is indeed profitable but for most players it isn't worth waiting hours of their own time trying to get in with hackers killing full empress + deflation of drops

I agree that the hacking of empress and CPB needs to stop. But once again raging at Nexon every time they do something not related to stack hacking isn't a solution. As I understand it Nexon Korea does the programming for MS. NexonAM needs to to wait for them to send patches and fixes. Do you think the Korean programmers are spending their time reading forums going "oh that's a lot of anger, we should work on this more"? NexonAM has done everything it can short of saying "we know there's a hack and we can't fix it yet". Do you think people will be less angry when they see that?

LoveVictim Wrote:snip

Thank you. Nexon is doing what it can to ban hackers. What would the community rather have? Banning hackers with collateral damage or not banning at all? Yes I'd love it if there was no collateral damage but we don't have that option right now. Either way Nexon loses. With the collateral damage people rage on forums about being wrongfully banned. Rightfully so, they've been wrongfully banned. If Nexon chooses to not bad people rage on the forums about all the hackers. Rightfully so, there are hackers.

To us it seems obvious what's hacking and what's not. We're in game a lot more than GMs are. We read forums, we play all the classes, we know what's just lag and what's not. But GMs don't. They're job isn't to play MS. They're not being paid to play a video game and lets be honest. If you were a GM and spent your whole day working on MS. Would you wanna go home and play MS? The only possible solution is to put GM powers in the hands of select players. But that runs into a whole swarm of problems associated with it. Do you pay them? If not how do you control their behavior? Do you ban them if they abuse their powers? What if they decide to quit and mass ban everyone at 3am on Christmas eve when no one's at NexonAM headquarters? There's no easy fix for this. All we can do is hope they might one day find a fix for stack hacks.

Chilly I haven't delved much into your post though I've browsed quickly through it. But here's my take on how hacked items or items which were obtained through hacking, effect the economy. They make it unfair. That's a simple reason but isn't it reason enough why they are bad morally and/or economically? If one person can create infinite amounts of bootlegged 'designer' shoes that look exactly like the originals but sell for 1/100th of the price, that devalues the effort put into making the original shoes, may potentially put the original seller into bankruptcy, and what happens to the real shoes? They now become absolutely obsolete. Who cares now about the effort to make them when they're replaceable? You may say that that seller still is well off, but what if that seller just started the business a year or two ago? Is that seller really well-off? That seller's credibility can also take a huge hit if/when it's found out that millions of that shoe are being bottlegged. Past customers can go "oh look this guy is selling fake shoes too" because they may not be able to tell the difference between what's real and what's fake.

When duped items first came out (afaik it happened before potential came out) supposed legitimate sellers like MTSnowy took a huge hit. People like that may have been considered godly at the time but out of nowhere people started having comparable damage to them for a tiny fraction of the price spent under normal circumstances. So now these legit merchants are suddenly weak comparing to just about everyone, potential comes and while legit items in the MTS are deflated and have 0 value, the dupers and dupe merchers are getting loads of NX selling loads of items. Their power multiplies tenfolds because what do they spend their newly obtained NX on? Shiny new cubes. What to do for the legit merchants? What else other than start taking advantage of duped items like rest?

People do not look at it from the point of view of the person who prefers to honestly work for their rewards, because of natural selfishness or opportunism to get the most reward for the least work.

Now let's look at it from the perspective of an item. It took me much time and effort to honestly make an ele wand 6 as godly as I could make it. I spent a good year looking for 50% wand scrolls, bought them for 200-500m each when i did see one in a shop once in a blue moon or got a bit lucky with one showing up when I opened a golden chest out of quite a few. I bought the wand itself clean in MTS for about 50k nx around sometime in 2009 and prepped it to become my near-end-game weapon. It took about 150 cubes to make it unique with 3 great lines. It also took quite a few pam songs, wards and I also enhanced it 6 times. Came out to be this: http://www.basilmarket.com/show/auction/16114616 Then all of a sudden I saw ele staff 5s in MTS selling for 10k nx while I spent hundreds to make my wand what it was. My wand in a matter of weeks became worthless. Good for the economy eh?

That massive WoT tirade you went into wasn't about the economy at all but rather about how hackers have basically screwed you over personally, we get it, you don't like how all of your hard work can be made into nothing in a second.

I think the main difference here that people argue about is if you're someone who had some decent equips you worked really hard on before hackers came and ruined it you are going talk about how it is ruining the economy when the actual case is you're just pissed that your "hard" work now counts for nothing.

However, if you hardly had a decent equip to your name before hackers came and ruined the "economy" you simply don't care and you will be happy about finally being able to buy some decent gear.

Mandalay Wrote:We're displeasured because the things are cheap in the first place because hackers undercut our prices, by a lot. They can keep hoarding the equips on many alternates and thus can afford to undercut for fast meso. We can't.

Again, the same personal problem I've been hearing and completely understanding, I'm looking for large economic ramifications.

Mandalay Wrote:It affects the economy because this puts mesos into the hacker's hands, and most of the time, they sell mesos for IRL money so no, it is not circulating among players in a healthy way. It is circulating to those willing to pay cash and the remaining mesos in potential reserve stock for future customers.

Thank you, this is what I was looking for, but what difference is there in placing mesos in hackers hands to be placed in the hands of people willing to spend dollars from placing mesos in the hands of bossers willing to spend dollars on NX to make the mesos? Bossers spend NX to be able to make mesos, I bet many people that aspire to be bossers or bossers themselves buy mesos. The two categories aren't so different in my eyes, both spend dollars to make mesos, circulating the mesos among those paying cash, whether directly via meso buying or indirectly via bossing and gear selling. What Nexon is doing and what the hackers are doing is not so different.

Also, I suspect over 80% of the mesos from bossing don't circulate "among players in a healthy way". I wholly support events like the Tempest Shop that encourage the mesoless and NXless player to rise into a different class, that's where I made my start. But most of the time, the characters with the mesos buy from characters with good equips and by extension, mesos. Healthy circulation back into lower classes probably only occurs that 20% of the time if not less solely on events like this.

Mandalay Wrote:The basic premise is that by doing this, sure, deflated prices are nice but what good are deflated prices if 1. they're so deflated, people would rather flock to hackers just because they know it's cheaper and 2. no one can sell pomegranate in the first place because of said hackers, which translates to no one has mesos to spend.

Again, this seems personal, the rate of sale indicates that there are mesos to spend, and people can spend because the equipment is cheap enough to buy. The only people that can't sell are people invested in the equips and by extension, the only people that you say have no mesos to spend are the same people, which definitely isn't true.

Mandalay Wrote:Edit: Not just the bossers. It affects merchers. If a merchant wants to monopolize on a certain commodity (ex: confusion fragments), they'll probably hit a point where they just can't keep up with the rate the botters can introduce them into the economy.

I have no idea what the economy is like in your server, but I do dabble in Confusion Fragments as well as Dream Fragments and I do well off of them. Confusion Fragments take a bit longer to sell, but on average I'd say a stack of 20 can sell in 2-3 weeks with a 20M profit per CF. Dream Fragments are easier, taking not more than 2 days to sell any amount (100~500) for 1M or so over buying for a cool 100M per stack.

I'm only looking for an economic effect regarding these equips, obviously it's morally wrong. I'm not sure where you were going with the counterfeit boot analogy, equips are very much real legit or not, no one's reputation is taking a hit or anything else you described.

The second paragraph is nothing new in MapleStory, you should expect your items to lose value as new items are introduced. You shouldn't be subject to that loss due to hackers though. But again, not a statement on the economics as much as an indictment on hackers. Not even touching the dupers stuff, not interested on derailing or rehashing something unrelated and really axe-grindy, didn't think so in the other thread but I can see the pattern now.

And that final statement was probably the complete opposite of what I was searching for, I'm looking for whole economic impact, not personal devaluation. I know about that, I lost money in CFs when they dropped through the floor.

Probably abundance and rate. Lots more hackers holding lots more mesos compared to the average bossing population.

I would imagine that since hackers have to deal with background checks, Moneypak / Paypal tidbits, communication, and competition it would be slower for the hackers to release their mesos into the economy (maybe all that hassle has partly something to do with how cheap the meso:USD ratio is?)

I was trying to allude to something along the lines of "not everyone is that willing to shell out money for mesos so the actual rate might be slow" but now that I thought about it some more, how quickly people really do buy mesos with real money is a mystery (some days I see "sold out" on meso selling threads, and some days they have like, 10b or something still in stock). Lovely paradoxical situation.

I'd believe this. Not very surprised with the "trickling down" effect, especially when NX sellers are hard to come by. It's analogous to how the real world economy probably operates as well.

Fair enough. I don't doubt that there are mesos to spend, but I will at least argue that because of said hackers and Nexon acting on illicit items it seems to have forced a lot to budget their mesos more carefully now than before. If you want to go as far as calling it a virtual recession even.

For me personally, even if I had no decent equips before duped equips became prominent, I wouldn't (and haven't really) bother with hacked items anyway. I wasn't only implying about how hackers screwed me over but a lot of my good friends as well and the anti-cheating community (or lack thereof it now) as a whole. You're making it seem like my anger towards hackers is rooted in selfishness when it's the exact opposite.

Why does it matter to you what economic impact it has? The plain fact is that hackers have monopolized the free market. I'm not an economics buff, and I'm sure there's a few pros to it (like cheap gear for everyone), but that can't possibly be good for the game ultimately, can it? I like real life analogies so I'll make another one here:

1m (price in mesos) gear which only an upper-tier boss drops at a very rare rate is like giving mansions to thousands of able-bodied and young unemployed poor people in real life with no taxes, with no need to pay mortgage. Who would this be economically good for other than those unemployed people? Let's not forget that the employed upper class people who previously own a mansion still have to keep paying their property taxes and still have to pay their mortgages, and now since there's more responsibility for city, state, and federal governments to offer services to these newly-acquired mansions those upper-class employed citizens would have to pay much higher taxes and much higher mortgages, cost of living becomes much higher and incomes would not increase. Those upper-class citizens are now more like middle class, and probably would eventually be forced to move out of their spiffy mansions. Does this seem like economical stability to you guys? Because it does not to me.

edit: And I don't have an axe to grind with anyone when I pretty much already know how legit/illegit quite a few people on SP are. Honestly, I explained my intentions on the thread that SaptaZapta made. It was a friendly discussion save for a few people being offended when they didn't have to post or vote in the first place, even though the poll turning out public was a mistake. I am friends with quite a few ex-hackers in-game and tons of people who use hacked gear and/or glitch. Just because I don't agree with someone doesn't mean I'm out to vilify them and we cannot come to a reasonable understanding.

No, if hackers have monopolized the market, then no one other than hacker would be able to sell their goods. This is not the case. Plenty of people are still selling their goods, albeit at depressed prices, but they are still selling and still making profit. And what would be the difference if a group of non-hackers monopolized the market, because in the past Ma Bells guilds and groupings did crop up. In fact, before hackers, the NX spending elite technically would have "monopolized" the market by your definition.

And you answered your first question with your last question. Why does it matter to me, because I seek understanding regarding the widely expressed notion that hackers do all those no-good, very bad things and it causes all sorts of wreckage in the Maple economy and whether or not and to what varying degrees is it "good (or bad) for the game"? Because from my observations, besides depressed equip prices (which in itself is not necessarily a bad thing), everything else seems stable. Am I talking about wreckage to personal fortunes? No. Am I talking about wait times at bosses? No. I seek a broad answer to an economic question, not a moral one.

Which aspect of Maple mirrors these 'property taxes and mortgages'? There is no ongoing cost to owning an equipment--you either have it or you don't.
Responsibility to offer services to these newly-acquired mansions? Higher taxes? What on earth are you talking about? How is this an analogy to Maple in any way?

All your posts sound as if you're just butthurt because you had some good gear that got devalued due to hackers. However, have you even considered what Nexon is doing to your equips? Miracle Cube sales, free protection scrolls, additional options, new equipment/set bonuses, and hot time abusers are just some of the factors that devalue your items naturally.

As the other poster(s) have already suggested, how hackers affect you is largely dependent on your standing in the Maple social hierarchy. Hackers are speeding up the rate at which the overall standards are increasing, but the gap between the rich and poor is only getting larger. At this point here, we're dealing with, quite simply, market supply of what was previously hard to obtain, such as Empress equips.

I'm sure many people who invested in a decently scrolled Reverse equip, considered 'end-game' a couple of years ago, wouldn't have imagined that we'd be seeing legitimate items with 200+ attack, or the whole concept of boss damage%.

In the end, you're the one who dictates how much hackers affect you. As a casual player, I am quite thankful at how powerful I've become for only a fraction of the price compared to years ago. You're trying to use your own experiences to speak for the entire Maple population and economy, but clearly that's not going to work--especially considering the ones being negatively impacted are a small minority.

When most items sold are hacked/duped/obtained through hacks, that's damn near close to a full-on monopoly. Let's not kid ourselves.
Chilly Wrote:And what would be the difference if a group of non-hackers monopolized the market, because in the past Ma Bells guilds and groupings did crop up. In fact, before hackers, the NX spending elite technically would have "monopolized" the market by your definition.
No difference, just that hackers did it by cheating. But then again, I've never heard of that guild before. I'm quite sure a single guild or even a grouping of 10 can't deflate or inflate certain items as long as none of their members hack or rely on hackers. Even if they could, that would be due to certain items being rare versus certain items being overabundant (hacked/duped/botted).

Extremely high abundance of items which are normally high in demand devalues mesos. NX:Meso ratio only grows higher, thus harder and harder to buy NX for mesos and vice-versa. So those players which possess little mesos won't be able to afford NX. What'll they do instead of buying NX? Buy cheap hacker-created items? Cycle continues, Nexon makes less and less money. Hackers and opportunistic hacker-lovers make more and more mesos..... I guess that stimulates the economy but sure-as-heck not in a beneficial way.

I'm talking about it more in the sociology-economical sense than anything else. I guess it was a poor anology though in hindsight.

Yes Nexon is partially responsible, but not more than an overabundance of items which should normally be extremely rare.

Agreed about gap between rich and poor, but it's important to note exactly who is getting rich and who is getting poor. My third response in this post should explain this.

Please refer to my third replay here again. Anyone who buys NX with mesos and vice-versa is affected negatively. And that ain't a minority lol.
